The US invades sovereign nations whenever they have something we want, and we think we can get away with it.

I'm curious, the invasion is about a week old, and it is still front page news and the top news story of the day. However, it looks like the invasion is going to be a longer more protracted war than initially thought.
How long until the invasion is no longer front page news, and starts being covered by mainstream news after the first commercial break? I'm guessing two more weeks as people will get bored of the story rather soon. Sure, if something major happens, it will rise up to the top story, but day to day updates will not be given the same coverage.

This all depends on whether or not Putin makes dramatic new choices in where to send his military. If they just get bogged down where they are now, yes, people will get bored.golden sloth said:

The compelling "Where is Hunter's Laptop?" scandal has already pushed the Ukraine Invasion story pretty far down the Fox News website opening page.

On #C4News tonight we’re reporting on the treatment of students from African countries fleeing Ukraine. We’ve seen disturbing footage of black people arriving in from #Ukriane being chased through the streets of Przemysl (border town in Poland) by far-right ‘patrols’. pic.twitter.com/XsCRNGxpFF

Not surprising. This is happening all over Europe, partly as a reaction to increased immigration and Neoliberal austerity measures, which depress wages & salaries for a majority of working people; and partly as a heavily-promoted right-wing/populist/authoritarian social media campaign.going4roses said:

Wow
My grandparents faced racist persecution in that very town in Poland a century ago so I wouldn't be so quick to assume that neoliberal (lol) austerity measures are to blame. Do you think neoliberals were throwing tomatoes at my 8 year old grandmother 100 years ago while she was walking to school?cbbass1 said:Not surprising. Wow
There's a very informative series of documentary videos on Europe's right-wing movement. Poland is downright nasty AF.

As in the U.S., it's a variety of reasons. Hard to differentiate the impact of economic austerity policies from the social (women's rights, LGBTQ rights, etc.). The Catholic Church has always been a powerful influence in Poland. Like the U.S., the economic policies generate the anger & discontent, while the "culture wars" inflame the emotions, amplified over social media.going4roses said:

No. Racism is as old as the human race.Unit2Sucks said:

IMO, this is the natural result of 40+ years of Milton Friedman / Chicago School economics, where the free flow of Labor and Capital across international boundaries is the ideal, as it results in lower wages overall.
[As I've mentioned before, I think Friedman is wrong. In the U.S., Reagan stopped enforcing the laws against employers' hiring of undocumented immigrants. This lowered low-end wages in the U.S., and helped to transform the U.S. and Europe from high wage/salary economies to low wage/salary economies (Neoliberal/austerity).]
How do you think racists should be appeased? And similarly, do you blame women for provoking their abusive spouses? Or do you just blame neoliberals?cbbass1 said:No. Racism is as old as the human race.Unit2Sucks said:

Neoliberal policies inflamed the racism that existed for centuries.

Neoliberalism brought a combination of austerity and immigration, inflaming prejudices that were centuries old, in many cases.
