Not if country A and country B are at war, and their border is surveilled with armies that shoot everything that moves. They would instead have gone to any number of country Cs, countries that are not at war with Russia, and were people travel relatively freely, like Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan etc.
The perps had plans to be picked up and evacuated at a designated point on the Ukrainian border. Going through that border without any kind of plan or guarantee would have been extremely risky.
In any case, we will probably have confirmation of this and other facts soon enough. There is a number of elements that indicate that was a fairly well organized operation with mercs that required local logistical support.

Biggest takeaway from today is that Putin can't protect his people. If he thinks Ukraine is responsible, he should probably initiate a full withdrawal ASAP. Ukraine won't stop killing Russians and all "realists" understand that there is no point in assigning blame or responsibility.
