The Republican party did not bank on non-Republicans voting against them in a midterm election and so felt they could get away with running Trump candidates because it would bring out the base. When the polls showed otherwise after the supreme court decision, very conservative pollsters flooded the polls with bogus polls to try to convince the non-Republican voters to stay home as a red wave was inevitable. But the lying did the opposite, making Republicans complacent and sending many young people to the ballot box who were alarmed by the polls.concordtom said:wraptor347 said:
You could call it luck, but I think it's more incompetence on the GOP's part in nominating and promoting such bad candidates.
Maybe there's a sizable portion of Republicans (the extreme, stupid, MAGA kind) who don't even bother to vote unless they are emotionally riled up.
Maybe party officials realized this and figured, "look, we've got the lifelong "Republican" branded individuals in the bag, simply out of their own name-brand partisanship. What we need to do is either attract centrists or these fringe whackos who typically sit it out."
So, the GOP pivoted towards the whackos, and what better whacko to lead them than Donald J Trump?!!
You and I are in agreement here. The democrats were successful in helping whack jobs make it through GOP primaries only to lose to democrats in the election. That was quite machiavellian and distasteful, but no different from what we've seen for year in politics (see support for Kanye and other third party spoilers by the GOP).tequila4kapp said:

This internal battle of Trumpers vs America Firsters vs the Establishment wings has to play out. That is going to carry through the 2024 election cycle, meaning Rs will lose then too.
This isn't going to be pretty for Rs. The first two groups would rather leave the R party than go back to letting believe in nothing Establishment Rs win. American First people basically believe in Trump's agenda but nobody can beat Trump on his own agenda. So basically this doesn't resolve until Trump dies, is imprisoned or becomes too old to run. Smart Ds should drop their assorted criminal investigations against him and let him kill the R party from within for the next 2-10 years.
If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed.......and we will deserve it.

McConnell absolutely prioritized beating Trumpers over beating Ds. He spent an extra 9m in Alaska to guarantee "his" R beat another R. Full stop. 9 MILLION for one R to beat another R in the general election. That is insane. And he's so consolidated his power in the Senate that it's not going to cost him a thing.bearister said:Former Trump senior adviser Stephen Miller blames Mitch McConnell, lack of funds for failed "red wave" https://t.co/2RjZvFHOP5

Based on special elections and generic ballot and president approval trends, I’d say we are probably at about a 50-49 Dem senate with GA headed to runoff and 219-216 GOP house. Things could change tho

Will be interesting to compare turnout in the GA face off this time vs last time.
I can't imagine a whole lot of people going out of their way to vote for Walker.

I'm not sure about that characterization of the district, at all. The district is across the Columbia river from Portland. It was a D district forever before the R who lost in the primary won. Once she won she held it for 10 years. I won't be surprised if a moderate D holds it for a long while again.dimitrig said:concordtom said:okaydo said:I don’t know how ppl watch pro sports, major corporations spreading woke propaganda while convincing men that the masculine thing to do is watch other men compete in a silly game.

The GOP / MAGA Civil War is a distraction.
As long as we have election season, instead if night election night, we will be a one party nation. Mass collecting, mailing, and curing ballots promises that.
And the geriatric Democrat leaders aren't peaches.
The only ones obsessed about it are the MAGA types and others spoon fed what to think by the right wing media. It would be interesting to see an accurate and non biased figure of just how often this is occurring among minors. I doubt it's very many.concordtom said:movielover said:

From Wiki - The new 3rd district (following 2020 census) was marginally more favorable for Republicans, voting for Trump in 2020 by a margin of 4.2%, as opposed to the old district's 3.7%.dimitrig said:tequila4kapp said:I'm not sure about that characterization of the district, at all. It shares very little in common with Portland. Even the candidate who won is a gun owner. The area is full of white redneck hunters, beer swilling blue collar mill workers, homophobes, and drug addicts. It has more in common with the red parts of Michigan than with Portland and for the same reason which is loss of union jobs. As Portlanders move across the river it may change but only in the areas right near Portland. The district continues at least another 60 miles north and those area are why this Kent bozo even made it to the primary.

OK, that's more than I would have thought. I wouldn't be against requiring someone to be over 18 before having gender change surgery. While i wouldn't begin to believe I understand what they are going through, once the surgery is done, there's no going back. There were several things I thought were great ideas at 14 or 15 that I had a 180 degree change of heart about by the time I was 18 or 19.tequila4kapp said:https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-transyouth-data/Eastern Oregon Bear said:The only ones obsessed about it are the MAGA types and others spoon fed what to think by the right wing media. From the article.
Number of kids diagnosed with gender dysphasia tripled from 2017 to 2021, up to @40k. Number on puberty blockers doubled to @1400. Hormone therapy double to @4200. Surgeries increased from 238 in 2019 to 2082 in 2021. Numbers are incomplete / partial because uninsured claims aren't included.
==========
A family member has worked in the OR for many years and has a specialty of working in this space. For maybe 2 decades their hospital was maybe the only one on the west coast that performed these operations. People flew in from all over the country to get them. (I could be misremembering this but I think a certain very famous employer with well known facilities in Orlando and Orange County, CA used to pay for these because they weren't covered by their insurance). I don't remember a single instance of a minor having the surgery, ever. Maybe they were but I just didn't hear about it. But my sense was it was always adults and it only happened after substantial counseling and what appeared to me to be a fairly prolonged protocol. Some patients were rejected for mental health type reasons.

1. Woke = wise, aware, informed. So, every time idiots use it derisively as an insult, I interpret the term user as a dope. Just so you know, I'm not alone. Being woke is a compliment.
2. You also never heard about gays in the 60's, but they existed.
Your fear of how others live their lives reflects upon you. Like, what the hell do you care ? You wouldn't care if these strangers rotted in jail for stealing bread, so maybe you could just settle down rather than sit in judgment. Live and let live.
