Thank God there is zero chance Trump will lead us down the path to a Totalitarian State:

"France's research minister said a French scientist was denied entry to the US this month after immigration officers at an airport searched his phone and found messages in which he had expressed criticism of the Trump administration.

…. . "This measure was apparently taken by the American authorities because the researcher's phone contained exchanges with colleagues and friends in which he expressed a personal opinion on the Trump administration's research policy," the minister added.

… Another AFP source said that US authorities accused the French researcher of "hateful and conspiratorial messages". He was reportedly also informed of an FBI investigation, but told that "charges were dropped" before being expelled.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The research minister, Baptiste, has been outspoken in his own criticism of the Trump administration, and Elon Musk, for making huge cuts to scientific research budgets."

Remember when your favorite term was "Whataboutism?"

"The Trump administration has launched a massive, all-of-government, AI-assisted program called "Catch and Revoke," which will scan every social media comment and anything online they can use to flush out any noncitizen who might be seen as anti-Semitic or anti-Zionist or anti-Israel or indeed just getting on Marco Rubio's wrong side.

……. You could, for example, be a Ukrainian exile who furiously opposes the Trump administration's new policy toward Russia. Under the Rubio standard, if you do not have citizenship, merely expressing your views in a way that jeopardizes US foreign policy interests is now a deportable offense. The Trump administration, unless a court stops them, has effectively removed the First Amendment from tens of millions of inhabitants of this country.

…… As for all those brave center-right defenders of free speech on campus these last few years? Just see if they are condemning this. And if they aren't, never take them seriously on this subject again."

This is key:

It's important to note that this is not about protection from woke professors or ideologically captured deans. It's protection from direct surveillance by the federal government.
I acknowledge that segments of the left got a little too comfortable with lighter ways of censoring or chilling speech on topics they didn't like during the Trump/Biden years. But there's a difference between "You might not get that job" or "You might lose your Twitter account" and "The government might arrest and jail you without due process." I think the latter is more worthy of vehement opposition.

The account suspensions are likely legal, as Turkish law allows such actions should the government request them. A 2022 social media law gives the government vast and vague power to suppress content.
It's not the first time that X has restricted access to content in the country. In 2023, when Erdoan was up for reelection, X restricted content "to ensure Twitter remains available to the people of Turkey," according to its global government affairs account.
Musk himself said that "the choice is have Twitter throttled in its entirety or limit access to some tweets." He said X would publicly post the Turkish government's requests.
In parallel, access to social media like X, TikTok, Instagram and YouTube has been restricted in Turkey, according to internet watchdog Netblocks.

Since you're pretending to care about this stuff after mysteriously not caring at all before January 20, 2025, here's a little video for you from the lawyer of one of the detainees.
I don't remember law-abiding Palestinian activists being taken off the street, jailed, and sent to far-off holding facilities while being threatened with deportation before, but okay.

Question for you: have you ever considered inviting people into your tent when they start to agree with you, rather than always talking s*** because they didn't agree with you before? I feel like that would be the better way to build a popular political movement, rather than whatever it is you think you're doing.

"One by one, he is bending ostensibly independent actors under the weight of his power. So far, Trump has targeted the legal community, universities, the arts, career government employees and the press and brought them to heel in some measure, willingly or not. Law firms with even indirect ties to past investigations of Trump now face punitive measures that could put them out of business."

"Every tyrant in history has sought to stifle criticism of himself and his regime.

But America was founded on criticism. American democracy was built on dissent. We conducted a revolution against tyranny.

This moment calls for courage and collective action rather than capitulation resolve by universities, researchers, journalists, the legal community, and the arts to stand up to Trump.

Anyone holding responsible positions in these five pillars of civil society must reject Trump's attempts at intimidation and condemn what he is trying to do.

Those who surrender to Trump's tyranny invite more of it."
