Senator Mitch McConnell had the authority to schedule a Senate trial before President Trump left office, which could have led to a conviction and disqualification from holding future office.

He argued that convicting a former president was unconstitutional because impeachment is meant for sitting civil officers. However, McConnell also stated on the Senate floor that Trump was "practically and morally responsible" for provoking the January 6th Capitol attack.

I can relate to the situation. A high profile relative had a bad accident and needed extended rehab time. There was an extended period of hush hush which I thought was a bit extreme. Yet, it was pulled off and that was ten years ago. The person is still doing just fine!
I think the same is being attempted, but it won't be successful in the end because Mitch is too far gone and will simply die soon enough anyway. But they are only looking to get to Jan 3rd, so…. Yeah, he could limp across that finish line.
