…. I'm embarrassed and scared for our country and I no longer feel I can do much more than laugh. Way to go.

When a former POTUS running for an additional term has the audacity and the crassness to monetize and politicize something as embarrassing and humiliating as a felony conviction, and something as somber and tragic as an assassination attempt where an innocent man was murdered, and millions of his supporters not only have no problem with it but wholeheartedly and vigorously embrace it, America has hit its nadir and there is no coming back.

Hitting the nadir is exactly when things turn around...unless we are starting the extinction process. I'm not so sure we've hit the nadir but when we do things will start the slow grind back to some sort of normalcy and decency. I'm not ready to give up hope.

That is a bad look.
It is also an interesting insight into the deep state that this gets leaked to the WaPo. The Left is at it again ...

Yes, because carting around suitcases of dirty laundry is so much cheaper than just getting it laundered.

What I would be wondering is... what else is in those suitcases that he is smuggling?

I think it's bs on the part of the Dems (or anyone) to boycott the speech of an influential world leader. What happened to hearing somebody out, then discussing it further, afterwards? Not a good look. Instead, try showing that you value civilized free speech.

The truth about Netanyahu is that his popularity is way underwater at home and the only reason he is doing this speech in front of Congress is that he wants to use them as a political prop to shore up support in Israel. Democratic leadership should never have agreed to this, so I don't mind individual members choosing not to attend.

It's not like they won't know what was in the speech; they just don't want to give Bibi the political capital he wants.

Fair enough. That is an angle I had not considered. And yet (just wondering), maybe we should listen to him because he holds the position of Prime Minister of Israel, without thinking about all the political angles? I will admit to being undecided about this issue at the moment.

Perhaps, though to take it to an extreme example (for the sake of argument): if the Republican leadership got a wild hair and decided to invite Vladimir Putin to speak in front of Congress, should Democrats go along with that?

IMHO no foreign leader should ever be speaking inside congress. They need to stop doing this. I am with Thomas Massie on this one, this was Netanyahu using this platform to shore up support. I wish more Republicans didn't attend. These foreign lobbying orgs like AIPAC need to be completely dismantled. Btw this goes for all foreign leaders, Zelensky included.

I am just thinking this through, not trying to argue "my side"...

Does a foreign leader speaking to Congress necessarily have undue influence on them? Are they sheep that can't think for themselves? To use the example of Putin, I'm not a big fan of the guy (understatement), but if I'm in Congress and he addresses us, so what? Maybe I think about the issue more, discuss it with colleagues and my negative opinion solidifies.

OTOH, what good would it do, so why do it?

The difference is that Netanyahu is a war criminal who is literally leading a genocide as he is addressing Congress, and what's even worse beyond that is that almost all the congressmen present are completely subservient to him and to the Israeli lobbies, clapping like trained seals to his every word.

Netanyahu boasted on several occasions that America and Congress were in his pocket. He's been waiting for the moment to hit the Palestinians very, very hard his whole career, as foretold in this video from the 1990s.

The main reason for Netanyahu's visit is to get US taxpayer funds and direct military participation into the upcoming Israeli war on Lebanon. He wants US boots on the ground in that campaign, in addition to USAF and Navy bombing of Lebanon, leading to an escalation with its ally, Iran. That's why he lied about Iran being behind the attempt on Trump's lie last week. It did work against Saddam's Iraq and tall tales of his being a part of 9/11 back in the day, so why not try again this time.

I will concede that Congress just listening to Netanyahu... they might as well be watching a commercial or something.

However, my solution to the challenges that you correctly note is to have everybody learn more about both sides. Part of the problem nowadays is that most people only listen to the information they want to hear. Maybe the folks in Congress who boycotted Netanyahu were the ones that most needed to listen (and hopefully have a Q & A),,, and the ones that gave him knee-jerk applause are the ones who ought to go on a little junket to Gaza.

The San Francisco Standard:

"District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in March quietly promoted a nursing professor with no legal license who is a longtime friend to run the office as chief of staff, with an annual salary of nearly $300,000.

"Monifa Willis, who still earns more than $100,000 a year for her part-time work at UCSF, was initially hired in 2022 to run the District Attorney's Office's Victim Services Division. She was also the CEO of a marijuana dispensary called New Life CA, which is now closed...."

I had hope for Jenkins... what a sh-tty move.

Are you in favor of the Trump sanctions but against the Biden sanctions which are mostly a result of Russia attacking Ukraine?

There are a lot of a-holes out there running countries. I'm fine with sanctions. In fact, whenever possible I think America should prioritize trade with other free and open countries.

This Arnaud guy, who obviously hates America, says sanctions are devastating, ineffective, and backfiring on America. Seems like a guy who will say anything.

I'd say the sanctions on Russia are justified, but it is fair to say that they're overused as a tool. I tend to agree that we haven't gotten much out of our policy towards, say, Cuba and Venezuela.

Instead of resorting to your usual midbrow neoliberal jingoism, try to refute the article's main points:

Quote:

1. ~1/3 of all nations on Earth now are sanctioned by the US. This disproportionately affects poor countries with over *60%* of *all poor countries* (countries classified as low-income countries by the World Bank) under US sanctions of some kind.

2. Sanctions have become an immensely corrupt multi-billion-dollar lobbying & influence industry, enriching former US officials who are hired by foreign countries & oligarchs.

3. Biden is the president who - by an order of magnitude - had the highest rate of sanctions with at some point in his administration a volley of +6K sanctions in just 2 years.

4. Sanctions have had devastating effects on innocent civilians, directly causing immense suffering and possibly deaths in the hundreds of thousands. In Cuba, they've made critical medical supplies impossible to import. In Venezuela, they contributed to a financial collapse 3X greater than the US Great Depression. Syria faces its greatest humanitarian crisis this year after a decade of sanctions.

5. Worse of all, besides causing immense suffering of civilians in mostly poor countries and enriching a corrupt system, there is very little evidence that sanctions actually work at all. This is an incredible quote in the article by Bill Reinsch, a former US Commerce Department official: "nobody in government is sure this whole strategy [of sanctions] is even working."

In the case of sanctions against Russia, they are putting into motion a global dedolarization process and boomeranging back against the economies of Europe.
