Most Americans will LOVE:

- no new wars?
- proxy war w Ukraine ended
- lower energy prices
- lower food prices (see above)
- lower inflation (see above)
- secure border with 90% less illegal immigration

This whole border thing is a manufactured crisis and it bores me.

There is a legitimate problem at the border . . . too many people showing up and overwhelming the system.

That said, it is "manufactured" in the sense that the people who could really do something to fix the problem have just decided to use it to play politics.

There's been a problem at the border for decades now.

Why is it suddenly a crisis? It's an election year that's why.

You underplay the magnitude and change in this travesty engineered by Biden / Obama and Congress.*

TechnoFog: The Border Bill and Biden's Triangulation

"The scale of the border crisis under the Biden Administration is almost unimaginable.

"President Biden's open invitation to illegal immigration fell on receptive ears in Mexico and Central America and elsewhere. Since Biden's inauguration, there have been over 6.2 million illegal alien encounters at the border, with approximately 3 million illegal aliens released into the country. For context, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) encountered 1,662,476 adults at the southwestern border in 2022, as opposed to only 368,304 in 2019...."

And how many millions travel into our country that we don't process or see? Drug smugglers and human traffickers don't want to be processed.

* Don't forget, Trump's Congress refused to help him secure the border (wh-res), so President Trump negotiated with Mexico's president to stop illegal immigration.

It's the GOP's favorite crisis because it combines racism, xenophobia and economic security into one fear-filled trifecta for their fragile white base. They especially love when they can freak out about caravans.

When they control the white house and both branches of congress (which happened under Dubya and Trump) they had no interest in solving the "crisis" and spend all of their energy on lowering taxes. Lowering taxes pays their bills (eg keeps the donors happy) while ranting on the border keeps their low-information base engaged.

Trump paid lip service to infrastructure week and healthcare (neither of which the GOP ever even came close to having a plan for) but didn't do anything on the border except for a few executive orders. If they cared about "fixing" the border, why didn't they do anything under Trump? The answer is simple: for the same reason they are blocking the border deal under Biden, they have no interest in giving up this crisis.

Just like they pretend the economically magically improves when the GOP is in the white house, they pretend the border crisis is solved and the "both sides" media is happy to cover whatever the GOP's praetorian guard media decides to prioritize.

The elites don't want a secure border.

American citizens do. There's the rub.

Ergo, President Trump cut a deal with Amlo to get Mexico to close the border.

Even Fox News is calling out the GOP.

This is wild speculation and definitely not true, but it makes more sense than 90% of MAGA conspiracy nonsense. It's also certainly true that the GOP is blocking this immigration bill at Trump's behest.

And just a reminder, Trump endorsed Senator Lankford a few years ago and claimed he was "Strong" on the border, which is about as ringing an endorsement as Trump can give, such is his limited vocabulary.

Please define the word religion. And then connect that definition to the science of Global Warming.

Oh, and for extra credit, answer how calling something is a religion is an insult when you are presumably religious? As in: "Let me guess...liberal authors and those that critique the religion of Christianity." Using the word "religion" sarcastically and as an epithet to call into question that reasoning ability of a person who believes in Christianity.

This probably went over your head, but give it a shot at answering.

Thanks for helping movielover out. Super kind of you, but I think I asked HIM to define religion since he was the one to use it as an epithet.

Typically the word religion applies to a set of beliefs as it relates to a god, but yes it has come to other colloquial usages. The way he used it was to denigrate the word religion when applied to Global Warming. I think one could hazard to guess that he would celebrate a religious belief in a god or cause he agrees with but that then "religious" connotes irrational on a god or cause he disagrees with. So does he believe that faith without empirical evidence is good or bad? Does he think that systems of belief held with ardor are good or bad? Or does he not really know what he thinks or means but that sounded like a cool insult that would work on FOX or a Twitter meme? I am betting the later.

I'm sure you know this, this is one side of the economic equation: income/revenue. Now what about the expense side? How is our economy 7 trillion dollars better and yet our national debt 32 trillion? Costs matter, not just revenue.

Our national debt has ballooned because conservatives don't believe in taxes. I'm not being glib here - the GOP's main cause of action is reducing taxes, especially for the wealthy who drive the party financially. There is a reason that Trump's only signature legislation (COVID aside) was to greatly reduce the taxes of wealthy Americans (in red states) and that when the GOP held the house, the senate and the white house they made zero attempt to reduce the deficit.

Immigrants pay a higher percentage of their wages in taxes than billionaire GOP donors. You can thank Donald Trump for that.

This article says that immigrant households pay a slightly disproportionate share of income tax (15.4% of taxes are paid by 14.8% of the population).

Here's an article with some data on state and local taxes.

Our national debt is $32 trillion and growing for a lot of reasons but certainly not disproportionately due to immigrants.

The special counsel "Hur said his investigation "uncovered evidence that President Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen." (emphasis added)

The materials included "marked classified documents about military and foreign policy in Afghanistan, and notebooks containing Mr. Biden's handwritten entries about issues of national security and foreign policy implicating sensitive intelligence sources and methods." "

But declines to bring charges due to the always popular "he's a nice, feeble old man defense":

" The special counsel also described Biden as "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."
"We have also considered that, at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory," Hur wrote in the report. "Based on our direct interactions with and observations of him, he is someone from whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt. It would be difficult to convince a jury that they should convict himby then a former president well into his eightiesof a serious felony that requires a mental state of willfulness." Just like the GOP's claims about the Mueller report, this is a full exoneration of Biden.

I'm being glib and I haven't read the thing yet obviously but I'm curious why there is no mention of the fact that Biden can't be prosecuted at this time because he is the sitting president. Does the special counsel think that something like this could even be charged during Biden's term?

The below the belt remarks about Biden being a good person notwithstanding, I'm genuinely surprised that Biden was referring to classified docs after he left the white house and find it quite troubling. I would consider it to be disqualifying if he were up against a person who didn't have 10x the disqualifications. I think the right thing for Biden to do is to step down the day before his second term starts to let Kamala Harris assume the Presidency.
