AI Overview: "In 2024, Portland Public Schools (PPS) reported that 55.4% of students were proficient in English language arts, a slight increase from 43% the previous year, though this figure is described as dismal by Willamette Week."

Portland is about 6% Black, with most of those folks in the north / NE "Soul District".

Apparently PPS has allocated funding, and there have been city bond monies for a Black Student Excellence building / complex still undeveloped.

This segment (below) is a disaster from beginning to end, and the websites and articles I skimmed talked about equity, and lots of other current-day mumbo jumbo. This apparently is a new nationwide movement "creating supportive, culturally affirming environments and addressing disparities in educational outcomes."

But what I skimmed shows no plan to increase reading, writing, or mathematics abilities or test scores.



What's needed is not more marketing slogans, but students achieving basic core competency skills.

There was a Black principal decades ago, she was wonderful, in the northeast, who was tired of all the new educational fads. She studied the educational playbook of a prestigious local school and copied it. Uniforms, structure, the Principal greeting every student by name at the beginning of the day, etc. Students studied the classics and work was rigorous. She had huge success, and had a large waiting list. Kind of an earlier version of Jaime Escalante (East Los Angeles calculus teacher).

Portland appears to have invested millions more in an unproven, undefined, and unserious cultural and political DEI program.

It seems like climate change has taken a backseat since covid and with the tense geopolitical climate and return to a cold war with China and Russia today.

Part of the reason is that China has cornered the global renewable energy market, so they would benefit economically from the scaling down of fossil fuel use in the West.
