Shocky, this absolutely supports something I was already thinking about the upcoming ASU game: that Cal needs to aggressively generate pressure on the ASU QB by sending additional rushers on many/most plays.

My fear is that Sirmon won't do this, or won't do it until ASU has scored 2 or 3 times.

Let's get aggressive on defense....if it works it's a huge confidence boost. If it's a mixed bag and we give up some big plays, we can still beat the Sun Devils. I want opposing QBs to have some fear when they play us....

cnhth, ur kinda naive, everyone here loves marshawn but the reality is that he didn't earn a college degree & the avis preferred guy at the oakland airport (his rentals are automatically charged the 500 bucks non smoking penalty) tells me that beastmode burns hard every single day of the year

a non stoned easter bunny would be a better hc than marshawn

I would be curious as to the Wilcox-Spav decision-making dynamics, whether it be play-calling, personnel or anything about the offense. Many questionable decisions in the Auburn and UW games.

Basically, Wilcox should be delegating everything on that side of the ball.. (If he wants to do some more hands-on coaching, maybe he can fix special teams.) Plus, if Wilcox is meddling in the offense, that surely can't sit well with Spav.

Shocky and Cal, not disagreeing with either of you. I'm just offering the only other plausible rationale for taking the foot off the gas... and that I think, was the route the coaches took. As you say, football is violent...no sense in making a horrible game even worse by risking an injury for what? Some points against a 3rd string defense? I understand and appreciate the aggressive mentality you both display (we need more of that) but the risk/reward wasn't there at that stage of the game imo...

not gonna lie, it really bothered me that with the clock winding down in the 4th quarter with multiple timeouts & the jet pounding the ball downfield that the clock wuz allowed to run out without any attempt to score

that's just garbage & disrespectful to the back up players in the game, that's not the yoga mindset of maximizing ur potential (whatever that may be)

every snap matters or no snap matters#
THAT'S what really bothered you about this game??? Really?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
calalmnus, the jet is not 175 lbs in real life, he's 165 lbs like shocky but agreed that running him into the pile isn't the best usage...if jt & coach gould wuz still our coaches our running backs would be getting pitch outs in space to make magic

oskidumber, michael luckhurst is a generational talent, benching him would be kinda like sitting jaylen brown back in the day when **** didn't go right early on

sobchak, 100% football is a game usually won by alpha males, taunting is part of the package & that's why the monster is a huge fan of arrow shooter taj davis

zony, we're on the same page re: coach sirmon's gameplan for asu, peter needs to dial up early pressure on the worst offensive line in the pac 12 whose offensive line coach is no longer with the program & a fairly immobile qb in pyne...peter needs to release the ******* dogs of war with blitz packages on the 1st series this saturday at memorial stadium

big c, here's the thing about justin, he's a friendly person but at the same time he don't allow people to get real close to him, his inner circle is very tight...for instance if one of our players got relationship problems it's very unlike they would go to wilcox for advice, he's viewed by some players as a little bit aloof...he's got an open door but he's very private & conservative which is why he gets annoyed when the monster drops obtuse hints re: the woman he's been living with the last 7 years...the point is that spav is not driving the bus 100% his way knowing wilcox's aversion to interceptions over the middle 3rd of the field and the potential for muffed pitchouts to become live ball turnovers

goofy, the elite football programs take advantage of every gameday snap for player development...that's why bowl games are so critical for programs, another 15 practices to develop players...taking the air out of the ball is disrespectful to the back ups who put in a zillion hours of work to get on the field...if this ever happens again, the monster is gonna jump the ******* fence & scream at our head coach...bet

jimmy, ima happy person, but yeah the taking a knee while the jet wuz electrically repping oakland on the field really bothered me & so does coach wilcox's decision in year 7 to turn over special teams duties to coach so'oto (solid olb coach/recruiter) who is kinda clueless re: the nuances of special teams play & particularly the mental side of kicking...if knowlton wuz not handicapping the staff with salary limitations brought on by his overspending on olympic sports we could've replaced the drunk azz ragle with nfl rising special teams coach byron storer

mr silverleaf sun angel update: asu's heavily injured offensive line gave up 8 sacks against usc that also resulted in an interception & fumble by qb drew pyne (who got 4 interceptions against fresno state the previous week under pressure)

complicating matters is that devils offensive line coach saga tuitele is not with the program, it's being called publicly "health issues" but there's a backstory (also with beau being relieved of play calling duties by dilly) there that can't be shared right now

coach sirmon needs to dial up the morgan scalley casino blitzing packages & less shoney's bend but don't break at the waistline d this saturday at noon at memorial stadium...r u gonna b there to see how this plays out???
beleaguered asu athletic director/former sports agent ray anderson (who hired his good friend & client herm edwards thereby earning placement commission which is kinda a conflict of interest) is getting pressured to retire & is gonna be gone for good

ray: don't get emotional, herm, that ain't like you, you outta know i got a heavy heart but me and michael are gonna walk you to your car

legendary defensive coordinator & future nfl hall of famer marv lewis (currently the de facto defensive coordinator for asu) tole me during a conversation last winter at desert highlands (he lives off the tee to the right of the par 5 11th hole) with a smirk that cal was "the easiest team in the pac 12 to gameplan against" during the coach wilcox era because of his fear of passing into the middle third of the field...yeah even tho knowlton once tole me to my face that billy m wuz a "genius," nobody with any nfl pedigree shares that dumb azz opinion

marv stacks the box for stuffed running plays & cheats his linebackers & safeties to the perimeter for coverage assistance against the bears leaving only a spy who is tagging the qb for a potential run or slow developing drag routes over the middle

so the bears didn't attack the middle of the field during the 6'2" chase garbers & 6'5" jack plummer seasons, now we got a 5'10" (maybe) quarterback who is challenged to see over defensive linemen and opponents review passing scatter charts for tendencies & flat out know that our head coach is not gonna risk an interception over the middle of the field...this conservatism is also why the bears lead the nation in the most punt return/kickoff fair catches, our staff's goal is not fumble the ball instead of strategizing for an electric return that scores points/hypes up the team/fans ala desean

and thus the bears throw only sideline routes & the almost always failed tight end blocking screens on the perimeter, nobody is fooled by our predictable tendencies...justin via spav is afraid of quick slants over the middle or passes to the tight ends in space (safer to have them as an extra blocker) while attacking the relatively wide open middle third of the field

and unlike the jt & coach gould era of future nfl running backs showcasing electric runs, justin is afraid that pitchouts to superstar jaydn ott (who will once again receive unsolicited nil offers this offseason) might result in a mishandled live ball turnover...pitchouts allow elite athletes to do their magic in space

and why is this the case?

coach wilcox plays the game not to win but not to lose, he's very conservative (which is probably why he's not married, no he's not gay)

the net result is a lotta one touchdown losses (on the plus side the bears are usually never blown out) with an elite defense & a schematically dysfunctional offense that don't utilize the entire field to its advantage

the irony in all of this is that the thing that justin is tryna avoid (critical turnovers that lose games) is exactly why the bears lose so many close games

i dunno maybe our coach should consult with matt bouza or somebody and loosen up a little bit, right?

the gutsy 4th & 2 call in bear territory early in the auburn game which my boy ashton stredick tenaciously converted into a 1st down is a step in the right direction

the middle 3rd of the field is the bears passing game bermuda traingle (and opposing defensive coordinators know it)#

will coach wilcox adapt or die???#

Watching the Dillingham ASU pressers this week has been a strange journey. Compared to Wilcox, Kenny kinda seems like he enjoys 32oz redbull smoothies with adderall floaters. Shocky,
Monday night I was watching the Rams play the Bengals, whose QB Joe Burrow had a gimpy lower leg and clearly could not scramble without discomfort. The Rams' DC, Raheem Morris, is known (notorious is actually a better word) for having a bend-don't-break defensive philosophy. He will have his defenses sit back and avoid the big play while allowing plenty of shorter completions and rarely sending more than 4 rushers (yeah, one of the 4 is Aaron Donald) and they played 2 high safeties all night to guard against the big play (admittedly, Jer'marr Chase is a huge weapon to account for).

Anyway, the Rams have a below average offense in terms of productivity and their Rams' offense was struggling all night to put points on the board. So what did DC Raheem Morris do? Did he send some blitzers to make Burrow scramble a bit and make him uncomfortable? [Does any of this set-up sound familiar to Cal fans?]

No one here cares about the Rams but to answer the question, no, Raheem Morris rarely upped the heat on an injured Burrow. And the Rams lost 19-16. But the Rams didn't really give up any big plays on defense, so there's that. [Kudos to you, Raheem].

[The Rams also punted with under 6 minutes left, trailing by 10 points, so Cal is not the only fanbase to suffer through an overly conservative strategy.]

All this is my way of saying, I really hope Sirmon unleashes the dogs of war on ASU and their newbie QB. If we get burned too much we can dial it back, but let's not let ASU's offense get comfortable and gain confidence.

The point of my Rams anecdote is that coaches sometimes make strange decisions and I think they like to stay in their own comfort zones. So I'm worried that Sirmon/Wilcox won't dial up the aggressiveness.
