Cal can clinch bowl eligibility with a win. But it does not guarantee a bowl invite. They are likley to find a bowl with 6 wins. But 7 is the more likely number of wins to guarantee a bowl. Cal is not eligible for the ACC bowl slots. They are still involved with the former P12 bowl tie ins. That means 6 games.

Oregon is likely involved with the CFP barring a complete collapse. ASU, Colorado and WSU are eligible now. UW and Cal sit at 5 wins. UCLA, USC and Utah all are at 4 and can get eligible with 2 wins. OSU can as well but Cal boatraced the Beavers and they have difficult remaining games. UA still has a path at 3-6 but has difficult remaining games and the donors are already passing the hat for money to possibly buyout their HC.

Stanford of course has 7 losses and will not be eligible. Cal would love for Colorado to ultimately win the Big 12 and qualify for the CFP. That would potentially open up a better bowl slot for Cal. Cal needs to win tomorrow, beat Stanford and then play loose in Dallas vs SMU and try and spoil SMU's season.

If Cal ends up at 6 they could very well end up in Shreveport again. The program needs a better bowl destination than that. Many of the bowls are early in the bowl cycle and finals would once again be taken during a good part of bowl prep. The Sun, Alamo or possibly the Holiday bowl would be better for the players and program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this year the only Pac-12 bowl that is early in the cycle is the LA Bowl. Everything else (even Shreveport) is Dec 27 or later.

The mandate that all men's programs have to move be fully endowed is as big of a Cal Athletics move since I guess Barbour was about to drop some sports, but I would argue more direction setting, and not just a short term band-aid statement.
