2 of 9.... interesting.
Assuming OSU and WSU are in favor, how could Cal and Stanford not be?
Do you really need an explanation?

Welp, this is just about the end of Cal football. What a shame. Out of all this, I honestly kind of feel worse for the likes of Oregon State and Wazzu.
While I feel they're probably as depressed as us right now, I do think both programs can be successful at the MWC level... if SDSU can fund a successful D1 program that can get to a NCAAM BB title and be ranked for most of a decade in football, so can they. They have all the ingredients that have made Boise, along with teams like Utah pre Pac, successful... passionate local fanbases being the biggest thing. It'll probably require some difficult decisions but over time their football programs can still maintain something of what was. And if the Big 12 ever decides to further grow their footprint, they are natural choices.

Its not the end. But its likely the end as we knew football before.

I don't think OSU or Wazoo will have any problems or hesitation joining the Mountain West. Its a step down. But what's the alternative? What will be missed? Tradition? That's out the door already. Rivalries? Less important. Rose Bowl? Gone long ago. Survival? Probably the most important element at this point.

Doing the math. If AZ leaves, that leaves 8. If UO and UW confirm their departure, that leaves 6. I believe that's the minimum number for an athletic conference. But the taking from the Mountain West is not going to be easy. They have protected themselves quite nicely. $33-34 million to leave and would they even want to?

I have "a friend" in the administration. There are currently no talks with the B1G despite social media.

So, no talks with CAL and the BIG, but they are still considering both CAL and Stanford?

You left out my "Do they have the best kept secret in college football?" Yes, I need an explanation for the best kept secret.

It's incredibly difficult to believe that the B1G was not able to keep the UO/UW invite even remotely secret, but they have managed to keep assurances they've provided to Cal and Stanford on an invite on super secret lockdown.

It's public knowledge that the B1G presidents want the Bay Area schools, the money with media partners would need to be found and this can happen before 2024.

problem with the MWC economics is that SDSU loses significant money on Athletics even with the success of hoop. SNapdgragon (new stadium) is helping but really because the university and oeprators are pushing a TON of events in there. That model is closed with Panoramic Hill people. So now you still have lots of the challenges with Big time sports but not the revenue to support.

That is why I am pushing Big Sky like path. Costs come WAY down

Yes, but public knowledge that the B1G wish Cal/Stanford could join the conference and a concrete offer for money are not the same thing.

How can you not support the concrete offer of money if you don't have anything concrete to fall back on?

Perhaps the 2/9 support was just bogus.

Assuming OSU and WSU are in favor, how could Cal and Stanford not be? Have we resigned to dropping out of college football? Do they have they best kept secret in all of college football?
If we're reading the tea leaves, it's because even though they might not have an offer now, they expect to be able to get one.

To me, it's more like watching the house you grew up burn to the ground with all of your photos and memorabilia inside, and a couple of your siblings set the fire.

My guess is that Arizona wants to conduct due diligence one last time before bolting to the B12.

Robbins, UA's President, just joined the Pac's Executive Comte as of July 1, so it would be bad optics for him to cut-and-run before the others. Plus, he needs to keep his contacts (aka other Presidents) thinking positively of him, as he'll likely put his hat in the ring for Stanford's new President.

Once this ball started rolling, I never thought the Big10 would take more than Oregon and Washington initially. They can get them for a 60ish% share (which looks like it is happening). Then they can stand pat or wait a bit and get Cal and Furd for a 30-40ish% share. Its basic leverage and negotiations and there absolutely is value in Cal and Furd in the Big10 but why wouldnt they get us as cheaply as possible? I really hope this happens cause the alternative is bleak for Cal athletics otherwise

this is our only hope.

They took UCLA and USC first

then take UO and UW (for less)

then hopefully take us for even less.

but its a depressing day, to see that we are worth so little. But thats the reality, we need the life raft so that we even have a chance to turn it around.

Thank you Knolwton and Christ for putting us in this position in the first place. If this was done in 2010 we'd hv a seat at the table alongside Stanford. Shame...

i understand, on the flip side, we need to be talking to the ACC, B12 and SEC to give ourselves some leverage, so that they believe we'd potentially sign on for cheap with them.

And in order to lock in the bay area tv market, two top tier institutions, and also the CA recruiting ground, B1G will speed up their evaluation of us and extend us an offer.

We cannot let the B1G think that we will just sit there and wait and beg till 2024.

Thats also how business is conducted. Yet for some reason I highly doubt thats happening.

I still feel like this is the most likely scenario. The B1G presidents have been pretty public about wanting Stanford/Cal. Just gotta make the money work.

I get that the Big Ten has all the leverage here, but they are also likely trying to put together a late night + additional normal time games package for TV. Does a TV partners want games when 2 of 4 teams or 4 of 6 teams are going to be finacially strapped and potentially non competitive? I mean maybe... If there is one big name eastern team playing weekly on the West coast, some people will watch. And probably more than if it's a game with two west coast teams.
