So what exactly did Martin achieve at Cal?

He recruited better than most before and after his time. Can't argue with those results.
He perhaps represented a type of coach that players, parents, and the Cal community could get behind. I didn't know the man myself but many have said that with his own personal history as a person and player he connected with parents, particularly those who saw a bit of their own sons in him.

But, for all of the great recruiting and personality he was pretty underwhelming in terms of his success when it all came down to the results on the floor.

Us "people" who recognize his performance are just factually looking at the results. All coaches have to deal with injuries and I don't feel the need to view other coaches results any differently or offer them excuses. None of that makes me feel any more happy about their lack of success.

What's telling here is that the question is who "made you happy" and you are twisting it to "who had the best results."

Even setting aside the terrible week Cal had leading up to that loss against Hawaii, judging an entire season, in hindsight, based solely on the result of a one and done playoff is certainly a choice. It's not how I choose to enjoy sports. I enjoy the ride. For example:

I'm a Kings fan. This season has been SO fun. It made me so happy. If the Kings get swept by the Warriors, it will not take away the joy I got this season watching the Kings every night.

I'm a Giants fan. The 2021 season so incredibly fun. It made me so happy. The Giants lost a 5-game series in the last inning against the Dodgers. It did not reduce how happy that Giants team made me for 6 months.

So yeah. That Cal basketball season ended badly. But it was a great ride and for four months, that team made me happy. Did you refuse to enjoy that season as it happened? After every win, did you sit there with your arms crossed telling everyone around you, "Why are you happy? I'll enjoy myself when we make the Sweet 16! Otherwise, I'm not happy!"

Enjoy the ride.

coach martin did a lotta things that are not comprehended by casual uninformed fans that got kinda simplistic knowledge of the inner working of the cal basketball program, consider:

final four talent: if silent commitment caleb swanigan's guardian roosevelt barnes had signed his letter of intent, we had potential big dance national championship talent with a starting line up of caleb at the 5, young ivee at the 4, jaylen at the 3, the bird at the 2 & t-wall at the 1 with j-mat as a scoring machine 6th man and kam & the king sharing back up post duty minutes...shocky honestly thought we wuz gonna win a national championship at some point with coach martin

returning talent: if his oldest son 3.67 gpa joshua had been cleared by berkeley admissions off the wait list, the bears team the following year had a public commitment from jemarl baker who flipped to kentucky, already enrolled former mcdonalds all american kentucky transfer marcus lee, a silent commitment from frenchman olivier sarr who flipped to wake forest & later kentucky along with leading for mcconald's all american jordan brown plus the porter fam deal with the nation's #1 ranked prospect michael would've continued the elite talent level in berkeley...that would've arguably been even more talent than the final four talent referenced above

recruiting: coach martin wuz the most effective head coach recruiter in the history of cal basketball (and football), he was tireless in approaching the top high schoolers in the nation in selling berkeley's reputation as the #1 ranked public university in the world, he understood the value of academics & moms trusted him as a black father figure/mentor with their sons...cuonzo loved these young men & treated them with respect while instilling in them an expectation of physical intensity

recruiting angles/energy: coach martin understood how building trusting relationships & being visible 100% of the time on the summertime aau circuit wuz critical to targeting mcdonalds all americans...like coach montgomery he gave cal's monster class full access to his staff as a recruiting/gameday energy facilitator that could successfully attack opposing coaches like criminal dana altman, the corrupt donut boy of tuscon & ucla's rapist enabler steve alford

staff: cuonzo's 1st target upon accepting the cal position wuz offering the lone open assistant coach position to bishop o'dowd's lou richie who appreciated the offer but tole me he couldn't accept because of conflict of issues with ivan as his player, this wuz pure mastery by coach who then pivoted to hire recruiting dynamo (and dumb azz) yanni...and yeah the porter fam deal (michael jr wuz the #1 ranked player in his class) would've sent seismic shockwaves thru the collegiate basketball recruiting world for those who thought the ivan & jaylen diamonds are forever class wuz a fluke one off deal, nope biz as usual in berkeley

staff recruiting energy: coach martin surrounded himself with likable mostly young guys that recruited 24/7/365 that could build meaningful relationships with young black men & their families/coaches...the fox staff at 200+ years old wuz the oldest college basketball staff in the nation, that's something that's still lost on the dumb as **** con artist

s&c: look at the nba bodies of the bird, t-wall & j mat, s&c coach nicodemus christopher wuz the greatest s&c coach in the history of cal athletics, he got guys nba right & unlike the current football s&c program listened to shocky & incorporated yoga as part of the development process to ensure bend, flexibility & quick twitch movements...nico & his curvy brunette yoga female wife fallon currently live in denver (my daughter shay is a 1st year at denver law) & he's successfully training nba players...the current bb players (kinda like last season's cal's monster offensive line) move like granite statues on valium

study center: coach martin fully embraced the hard working professionals/educational mentors at the study center & this respect wuz reciprocated which is important for working together on academic silver bullet prospects with berkeley admissions

nutrition & sleep: this wuz a big deal to cuonzo & shocky, guys playing video games late at nite at 4th gen bear's bb house while eating doritos wuz a problem that wuz being addressed, the monster wuz a big proponent of turning off all internet services after 11:00 pm

chartered planes: this season the athletic department bureaucrats that are literally burning donors money booked a $40,000 prop plane chartered flight to the florida tournament that took 11 hours & resulted in an absolutely exhausted basketball team unable to compete...then our spineless athletic director knowlton got brainwashed by his #2 right arm jennifer simon-o'neil (who like the con artist is under investigation by the chancellor's office) that they had to spend an equal amount on the women's basketball team otherwise they would not be title ix compliant (and knowlton could be sentence to san quentin) which is a misinterpretation of title ix which is not share by any other athletic department in the nation...so then they sent charmin smith off on a $40,000 east coast recruiting trip which has resulted in zero results/prospects

selling tixs: coach martin embraced this important aspect of serving as a head coach...the 1st time the monster spoke to cuonzo & tracy webster they asked me what do we have to do to get more fans into haas?...tole them we needed an asian walk on so tracy & me put together a list of high gpa bay area asian ballers & this resulted in future son in law brendan glapion...shocky also tole them we need to connect with students that didn't already go to games, this resulted in cuozno speaking at dorms & the greek system along with shooting hoops with players & students at sproul plaza during the lunch hours on game weeks, can you even imagine the current head coach doing that?...bottom line, we averaged nearly 11,000 fans (many of whom had no affiliation with the university of california, warriors tixs are financially beyond the means of most bay area basketball fans)

students: coach shared my strongly held belief that berkeley students (and bay area high schoolers) should be offered free admission to every game just by showing a student id card at the gate...the thoroughly unqualified markeisha everett's beyond breaking bad plan to move the students to behind the basket would've never gained any traction...let's be honest, the con artist just don't care in building a future base of season tix fans/donors like eastcoastcal as long as their $1,900,000+ & $1,300,000+ salary weekly deposits show up on their bank statements every friday

nil: cuonzo would've raised millions from donors including shocky with his passionate requests for 100% buy in to support our annual top 20 program & yeah the cal's monster class as the most read thread in the history of college basketball fan message boards with 5,000,000+ views would be leading this charge

practice facility: this would've been already built, a modest men's & basketball facility in the haas parking lot with then doug goldman's lead $10,000,000 donation...done, team would be practicing in it today...instead bishop o'dowd just opened a $40,000,000 basketball/performance arts facility while the con artist is showing disinterested donors his time share architectural renderings of his $125,000,000+ (with change orders) quidditch facility that's never gonna get built

housing: with coach martin leading the charge, more donors would be supporting the benevolent 4th gen bear's heroic housing purchases for la casas poquito which are absolutely cute as **** and only a block or two away from haas

cal's monster class: my streak of 150+ home & away basketball games would still be intact, there's zero chance cuonzo would've allowed this energy to be censored/terminated

stormin' the floor: coach martin tole me multiple times he 100% loved the fan celebrations at the center of the universe, midcourt at haas (he did caution me to direct traffic to ensure we never got near the vanquished team's bench & players as they departed the court to avoid conflict/disrespect/pac 12 failure to control the crowd fines)

academics: remember taylor & me speaking with cuonzo along with steve & nick kerr prior to the year end team banquet in a quiet area, he wuz sincerely more proud of the 1000 apr than anything that happened on the basketball court...his players academic dreams & successes were cherished as he considered these young men as part of his & roberta's extended family

aziz is truly an impact post player with +1 athleticism & potential nba upside

bandaogo scored 14 points on an efficient 5-9 field goals (love the alley oop lobs over the top), got a fluid free throw shooting stroke 3-4 free throws, knocked down a manute bol 3 pointer from the 7th green at shadow creek, absolutely dominated the glass with 16 rebounds & perhaps most important committed only 1 turnover

defensively he alters shots in the paint but needs to work hard in a s&c program to get his body right for the next level...his listed height of 7' appears to be legit but does not look like he's currently carrying the listed 230 lbs...with more muscle aziz will float less on the perimeter offensively & impose his will more around the bucket and defensively not lose position in the paint against heftier post players

yeah make no mistake about it aziz bandaogo is truly unforgettable, #55 gonna ride with me boss

What exactly is twisted again? In a completely different thread I asked a simple question on who people thought was the last coach that made them happy. There were answers all over the map because people value different things. You must agree that happiness about a coach is not mutually exclusive with the results on the court. My comments on this thread were in relation to 5* players that never materialized into results. I don't get the connection you are making to other threads and why you think I am twisting things.

coach martin wuz in year 3 of this championship building process, if you didn't think the ride wuz fun with a sold out haas at every game with almost 11,000 screaming fans celebrating a 18-0 home record & heading in the right direction that's only because u don't truly understand the components of building a championship program

Shockster, as you dream about Martin and final 4's at Cal, Martin had exactly one great recruiting class, which he parlayed from a #14 preseason ranking into a #23 national ranking going into the tourney (Cal ended up unranked after the Hawaii fiasco, but we all know that wasn't his fault). Your what-ifs and speculations had he stayed are just that, because they never happened. The highly-rated recruits that Martin had lined up prior to his departure never lived up to their hype, and not a single one of them, or any of the Cal players that transferred out, followed him to Missouri. And unless Martin was planning on booting one of his coaches and hiring Michael Porter, Sr., the Porter twins were never coming to Cal, despite what you make up. If you or anyone else can provide proof to the contrary I will gladly submit my mea culpa. Maybe you could point out a post in your monster thread that mentioned the Porter twins and Cal before Martin bolted.

I fully understand your need to prop up coach Martin after all the time, energy, and intellectual capital you spent on him in your monster thread, but the truth is after 14 seasons he has proven himself to be a rather mediocre coach and recruiter with a record that actually resembles Fox at the same stage in their careers.

Had I wished he stayed at Cal in light of what followed? Sure, but Missouri showed us what he was capable of.

Yes, and I was highly excited about it at the time. My point is it was proven to be not sustainable, short of hiring top prospects' dads. It's like you won the lottery for 100 million bucks one time, but weren't able to spend it all, and the remainder and all the assets went away after that year. Good times for sure, but its time to move on.

Marcus Lee, Charlie Moore and Jemari Baker were a good follow up. Tough to say that a coach who was only at Cal three years and was recruiting well at Cal would not have continued doing so.

But we will never know. I also think Snyder would have gotten us a Rose Bowl(s) if he stayed. Snyder, Mooch and Martin are the three coaches that left Cal for more money and I think all three really could have brought us long term success if they stayed. We will never know, and I think that all three should be seen as "what ifs" but instead there are some who treat Martin differently and view him very negatively. I don't think that is fair or reasonable.

the shockster now got new priorities in life that are a matter of life & death

still tryna keep an open mind re: potentially falling in love again (the future is unknowable for all of us), the construction of coach madsen's staff will be absolutely critical to the trajectory of the program (listed in alphabetical order):

ben braun: would be receptive to discussions re: a role with the new staff

jaylen brown: next contract could be the nba's supermax payout of $290,000,000+, my yoga buddy will not actively support cal basketball until there is a new athletic director

jay john: brilliant tactical right arm for both hall of famers lute olson & mike montgomery, the former oregon state head coach knows more about basketball than the last 2 head coaches combined multiplied by a 100...already under contract in the athletic department

justin labagh: the former cal walk-on is the winningest coach in the history of college basketball, very happy at san francisco city college (now with chair status) & thinks mark madsen is "a great guy, a great person"

jordan mathews: playing very well right now overseas, thinks he can move up another euro level to a bigger stage pursuing his hoop dreams

adam mazarei: fast rising recruiter with west coast roots: https://vucommodores.com/coach/adam-mazarei/

richard midgley: former bears sharpshooter is now a scout for the new jersey, would be receptive to discussing a potential position with the new staff

john montgomery: not looking likely right now, could be perceived as a conflict of interest

todd okeson: highly respected bigs coach who developed fardaws aimaq & aziz bandaogo

leon powe: teams actively recruit against cal scaring players that "ur gonna flunk out in berkeley," leon as a former homeless kid living out of a car in oakland would be an absolute home run hire in speaking with moms on the recruiting trail that their sons can earn berkeley degrees

ivan rabb: the ncca created the 2 new development assistant coaching positions effective july 1st with the intent of getting former players to return to campus to earn their degrees, young ivee would be a perfect candidate to work with the bigs while finishing his last 2 years of academic work so he can hang his berkeley diploma next to his younger brother tamarik's diploma who went to a junior college before earning a coveted haas biz ad degree

jerome randle: offered a developmental coach position on the staff by coach madsen but cannot accept it at this time for non basketball related reasons, rome truly bleeds blue & gold

lou richie: the legendary bishop o'dowd head coach would be receptive to discussions with coach madsen, brian shaw has told him that mark wuz "the best teammate" in his nba career

theo robertson: interviewed with coach madsen, no decision yet

scott thom: the minnesota timberwolves performance coach would be a home run hire in returning him to the bay, a tireless worker that customizes his programs based upon the player's individual needs

ayinde ubaka: oakland's soul of mischief needs to finish off his berkeley degree

mr x: a former head coach who is older than madsen (47 years old) who will be hired as the associate head coach

this video kinda sums it all up, life is not linear, love u sweetie

the underdog (someone who rebels against reality then becomes the most dangerous person on earth#

congrats to coach madsen's 1st official hire in adam mazarei from vanderbilt, he's a mutt like shocky with a half chinese/half iranian family tree

adam is regarded as a relentless recruiter & gotta love the nba vibe (mazarei worked for multiple years as a player development & then assistant coach with the memphis grizzlies) coach madsen is building with his staff

fun fact: the minnesota t-wolves got a nba play in game this friday april 14th

right now the plan is for both elite impact starters with potential nba upside jalen cone & fardaws aimaq to take their official visits together to berkeley on april 20-22nd, it is expected that the majority of the staff will be in place for this important recruiting weekend which will also likely include other potential future bears transfer portal prospects

cal alum, u don't get it & that's ok, your unhappiness with the coach martin era of building a program that annually recruited the top players in the country & would've eventually competed in my opinion for a national championship is probably because you've never truly built anything in ur life & therefore you don't really understand how mistakes are part of the growth process but that you grow from them which is exactly what wuz happening in berkeley

coach martin wuz in year 3 of this championship building process, if you didn't think the ride wuz fun with a sold out haas at every game with almost 11,000 screaming fans celebrating a 18-0 home record & heading in the right direction that's only because u don't truly understand the components of building a championship program

and not tryna pick on u, there's a cadre of eyeores on this board including civil bear & bearlycaring that also don't get it ether...my guess is that ur cadre of nega bears will also find fault with coach madsen, got it

Your insecurities seem to manifest themselves through your posts and rapport with people on this board. Case in point with this post above. Shocky, what are you covering up behind your false bravado? What drives your need to attack me rather than simply acknowledging we have a mutual difference in opinion? What do you know about me as a person that you feel emboldened to pass judgement on my understanding of what I like or not?

You hold yourself up as a product of Cal and a master supporter of what it represents as a great institution, but for me your facade on this board doesn't idealize what Cal is as a place for open discussion, inclusion, and sharing of perspectives. The people I know at Cal won't easily be bullied or cowed by your personal attacks.

Based on your accounting of the situation, I still don't agree with your perspective.

Here is another example where you feel the need to attack other posters. What is the basis for inferring that the color of a poster's skin has anything to do with their opinions? Are all the white Cal alumni racists in your view?

I hope the moderators are reviewing your posts without having an ethical bias for your wallet.

calalum, ur taking this way too personal, ok?

ima arguably the most influential golf course architecture ranker/rater in the world, my favorite conversations re: golf course design are with the game's leading living architects bill coore, tom doak or gil hanse as they are very knowledge & it's fun to learn from their vast experiences/remarkable insights

on the other hand in my travels often meet guys like u that tell me that their club/course is a "really great golf course, should be in the top 100" which is inaccurate about 99%+ of the time...the monster just smiles at them, it's not worth my time to tryna educate them otherwise

that's just silly, of course not

in fact my favorite architects bill coore, tom doak & gil hanse are all white and ima also a huge fan of mad dog who is quite white

maybe coach needs a suntan or something?

People are never going to agree about Martin's impact on Cal, mostly because there's disagreement about whether he was going to stay long-term (as Shocky thinks), or was always likely to go elsewhere (as I think). One of the things that has always bothered me about Martin is that he doesn't have much of a coaching tree, I think because he never stayed anyplace more than three or four years, so never built up a cadre of assistants or former players who could move on to other coaching jobs. That's obviously in contrast to Monty, for example, from who we're getting Madsen. I just think to have a successful program, you need to have some continuity over more than three or four years. I know Shocky thinks Martin was chased out by the administration.

while the nation's former #1 ranked player & mcdonalds all american ivan rabb wuz playing in the nba for a couple of seasons earning a couple of million dollars (which he partially utilized to buy a family home in antioch) before plantar fasciitis stopped the basketball from bouncing anymore, young ivee's studious younger brother tamarik rabb went to a junior college & then graduated from cal's prestigious haas business school

now ivan is gonna real soon be finishing his final 2 years of academic work so he can earn his berkeley degree too

tami rabb is truly the moms of the year & academic/community activist lou richie is a true mentor to young men who often lack a father figure

shocky signed up back in the day for the magic of cal basketball, stormin' the floor after epic victories over nationally ranked opponents & the excitement of cal's monster class but in retrospect it's gonna be taylor & me shedding tears of happiness at young ivee's graduation ceremony in berkeley that we will never forget, that moment will be magnificent, can't explain it

the super secretive gallipoli plan:

the vast majority of cal basketball fans are under this impression that the recent creation of a new nil program is the program's endeavor into this realm

they are not aware of the gallipoli plan which wuz created as a one & done last season...the g-plan (as its referenced in hushed whispers) paid $2,000 per month for 5 months during the season for a total of $10,000 to each scholly player

the real brilliance of the gallipoli plan is in the workaround with foreign players who are not eligible for nil dollars as it would impact their student visas in the united states...when the team traveled to germany last season the 6 foreign born players were paid for zoom call nil work

and know u know but don't tell nobody

It is really too bad that Caleb Swanigan passed away. He was so young. He would been great to see in a Cal uniform ballin with Rabb and J Brown.

george, coach martin tole me that the guardian for caleb swanigan (who wuz a silent commit, real men wear fuschia) refused to sign the necessary letter of intent (caleb wuz under 18) unless we paid for all of his travel expenses to all of the california golden bears basketball games, otherwise he wuz gonna keep him home at nearby purdue

me & taylor once added up all the expenses paid by her dad in attending all the games for multiple seasons, that's 30+ games & around $100,000 a season...so for $100k we could've bought the signature of roosevelt barnes but coach martin is a man of integrity & we were gonna win a monster national championship without cheating

point guard: tyrone wallace, 2nd round overall 60th pick in the 2016 nba draft by the utah jazz
shooting guard: jabari bird, 2nd round overall 56th pick in the 2017 nba draft by the boston celtics
swing forward: jaylen brown, 1st round overall 3 pick in the 2016 nba draft by the boston celtics
big forward: ivan rabb, 2nd round overall 35 pick in the 2017 nba draft by the memphis grizzlies
center: caleb swanigan, 1st round overall 26 pick in the 2017 nba draft by the portland trailblazers
6th man: jordan mathews, as a senior started at gonzaga in leading them to the 2017 national championship game, signed nba summer league contract with the new orleans pelicans

make no mistake about it, that's the roster for a national championship program

shocky gotta lotta interests that are way more important than cal basketball these days but those were special days for cal's monster class in building (and yeah mistakes were made along the way, that's just part of the process) something magical, the only thing that wuz "sad" in retrospect wuz not recognizing the mental health challenges of caleb & the bird

yeah who knew adam mazarei is wax?

6'11" 245 lbs texas tech grad transfer portal super senior with 1 year of remaining eligiblity fardaws aimaq is a key target for coach madsen along with his friend/former utah vally teammate trey woodbury (who is awaiting approval notification from the ncca for his appeal for another season due to an injury 2 years ago that caused him to miss a year)

fardaws started his career at mercer, played a season & then redshirted a year after transferring to utah valley state where he blew up winning the wac player of the year award & also leading the nation in rebounds with 15+ per game...aimaq declared for the nba draft in 2022 & ultimately transferred to texas tech (with mark's approval, he really does put his player's best interests 1st) where he averaged 11.1 ppg & 7.9 rpg before a 11th game injury derailed his season

check out the athleticisim & innate sense for the game in this utah valley playing clips, gotta love the alley oop beautiful lobs, that's just good coaching too

like shareef abdur rahim who wuz attracted to berkeley because of its muslim community, fardaws (who is muslim) is also considering a move to the diverse & beautiful san francisco bay area...aimaq wuz born & grew up in vancouver, his dad faramarz is from afghanistan and moved to germany & then canada to avoid the soviet-afghan war

coach madsen got 4 strong hoopers returning in grant newell, jalen celestine, devin askew & nd okafor, the potential additions of elite talent in fardaws aimaq & trey woodbury could be the right infusions of talent to create a team that is well coached (a false narrative often repeated on this board is that mark fox wuz a strong development/gameday mind, that's not even close to reality) & that plays together with a much faster pace nba style of play & fiery intensity kinda like their new head coach

the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world
as shared by the monster a week ago, fardaws aimaq is gonna follow his old head coach madsen to their new home in the san francisco bay area

and under new conditions we are not alone

very important stamp of approval for new assistant coach matt scherbenske from his former student the big maple

scherbenske is regarded as an outstanding recruiter and player at both kentucky & oral roberts back in the day

more importantly matt wuz the bears video coordinator for mike montgomery for 2 years, this is an outstanding impact hire of someone who gets berkeley & the academics at the #1 ranked public university in the world

plus he got good hair
