Some info on scholly economics. Bears are hardly hurting by being a public school in CA, global academic brand, exceptional swimming history, great coaching, and improving facilities. Deep financial aid pool relative to private schools (LSJU, 'SC, Ivies) is the only missing piece.

BD and all ye scholly/recruiting economics majors here - do you reckon there's any underlying truth to these Swimswam comments on Trojans' Kendyl Stewart redshirting for just the fall semester this year??

"I’m not sure I understand the reason for all these people red-shirting for one semester. It appears like they are manipulating the system in some way, but I don’t know enough about the rules to know for sure. Can anyone help out with an explanation of this."

"yes they are manipulating the system….trying to create gap space in the scholarship game!"

"I’m not an expert by any means on this, but from what I understand, it allows USC to juggle its scholarship money so that they have a lot to offer potential recruits while retaining all of their high end talent for championship season. USC also offers non-athletic scholarships, but I’m not sure if that plays a part in it too."

Personally would be quite surprised if the above accusations/insinuations actually have an iota of truth embedded in them. But otoh U$C did pull in one of the strongest recruiting class of 2016 (perhaps more highly-rated than even the Furd's super-class!), and that straightaway following their induction of 13 in their frosh class of 2015...

Or maybe after re-evaluating her chances @ Olympic trials upon Dana's stunning return to form & competition, not to mention the rising stars of Katie McLaughlin & Kelsi Worrell in the 100 Fly, Kendyl simply decided that it may be prudent to cut short her original redshirt plans haha

Return of Kendyl Stewart Improves USC’s Chances In Pac-12, NCAA

Stewart, third at last year’s NCAA Championships in the 100 fly, is a huge re-addition for the Trojan women, who are red-hot after beating defending national champs Cal last month. She’s another instance of a well-documented trend for USC of having top-flight swimmers sit out the fall semester before returning to compete at Pac-12s and NCAAs.

Salo's been doing this for awhile, so there's some advantage but I don't get it. Stacks them for the second semester with PAC duals, PACs, and NCAAs. Probably works best with locals who can live at home and train with the Condom club team. Teri wants to mix her froskies into the team as soon as possible and qualifies most for NCAAs at their Fall taper meet. Durden waits until PACs. Don't follow 'SC closely enough to know Salo's schedule. If it worked for everyone, would be more common.

Wow, 2 lifetime bests by Abbey in the sprint frees (long course) whilst untapered is boding well for Olympic Trials!

You go gal and kill it @ Rio this summer...follow that up by finally uniting with the Dream Team and leading Bears to a few National titles in the face of a growing Furdie juggernaut threat (Ledecky, Manuel, Neal, Hu, Howe, Eastin, Drabot, Szekely, Voss, Byrnes & co.) !!

Weitzeil followed up her blazing 50 from last night with another lifetime best time in the 100 of 53.77, pushing her up to sixth in the world this year. In addition, that swim makes her the fourth fastest American swimmer in this Olympic cycle, behind only Simone Manuel, Missy Franklin, and Katie Ledecky. Manuel is widely seen as the favorite to take one of the two individual spots in the event, but Weitzeil is very much in the mix for the remaining spot.

Abbey Weitzeil Misses 50 Free American Record By .01 in Austin

19-year old Canyons Aquatics swimmer Abbey Weitzeil has missed the American Record by .01 seconds at the American Short Course Championships in Austin, Texas.

The meet, while not a formally-recognized National Championship by USA Swimming, has still attracted a layer of top talent to Texas, even with the Southern Premier meet in Knoxville and the Arena Pro Swim Series meet in Orlando happening simultaneously.

On the men's side, the meet also serves as an NCAA last-chance meet.

That top-level talent on the women's side includes Weitzeil and a handful of her Canyons Aquatic Club teammates. On a leadoff leg of the Canyons 200 free relay on Saturday, Weitzeil swam a 21.28, which just misses Lara Jackson's 2009 21.27 as the American Record and fastest-ever time in the event. Jackson's swim was also done on a relay leadoff.

Weitzeil's is the fastest time in history done by a teenager.

Current top 10 of All-Time:

Lara Jackson, 2009 21.27
Abbey Weitzeil, 2016 21.28
Simone Manuel, 2015 21.32
Farida Osman, 2016 21.32
Lara Jackson, 2008 21.33
Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, 2011 21.34
Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, 2012 21.35
Lara Jackson, 2009 21.36
Lara Jackson, 2008 21.37
Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, 2011 21.38

Weitzeil will have one more shot at the record in the individual 50 free final at the end of the session.

Congrats to Abbey, terrific accomplishment and bodes well for next season with the Bears. Will be a force from 50 to 200 and on relays.

That being said, why is she bothering with SCYs right now? The whole point of deferring is to qualify for the Olympics. Durden basically forfeit PAC-12s to give his best swimmers more LCM training to prep for the Olympics. Abbey's been a known quantity in SCYs for awhile, but she needs work in LCMs. This year's a bust for both Abbey and Cal if she doesn't make the US team in any of the 50, 100, 200 Frees or the 400 or 800 Free relays. Another NCAA title for the 2016 Bears with Abbey even without Cierra and McL.

The American Short Course Championships in Austin, TX had an unusual format of LCM for two days followed by SCY for two days. Abbey swam a 53.77 in the 100m earlier in that meet. That's a good in-season time (may even be a personal best for her). I wonder if Canyon's trains primarily in a 25y pool (like most age group programs that have to share pool time with recreational swimmers, etc.) and her coaches wanted some LCM vs. SCY benchmarks to assess how her training was translating to LCM. Also, this year her dryland may be more endurance-based (for LCM) than plyo-based (better for SCY/SCM with all the walls). Thoughts?

Definitely fair points not considered, thanks. Olympic years are always tough, but does seem like Durden handled it a little bit better than Teri. Seemed like Teri's team swam too much LCM in season and had to scramble more than normal (especially wrt relays) at PACs. Injuries are going to happen, but it's a little frustrating that the women may miss out on another title this year and will have an uphill climb vs LSJU for the next few seasons.

Men's team wasn't favored to win this season, but looks like Durden's team will be above 18, depending on Finn and if he needs some relay only sprinters. PACs matter more for LSJU and 'SC, but winning NCAAs is never easy and Bears have to thread the needle, especially with the diving challenges.

Cheers BD & bb for your excellent commentaries and thoughts!

My read of the situation, FWIW - without a doubt Abbey's training regiment @ Canyons has been focussed almost exclusively on long course on this Olympic cycle. It just happens that this focus meet to assess where the Canyons stable is at their training gives everyone an opportunity to test their in-season mettle, in both LCM & SCY.

I get the impression from Abbey's social media @ Winter Nats & the Austin Swim Series that there was a wee bit of frustration her LCM times hadn't dropped as fast/much as she'd had wished for in light of the intensive work, both in the pool and on dryland, that she has put in under Coach Stickels' guidance. So I think that these strong results will further renew her confidence and light a fire under her Rio campaign!

Abbey did after all deliver lifetime bests in both her 50m (24.72...PB was 24.80 from 2014) & 100m (53.77...PB was 54.00 from Austin) frees at this meet in the middle of a heavy training cycle. Those performances now put her in serious contention for a Team USA spot in the 50 (alongside Simone & Madison - would be sure sweet to have 2 Bears repping this event!), and a favourite for the 400 free relay squad (+ Missy, Ledecky, Manuel).

Since Missy has indicated she won't be contending for a 100 free individual slot, Abbey will just have to get past one of the furdette pair @ trials to likely secure her spot, which looks very doable esp if her 53.77 was achieved untapered & unshaved as reported (not sure whether I'd buy into claims of swimming here without any rest at all tho lol). On a sobering note, significantly bigger time drops will be required @ Rio if we hope to be competitive with the Oz & Euro sprint heavyweights - could take mid 53s to qualify @ US trials, low 53s to final @ Rio, and low 52s for gold (or even to medal at all)!

I'm opting to view Abbey's 50y free AR as just icing on the cake in the longer scheme of things, since Weitzeil will have plenty of opportunities under Teri to break that record over & over again...tho I'm sure she would love to rightfully reclaim her 100y free AR from Simone (46.09 @ 2015 NCAAs) later today lol

So my take here is that the SCY portion of the meet are just natural by-products of the impressive strides made in the long course area which is the focus of her training. Incidentally, if Abbey wasn't really rested at all here (partially supported by the observation that she died somewhat on her back half & finish in her 100m free performance, in spite of achieving a PB there), would partly account for the record swims Weitzeil had put in short course-wise yesterday, since she'd have a bit of extra rest after the LCM races...

Canyons' Abbey Weitzeil has certainly had herself a nice meet at the 2016 American Short Course Championships in Austin.

A day after crushing the 50-yard free American record, she put herself in position to capture the 100-yard free record as well.

This morning, Weitzeil went out two tenths under Simone Manuel's American-record pace before struggling a bit in the final 10 yards en route to a 46.47.

Regardless, that is still the third-fastest time ever, behind only Manuel's American record of 46.09 from the 2015 NCAA Championships and Weitzeil's personal best of 46.29 from the 2014 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.

Weitzeil broke the pool record of 46.82 set by Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace while swimming for Auburn during the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Weitzeil is on fire this weekend in Austin. She already moved to sixth in the world in the 50-meter free with a 24.72 and seventh in the world in the 100-meter free with a 54.00 during the LCM portion of the meet.

Lost in the euphoria over Abbey's swims, her club teammate and potential 2017 recruit Nikol Popov swam a 2:08.92 in the 200 Breast at the same meet. Not quite an NCAA scorer yet, but easily in the field and would be second all-time at Cal. Popov was generally considered only a sprint breastroker, but even more valuable to the Bears than previously thought.

Quite right, BD!

We've been keeping an eye on Nikol on these pages, but had previously considered her primarily as a sprint breast prospect who could help out on the medley relays.

Notably, Popov swam a 2:16.34 in this 200 distance at the same meet a year ago, so some impressive improvements indeed! (esp if unrested)

2:08.92 is a 'B' cut, and would rank Nikol #23 for 2016 NCAA Division I qualification (Marina currently = #28 with her 2:09.79)

Nikol is a pretty solid 200 IMer too. I would she think she is our number one recruit for next year with Marina graduating. SC doesn't need another breast stroker. In fact, I would like to recruit depth at the position and go after Maggie Aroesty also.
