Props & respect (if slightly reluctantly haha) to Simone for lowering her 100 free American Record in the A final tonight, from 46.75 down to a sizzling 46.62!!! That's also just 0.01 (the smallest of margins) off the 46.61 U.S. Open Record by Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace.

Yeah we can't currently match Stanfurd's depth & top end in the sprints, but Missy has more than a great chance to win the 200 free and be in the top 3 for the 100 free at 2015 NCAAs, assuming she'll be swimming those 2 races and her back spasms are no longer a serious issue by then...

---------

Update: Furds A team wins the 400 free relay in a time of 3:10.77! For context, the American Record (U of A) = 3:10.63!! Would have beaten Stanfurd's own title winning time of 3:10.83 from 2014 NCAAs!!!

Teri plays her cards pretty close to the vest. That being said, latest rumors are that women may add as many as two for next semester. One would help a little bit, the other not so much. Can't see both coming and have no idea where they'd get scholly funds. We'll see.

Update on an earlier women's rumor. One mid-year addition is still evolving and the other one is definitely dead for mid-year, but may still happen at the end of the season.

Thanks for the update, BD. Look forward to this potential addition after the winter break then :cheer

...

Auburn, Georgia, Cal, UCLA, and Virginia, Florida State, and Virginia Tech headline what will be an equally-good meet to watch this weekend, the Georgia Fall Invitational. Both the Cal men and women will be in attendance, making this a must watch meet, and the addition of Auburn and Virginia will only add to the fun.

Release: Wednesday 12/03/2014

For its final competition of the fall semester, California travels back across the country for the Georgia Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday in Athens, Ga., setting up a challenging three days against swimmers from five other top-20 programs.

Cal, at No. 5, and Georgia, at No. 2, are the highest rated teams competing. The field also includes No. 6 Auburn, No. 9 Virginia, No. 15 Penn State and No. 19 UCLA, plus Florida State, Harvard and Virginia Tech.

"I think it will give us a good check-in and let us know things that we're doing well and things we probably need to keep working on," head coach Teri McKeever said. "The racing piece is really important. There have been a lot of good times put up around the country, so it will give us a pretty good indication individually and collectively where we stand in different events. That's an important motivating factor."

Also adding motivation will be the opportunity to compete in a three-day championship format with the Golden Bear men's squad.

"I think it's great that the men are going to be there," McKeever added. "When you get to Pac-12s and NCAAs, it's single gender. So this is a really nice opportunity for both programs to support each other. We get to see them work every day. I think they can be a motivating and inspiring force."

Swimmers can enter up to four individual events with unlimited relays. Prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET (6:30 a.m. PT) each day, with finals starting at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT) Friday and Saturday and at 3 p.m. ET (12 noon PT) on Sunday.

In October, Cal flew to the All Florida Invitational in Gainesville, where they took second in a three-day event - the Bears first East Coast trip of the year. Following the Georgia meet, Cal will be idle from competition until the Pac-12 dual season begins in January.

Great swim from Cierra, she's definitely in NCAAs with that time. Klaren's time looks to be on the bubble, so she needs to improve on that to be safely invited to NCAAs. It's early, but looks like Missy may not swim the 500 free at NCAAs.

Stand corrected on Klaren's time, that's a borderline scorer at NCAAs, so she's in too. 1:55 is a championship scorer at NCAAs and the thinking may be that the 500 takes too much out of Missy since she almost certainly also swims two relays (200 free and 400 medley) relay on the first day.

Absolutely agree w/your astute observation on the 200 IM probably replacing the 500 free for Missy's Day 1 race for those very same reasons, BD! There was talk of Missy exploring the 200 IM when she had become a Golden Bear, but that got sort of shelved last season due to our need for her to fill in our weaknesses in the distance events, which Cierra will hopefully come to the rescue from henceforth...

Missy in the 200 IM would also be a direct shot at LSJU. They took two IMers and two distance swimmers in their 2015 recruiting class because of their weaknesses. Current LSJU team doesn't have scorers in either the 500 or 200 IM. OTOH, it appears that Georgia could have as many as 5 scorers in the 500. Yikes!

Hmmm, what was Missy's BR split? Like Kathleen, Missy does have some potential in the breast even tho she rarely swims it other than in the occasional IM. If we didn't need her free & back prowess so much in our relays, Missy could well become a secret weapon for the breast leg, if Marina, Maija, Celina & Yvette's development in this area isn't up to speed by March 2014...imo
