Question since I can't seem to access the stats, incl. those for the diving - we didn't bring our diving team to the invite, did we?

Just wondering how good/deep the Lady Bulldawg's divers are now that they don't have Laura Ryan to call upon, and how much that will impact the overall team scoring at this meet? Thx.

Neither Cal team brought divers. Women's team scores after day 1 are: Georgia-277, UVa-230, Cal-223. Georgia got 25 diving points and UVa got 19 diving points (both had two scoring divers). Bears got killed in the 500 free: Georgia-73 points (7 scorers), UVa-37 points (4 scorers), Cal-26 points (2 scorers). Cierra and Klaren should score at NCAAs, Georgia should have 5 scorers, and UVa should have 2 scorers.

ATHENS, Ga. Elizabeth Pelton edged teammate Missy Franklin to win the 200-yard individual medley in the fastest time in the nation so far this year, highlighting California's opening night at the Georgia Fall Invitational Friday.

Pelton, who finished fourth in the 200 IM at last season's NCAA Championships, came through in a personal-best 1:52.93, just out-touching Franklin, who was clocked in 1:52.99. Both times met the NCAA A automatic qualifying standard, and the Golden Bear tandem now ranks second and third, respectively, on Cal's all-time list. Only a 1:51.77 by Olympic medalist Caitlin Leverenz in 2012 stands ahead of them.

"I'm really proud of the effort of the girls tonight," head coach Teri McKeever said. "I think we showed a lot of fight, especially after a tough day of travel from the Bay Area to Georgia yesterday. Missy and Elizabeth staged a great race and we had a number of people pick up A times. We just need to keep it rolling again tomorrow."

Cal started off the meet with a come-from-behind win in the 200 free relay. The Bears were down by half a second to Georgia entering the final leg when Farida Osman closed with a 21.49 split to win the race to the wall. The Cal foursome of Franklin, Rachel Bootsma, Kaylin Bing and Osman finished in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:27.51 to Georgia's 1:27.83.

In the 500 free, freshman Cierra Runge hit the NCAA A mark with a time of 4:34.81, which was second to Leah Smith of Virginia (4:32.70). The mark also puts Runge at No. 2 on Cal's all-time list behind only Franklin's 4:32.66 from last season.

Osman placed third in the 50 free in 22.10 a personal best by 0.01 while Bing claimed the B final in 22.35.

In the final event of the night, the Bears' 400 medley relay of Pelton, Marina Garcia, Noemie Thomas and Franklin took second to Virginia in an NCAA A time of 3:31.25.

Overall, Cal had five swims that met the NCAA A standard and 11 more that met the NCAA B requirement.

The three-day meet features nine teams, including six of the top 25 programs in the country, and competition continues through Sunday. The Bears, who did not bring their divers to the meet, stand in third place with 223 points. Georgia is first with 277 points and Virginia second with 230.

Bartholomew, Franklin, and Kalisz grab 'A' cuts on Day Two Prelims of the Georgia Invite

400 IM

All 16 female swimmers that made the 400 IM finals slipped under the NCAA 'B' cut. The top three this morning were Georgia's Hali Flickinger (4:06.05), Cal's Celina Li (4:06.40) and Kaitlyn Jones of Virginia (4:08.55).

100 fly

The top 20 female swimmers finished under the NCAA 'B' cut of 54.49, while the A final is separated by less than eight tenths. Virginia's Ellen Williamson leads the field in 52.03, followed by Cal's Farida Osman (52.27) and Florida State's Chelsea Britt (52.31). This will be a very tight final with no clear favorite.

200 free

Cal's golden girl Missy Franklin was hot in the 200 free, blazing to a 1:43.31 finish ahead of teammate Elizabeth Pelton 1:44.19. 500 free champ Leah Smith of Virginia was just behind Pelton in 1:44.20, and looks primed for another great swim following her incredible 500s from prelims and finals yesterday. This event saw 16 B cuts, with Franklin going under the A cut of 1:43.90. Look for some more A cuts tonight, possibly from Pelton and Smith.

100 breast

Virginia's Laura Simon dominated the field this morning, finishing in 59.15, just off the A cut of 59.12. Auburn's Natasha Lloyd (1:00.28) and Annie Lazor (1:00.29) sit behind Simon, the only two other swimmers under 1:01. 13 swimmers posted B cuts here.

100 back

Courtney Barth0lomew of Virginia is certainly making a name for herself. After nearly breaking Natalie Coughlin's 100 back American Record last night, she holds the top seed with a 50.76, an incredible time nonetheless (as well as an A cut). Cal swimmers Melanie Klaren (51.98), Franklin (52.03), and Pelton (52.04) are all bunched up behind her. We haven't seen much 100 backstroke for Missy in SCY while she's been at Cal, and the reigning Olympic champion certainly has her work cut out for her. 23 swimmers earned B standards.

These events as well as the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay will be swum at finals at UGA, which are slated to begin at 5:30pm ET.

Urzainqu Garcia made it to A heat with a B qualifying time. Is this a good time that perhaps it might make the cut for the NCAA's or does she still have to drop her time significantly. I know she is better at the 200Br but hoping for improvement here too. You see all of these young breaststroke swimmers finishing ahead of her. Were they good before or is it coaching??? UVA swimmers are swimming lights out. Are they putting more emphasize on this meet to qualify, cause I thought we were too.

Thanks for the updates! (still can't access live results from the PC)

Nicely done from Celina, I think that time's an A cut , or close?

Yikes we always knew UGA had scary depth esp in the frees, but that sort of finish in the longer IM's rather intimidating (assuming their times were good, otherwise guess we can assume their opponents don't have depth in this event ~cough~)!

100 Fly: Farida second, 51.92. Noemie fourth, 52.21. Kelly Naze, 52.82.

Boots wins B final, 52.43. Jasmine second, 53.00.

Justin Lynch wins Men's final, 46.22.

Wow Missy! 1:41.23! Liz second, 1:43.13, Cierra third, 1:44.12, Camille fifth, 1:44.58, Caroline seventh, 1:45.51, Melanie tenth, 1:46.30. Rachel eleventh, 1:46.36.

Unless Acker improves, she is going to get replaced on the 4 x 200 relay team.

On the men's side, Long Gutierrez second, 1:35.50, Trent Williams third, 1:36.04.

100 Breast. Marina fifth, 1:01.26. If we could get Marina a second lower that would be huge for all of our medley relays. As of now, that time is borderline NCAA qualifier.

Katis wins men's 100 Breast, 52.09. At this moment, both men and women are in first place!

I thought Boots had a chance, but Bartholomew is on fire right now, 50.39. Boots second, 51.20, Missy third, 51.85, Liz fourth, 51.85, Melanie fifth, 51.86.

Murphy still dominating on the men's side, 45.55. Pebley fourth, 47.05.

Haha soooo darn happy that my half-empty perspective has been proven to be completely off the mark here!!!!! Yay!!!

Curious, what were their respective splits? Missy's I'm guessing in the upper 1:41 to 1:42 area based on her dominating individual swim earlier, and Liz maybe a sec and a half or 2 behind her? Hoping for a nice leadoff time from Cierra. And Camille's been having a great summer @ Pan Pacs so I'm rooting for some good things to come from her even if she isn't one of the usual headline-grabbing team members!

btw, very sweet re that 6:55.95 time - would have been the 4th fastest @ 2014 NCAAs (Furdies & Dawgs swam 6:55 lows & mids respectively behind our winning 6:54.94), and tops the Furds' formerly leading time of 7:01.22 from Art Adamson by a considerable margin!

I guess that answers my question on her prelim 100B time if that would be good enough qualifying for the NCAAs. Nope

Release: Saturday 12/06/2014

ATHENS, Ga. On another night of fast racing at the Georgia Fall Invitational, fifth-ranked California surged to the front of a highly competitive field behind six swims that reached the NCAA A qualifying standard Saturday. Leading the charge were Missy Franklin, who posted the top time in the country in the 200-yard freestyle; Celina Li, who held off four Georgia Bulldogs to win the 400 individual medley; and the victorious 800 free relay that became the first collegiate team to break 7 minutes this year.

Through two days of the three-day competition, Cal has 620 points, with No. 2 Georgia next with 587 and No. 9 Virginia third with 483. No. 6 Auburn (246), No. 15 Penn State (243), Florida State (158), Virginia Tech (92), No. 19 UCLA (69) and Harvard (48) round out the entries.

"I was really proud how we got after it in the morning prelims," head coach Teri McKeever said. "That set us up with 15 A finals swims. It's quite exciting and really a great atmosphere. I think the team is learning a lot. They're inspiring each other and are feeding off each other's energy. We just have to make sure we finish strong tomorrow."

Franklin, who set the American record in the 200 free on her way to the NCAA title last March, led from the start in Saturday's race and finished in 1:41.23 to begin a Cal sweep of the event. Elizabeth Pelton was next in 1:43.13 with Cierra Runge third in 1:44.12. Both Franklin and Pelton were below the A standard, and their times rank first and third in the country so far this year.

Li stood on the starting blocks of the 400 IM with four hometown Georgia swimmers also in the final. She built a slight lead following a strong breaststroke leg and held off the field for first place in 4:05.13, an NCAA A swim that was both a personal best and the second-fastest time in the nation this year. Georgia's Hali Flickinger was second in 4:05.16, with UGA's Amber McDermott third in 4:05.25, with Bulldog teammates fourth and fifth.

The Bears closed out the evening with first- and fourth-place finishes in the 800 free relay. The reigning NCAA champions in the event, Cal's A squad of Runge, Camille Cheng, Franklin and Pelton finished in 6:55.95, nearly seven seconds ahead of runner-up Georgia. In another show of the Bears' depth, Cal's B team of Catherine Breed, Caroline Piehl, Melanie Klaren and Rachael Acker took fourth in 7:08.75.

Cal started the finals' session with a runner-up showing in the 200 medley relay, coming in behind Virginia. Still, the foursome of Rachel Bootsma, Marina Garcia, Noemie Thomas and Farida Osman made the A standard with a time of 1:36.82.

Osman came back a short time later to claim second in the 100 butterfly in 51.92, with Thomas fourth in 52.21 and Kelly Naze seventh in 52.82. Naze was also seventh in the 400 IM. In the 100 fly B final, Bootsma won in 52.43 and Jasmine Mau was second in 53.00.

Garcia was Cal's lone finalist in the 100 breast, and she came through with a personal best of 1:01.26.

Virginia's Courtney Bartholomew won the 100 back, but Bears claimed the next four positions. Bootsma was second in 51.20 (also an NCAA A time), Franklin and Pelton tied for third in 51.85, and Klaren was fifth in 51.86. All of the Cal times rank among the top six in the NCAA so far this season.

Here's a thought. If Cal is able to dominate the 800 fr relay, would Teri ever consider taking Missy off that relay and putting her in another individual event in march?
Maybe risk getting 2nd or 3rd and get another 1-3rd place individual from Missy?

EDIT:
Wait is that even allowed? I know you can add a relay and take away the individual event. But can you take away a relay and add another individual event?

That would be a somewhat gutsy/risky strategy considering that 800 free relay title isn't guaranteed in spite of the really promising time our women pulled off yesterday (would need Missy's relay replacement to come up with a decent time, such as Caroline getting back to her 2013-2014 form), keeping in mind that relay points are worth double. However, could reap dividends if it panned out since Missy should have a great chance to claim Top 3 in a 4th individual event!

However, unfortunately isn't permitted under current NCAA regulations:

Farida, in my opinion, is the most underrated swimmer on this team. She finishes second in the 100 Free 47.93. Camille finishes in fifth, 48.76. It's interesting that Missy didn't swim the 100 Free at this meet. As of now, it looks like she will swim the 200 IM, 200 Free, and 200 Back at NCAAs. That is the exact same as Liz's normal three events. Maybe Liz does the 100 Back on day 2 instead of the 200 Free?

The winning men's 400 Fr relay got DQ'd and still won the meet.
The women's 400 Fr relay won but just lost the 1st place by 9 points.

Thought it was interesting that Josh Prenot swam the 200 Fly instead of the 200 Breast. Was kind of hoping for better times from Long Gutierrez, Ryan Kao, Janardan Burns, and Trent Williams.

Cheers again for all the stats updates and YESSSSSS!!!

I think the main reason why Missy didn't race the 100 free is cause of the 4 individual event limit for competitors here (and down to 3 @ NCAAs), so Teri & Kristen will have to fine-tune things a bit more before settling upon the best combo of swims for Missy in terms of maximizing the overall team scoring... Having that extra individual entry at the Invite would have been helpful for them to get an idea of how Missy will do in a Championship-like format meet in various events.

Liz & Missy's 200 back times (as well as Courtney's, to give fair credit) would have beaten 2014 NCAA champion Brooklyn Snodgrass' 1:50.52! Kelly about where she was at this time last year, Melanie slower than expected.

Agree about Farida's improvements & contributions being relatively unheralded, her up-surge thus far this season will be a key component to our fortunes in March.

Bootsie's looking better than last year, but still have a little ways to return to her stunning freshie form. If she can recapture that magic to complement Liz's rediscovered swag and Missy just being the Missy we all fell in love with, well then, with Marina hopefully accelerating her improvements and Acker/Piehl/Breed getting out of their current doldrums (knock on wood), then those darn dawgs & furdies had better watch out at the Championship!

Pretty good results for our Golden Bears. Looks like Teri already has 13 swimmers (5 via automatic A swims and 8 via high B swims) "invited" to NCAAs. Additionally 4 more Bears are just outside the bubble. Really good news is that all potential relay swimmers except Acker and perhaps Mau are in already.

A Cuts:

-Pelton (200 IM, 200 Free, 200 Back)
-Missy (200 IM, 200 Free, 200 Back)
-Runge (500 Free)
-Li (400 IM)
-Bootsma (100 Back)

High B cuts:

-Klaren (500 Free, 100 Back, 200 Back)
-Osman (50 Free, 100 Fly, 100 Free)
-Bing (50 Free)
-Naze (400 IM)
-Noemie (100 Fly, 200 Fly)
-Cheng (200 Free, 100 Free)
-Piehl (200 Free)
-Garcia (200 Breast)

Outside the Bubble:

-Acker (200 Free, 100 Free)
-Mau (100 Fly, 200 Fly, 100 Free (relay split))
-Breed (500 Free, 200 Free)
-Maija (200 Breast)

B times based om a SwimSwam analysis of last invited B times in 2014. Invited times will be faster in 2015, but it's a good first approximation. For some reason, having trouble with links from some sites. The reference and explanation is a SwimSwam article, "What Does It Take to Qualify for NCAAs..." by Troy Gennaro October 21, 2014. L'il help with the link would be appreciated.

Bing's the only swimmer who's just inside the bubble (22.35 vs 22.40). Mau and Acker are agonizingly close, but still outside. Don't think Teri's really nervous or she would have had those swimmers try to qualify via time trial or shifted them to leading off relays (like she did with Mau in the 400 free). Another crack at Pac-12s and then via time trial or last chance if needed. Looks like Breed was hurt since she didn't swim the 1650.

17 swimmers would be ideal since it leaves room for 2 divers if they qualify. Li can back up Garcia on the breast legs of relays and Teri might still bring Maija as a relay only swimmer if she doesn't get a 200 Breast invite.

In all four of our races, @epelton16 and I had a TOTAL of 2.19 seconds difference! Think we train together or nah? I'm so lucky that one of my closest competitors is also one of my closest friends. I'm so proud of all my bears and can't even put into words how inspired I was by them this weekend!

B times based om a SwimSwam analysis of last invited B times in 2014. Invited times will be faster in 2015, but it's a good first approximation.

Wow, BD, my hat's off to you for doing such a whopping job of analysis + detailed breakdown of where the women's team stands after this big mid-season meet, with regards to qualifying for March! :acclaim:

Just prior to your post, I had started looking at how they are doing relative to this reference point last season @ 2013 AT&T Winter Nationals. Made some headway w/Day 1 but can't seem to muster the energy/motivation to go on to Day 2 & 3 Anyway it was merely for fun, as I didn't dig deeper into cross-referencing with the last 2014 invited times like you had, nor take into account high vs mediocre B times, and whether swapping certain relay members from the B, C & even D teams may have shown up more promising relay times.

FWIW, here's what I had done for Day 1 at this point - note that anything in (parentheses) are for last year, green indicates a time drop from the 2013 mid-season meet which is always a positive sign, red denotes a slower time which isn't so great, and gray for when the swimmer in question didn't have data points for both the 2014 UGA Invite and for 2013 Winter Nationals. Sorry I didn't have the time to organize the layout & color scheme to render the info in a more legible & less confusing format

Release: Sunday 12/07/2014

ATHENS, Ga. Golden Bears Elizabeth Pelton and Missy Franklin swam to the top two times in the country so far this season in the 200-yard backstroke and fifth-ranked California posted another collection of impressive times on the final afternoon of the Georgia Fall Invitational Sunday.

Pelton, the American-record holder in the 200 back, and Franklin, who owns the world record at the 200-meter distance, waged a battle with Virginia's Courtney Bartholomew throughout their race. While Bartholomew held a short lead after 25 yards, Pelton went in front at the 50-yard mark and held on for win in 1:49.00, with Franklin right behind at 1:49.23 and Bartholomew in third at 1:49.94.

Despite being the runner-up to her training partner, Franklin completed the second-fastest 200-yard back in school history, trailing only Pelton's 2013 American record of 1:47.84.

In the 1650 freestyle, freshman Cierra Runge placed third in 15:57.70, which put her No. 2 on the all-time Cal list behind Lauren Boyle's 15:56.93 from 2009.

Farida Osman raced out to an early lead in the 100 free, but was edged out by 0.01 at the finish by Georgia's Olivia Smoliga, 47.92 to 47.93. Still, Osman recorded a personal best by nearly half a second. Senior Camille Cheng also had a PR time, touching in 48.76.

Marina Garcia also swam to a lifetime best in the 200 breaststroke, finishing third in 2:06.16 for the second-fastest time ever at Cal. Freshman Maija Roses was seventh in 2:13.49, which ranks 10th all-time at the school.

Freshman Noemie Thomas was third in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.63, a time that puts her fifth in the country and sixth in Cal history.

The Bears closed out the meet by taking first and third in the 400 free relay. Franklin, Cheng, Pelton and Osman were timed in 3:11.15 in the win, as Franklin's opening split of 47.63 would have won the 100 free and rates second in the nation this year. Jasmine Mau, Kaylin Bing, Rachel Bootsma and Rachael Acker were third in 3:14.42, which gave Cal two squads under the NCAA A qualifying standard.

The Bears, who did not bring their divers to the meet, were second to No. 2 Georgia, 916-907, in the final standings. Georgia received 52 points from its divers. In addition, No. 9 Virginia was third (748) and was followed by No. 6 Auburn (405), No. 15 Penn State (363), Florida State (214), Virginia Tech (169), No. 19 UCLA (84) and Harvard (62).

The Bears will be off from competition until after the New Year when their Pac-12 dual season begins. Cal will have home meets vs. USC Jan. 30, UCLA Jan. 31 and Stanford Feb. 14.

Thanks for the links, UAC. First link hasn't been updated yet. Second link has been updated through last weekend, but lists times for Missy and Osman from 2015.

College Swimming has updated YTD times which gives people an idea where swimmers currently sit in the pecking order toward NCAA invites.

Hmmm when I had looked at the "Season Best" list yesterday, it appeared to have been updated with the UGA Invite stats...maybe they are in the midst of making further changes/updates?

"All-Time Top 10" list - perhaps they are labelling times achieved in the 2014-2015 season to match the year of the championship (i.e. March 2015), to avoid confusion with last season's 2014 times (even though it's technically still 2014)?

Thanks for the College Swimming link. Yup, I was pleasantly surprised with their efficiency this time round re updating their results & times from all the meets that had concluded this weekend. That site's a really great resource & tool for comparing stats, when they keep it up-to-date that is hehe.

The one thing to be aware of is that for many of the listed events which are there, the top few entries frequently are from some "backwater" non-powerhouse collegiate swimming program with wonky times... For example in the 100 free they have a Jamie Schell from Bridgewater State as having been faster than Simone & Missy with her 38.58!!
