The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Team Rankings are compiled by nine CSCAA-member coaches and one media member. The rankings will be released on a weekly basis throughout the 2014-15 season, alternating weeks between a men’s and women’s team ranking.

The CSCAA DI Poll Committee will produce in-season rankings of the 25 best performing NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving teams in rank order at the time of each poll. The poll is not designed to predict the results of the NCAA Championship, but rather which teams would win head-to-head against other teams in the country. Ranking are based on performances that have taken place since the previous poll and include invites as well as dual meets.

Hmmm when I had looked at the "Season Best" list yesterday, it appeared to have been updated with the UGA Invite stats...maybe they are in the midst of making further changes/updates?

Season bests finally did get updated and it looks like Alicia Grima's also potentially in the mix to get an NCAA invite (200 IM). She's about 1.5 seconds off where she needs to be. The only potential downside is that she doesn't have any other B cuts, so she'd only be able to swim the 200 IM at NCAAs if she gets an invite. Maija's got slightly longer odds to get an invite in the 200 Breast, but she has two other B cuts (100 Breast and 200 IM) which she'd be able to swim at NCAAs plus would be a back up medley breaststroker.

Bears won't compete in racing suits again until Pac-12s, so it's extremely unlikely that anyone on the bubble gets in during Pac-12 dual season. Bing needs to improve her time to solidify her invite and is a key relay component. Acker and Mau are also in the relay mix, plus Acker is a returning individual scorer. Since the Bears are already in the top 3 in every relay, Teri can spend dual meet season mixing and matching 4 to 6 swimmers in various relays to find out her best combinations before Pac-12s. Would guess that Bears get 16 swimmers invited (Acker, Mau, Breed). Maija and/or Grima would be gravy.

There was speculation we might get another swimmer or 2, after semester but I believe one officially dropped off of that list. Is this still a possibility for the one and for the swim insiders, do you know who it might be but just can reveal until she is enrolled?

Story I heard was that the transfer was for non-swimming reasons. Not an impact swimmer and I haven't heard anything more, so it's probably not happening.

NCAA "A" Cut Update: 59 individuals qualified after December invites

http://swimswam.com/ncaa-a-cut-update-59-individuals-qualified-december-invites/

Cal's Liz Pelton (right) and Missy Franklin (center) lead the NCAA with 4 individual "A" cuts each, and Rachel Bootsma (left) is also qualified. Archive Photo via Tim Binning/TheSwimPictures.com

Individuals

As of December 15th, 59 different swimmers have qualified individually 32 women and 27 men.

That's just a tick behind the 65 athletes who had qualified by this time last year.

To qualify at this point, athletes must hit an NCAA "A" standard in at least one event. Any athlete who hits an "A" standard can swim that event at the national championships, plus any other events where they get to a "B" standard.

The California and Georgia women lead all programs with 5 individuals already qualified. Virginia sits at 3.

Missy Franklin - California: 100 free, 200 free, 200 back, 200 IM
Elizabeth Pelton - California: 200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM
Cierra Runge - California: 500 free
Rachel Bootsma - California: 100 back
Celina Li - California: 400 IM

Relays

The relay process is similar. The NCAA has "Qualifying Standards" (essentially "A" cuts for relays) and "Provisional Standards" (somewhat like "B" cuts).

Any team that hits a qualifying standard in any of the 5 relay events is eligible to enter all 5 relays at NCAAs. The catch is that the team must qualify at least one individual for the meet as well.

Once a team has at least one relay "A" cut and one individual qualified, the team can bring up to 3 "relay-only" swimmers along to NCAAs to fill out the relay races.

Here are the schools that have hit qualifying standards in a relay. We've italicized the programs that have to officially qualify an individual before they can swim at NCAAs:

Stanford: 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 medley, 400 medley
California: 200 free, 400 free, 800 free, 200 medley, 400 medley
Texas: 200 free, 400 free, 200 medley, 400 medley
Virginia: 200 free, 800 free, 200 medley, 400 medley
Georgia: 200 free, 400 free, 400 medley
Florida: 200 free, 400 free
Missouri: 200 free, 400 medley
Auburn: 200 free, 200 medley
Texas A&M: 400 free, 400 medley
Southern Cal: 200 medley, 400 medley
Wisconsin: 200 free
Kentucky: 800 free
Indiana: 800 free
Florida State: 200 medley
Michigan: 400 medley

Elizabeth Pelton and the Cal Bears impressed at the Georgia Invite last month. Was it enough to boost the Bears to the top spot? Current Photo via Tim Binning/TheSwimPictures.com

http://swimswam.com/2014-15-ncaa-womens-swimswam-power-rankings-post-invite-edition/

-----------

1. GEORGIA BULLDOGS (previous rank: #1)

No change at the top: the Bulldogs are just solid all around, with at least one top eight scoring threat in every individual event, minus the 100 breast. They're still loaded in the longer events, showing particularly exceptional depth in the 200 fly (three swimmers in the top seven nationally) and 400 IM (four in the top nine).

Georgia might not come close to winning a relay at NCAA's, but at we can't pass up picking the Bulldogs at the mid-season mark, especially with the emotional boost from head coach Jack Bauerle's return to deck.

2. CAL GOLDEN BEARS (Previous rank: #3)

No breaststroker? No problem. Farida Osman is light-years ahead of where she was a year ago, and Cierra Runge has been just as impressive short course as she was this summer. This is the best Elizabeth Pelton has looked in a while, too. And as for that breaststroker, Marina Garcia seems to finally be clicking a little in yards she swam lifetime bests in both the 100 yard breaststroke (1:01.26) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:09.16) at the Georgia Invite.

3. STANFORD CARDINAL (Previous rank: #2)

Stanford has had a break from competition since their impressive performance at the Art Adamson Invitational, so moving down a spot isn't a result of anything they did or didn't do. Cal just looked really good. At this point, the Cardinal have a couple more holes than their arch-rivals from across the Bay, lacking a true scoring threat in the IM's and distance freestyles. Simone Manuel, who is the most valuable swimmer in the country right now, can make up for a lot of weaknesses though.

4. TEXAS A&M AGGIES (Previous rank: #4)
5. TEXAS LONGHORNS (Previous rank: #5)
6. FLORIDA GATORS (Previous rank: #6)
7. USC TROJANS (Previous rank: #7)
8. VIRGINIA CAVALIERS/WAHOOS/CAVAHOOS (Previous rank: #9)
9. TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (Previous rank: #8)
10. ARIZONA WILDCATS (Previous rank: #10)

Pretty clear that the women's team is better positioned than the men's team right now, but I think that's largely by design. Defending champions rarely lack confidence and it looks like Teri, LSJU, and Texas rested their teams a lot more at their major mid-season invite meets than the Georgia women or Durden's boys. Think it's a three team race for the women and a two team race for the men. I'd feel a lot better about the Bears' chances on the women's' side if Jack Bauerle weren't back. Even though he wasn't allowed at meets second semester, he was on the pool deck at home every day calling the shots. He wasn't allowed to have any contact with the team until now and it looks like interim coach Harvey Humphries put more emphasis on the men's team than usual.

...

Do like Teri's approach a little better-lock down NCAA invites mid-season via rest/mini-taper and sort out individual event programs and relay combos during Pac-12 dual season. Almost all the key relay swimmers are safely into NCAAs already, although Bing, Acker, and Mau need to improve their times slightly at Pac-12s to avoid being on the wrong side of the bubble. Don't think Teri is conceding anything to Georgia, but potentially having Missy swim the 200 IM at NCAAs goes straight at LSJU's weakness in IMs.

Haven't seen Missy on campus other than at swim meets, but think it's pretty cool and speaks well of the Cal community that she can experience a mostly "normal" student life in Berkeley. Doesn't appear that there's non-stop Missy mania every time she goes out in public. Recall a similar feeling watching Aaron Rodgers calmly talking to J Torchio six feet away from me during the 2005 Spring football game a month before the NFL draft (when he was expected to be the first overall pick). Everyone but little kids asking for his autograph left a soon to be household name alone.

Couple of positive inferences to draw from the above tweets:

a) Missy is putting in some heavy winter training in readiness for her final year of competition as a :bear: - starting with the extra practices which taskmistress Teri had put all our Bears thru from after their finals thru just before Xmas Day (as reported by various of our Golden Bears), followed by a spot of tough altitude training back with Todd in CO the day after Christmas...

b) ... to be soon followed by the annual winter training trip in early Jan, presumably in Hawaii per tradition (an event which I know everyone looks forward to!) ☀️

The Florida women are now NCAA title contenders...but they may even be the favorites with their newest additions: http://swimswam.com/florida-newcomers-sophia-batchelor-amelia-maughan-eligible-compete-semester/

Cal transfer Sophia Batchelor is eligible to swim for Florida in the spring semester of 2015. Archive Photo via Tim Binning/TheSwimPictures.com

While Florida head coach Gregg Troy is declining to comment on whether newcomers Sophia Batchelor and Amelia Maughan will compete this weekend against Florida State, the two are both eligible to compete in the spring semester of 2015, according to a team spokesperson.

Whether those first races come this weekend or later in the semester, their additions at any time between now and March make the Florida women legitimate NCAA title contenders (though, they won't impact our power rankings until they've swum their first races).

The two join Theresa Michalak, who says she is swimming this weekend, in huge mid-year pickups for the Gators: http://swimswam.com/european-champion-michalak-make-first-career-appearance-florida-gators-friday/

Batchelor is a New Zealand native who is transferring to Florida after one season spent with the Cal Golden Bears. In her freshman season at Cal, Batchelor finished 16th at NCAA's in the 100 fly individually, 21st in the 200 back, and 17th in the 200 fly, while also splitting a 51.62 in the 100 fly in prelims of the 400 medley relay. That split was the fastest of any butterflier among teams who made the A-Final, though Batchelor was still replaced by Rachel Bootsma in finals.

The Florida 200 and 400 medley relays graduated both breaststroker Hilda Luthersdottir and butterflier Elise Zalewski off of last year's team, where both finished in the top 4 at NCAA's. Adding possibly Michalak, and almost definitely Batchelor, to those relays along with Sinead Russell on the backstroke allows sophomore star Natalie Hinds to remain on the Gators' freestyle leg. That's a relay that can once again contend with the likes of Tennessee, Cal, Stanford, and Georgia for the NCAA relay titles, and might even become a favorite depending on how well the international swimmers adapt to yards swimming.

The other addition, Maughan, is not yet as well known internationally as Batchelor and Michalak, but she's heading that way and is still a huge addition. She was a member of Team England at this summer's Commonwealth Games that included spots on both the 400 free relay that took silver (prelims swimmer) and the 800 free relay that took bronze (finals swimmer).

In long course, Maughan has best times of (converted times in parenthesis):
50 free 25.68 (22.4)
100 free 55.36 (48.4)
200 free 1:59.35 (1:44.6)

Those are all immediate-impact times, and she might just be the piece that Florida needs to get on top of the podium in March.

Florida didn't have a very big class of incoming American freshman this season, indicating that coach Troy might have something up his sleeve. Including transfers and redshirt freshmen, 7 out of 11 new competitors for the Gators are internationals (7 out of 8 if we exclude divers in the tally).

While Troy has been mum about when the influx of talent might officially begin competing, Batchelor was at home in New Zealand over the Christmas holiday.

-----------

Josh: "We know that Michalak is now eligible, but if Sophia Batchelor and Amelia Maughan (both of whom show up on the UF roster now) are eligible for SECs, they just filled every need that was keeping them from contending at NCAAs. Michalak is the top-flight breaststroker the medley relays needed in addition to being a :55/1:59 lc freestyler and a :59 lc flyer. She is a three-event scorer who can swim anything. Sophia Batchelor is the sprint flyer they were looking for to relieve Natalie Hinds so she can swim monster freestyle anchor splits, and Amelia Maughan (split sub-55 and 1:59 mid on relays for Great Britain this summer) gives them a freestyle weapon that can swim from the 50 to the 200 and bolster the relays. These are gamechanging additions."

Sparkle: "I'm puzzled as to why Florida should be considered title contenders after these additions. Florida was 6th last year, almost 300 points behind Georgia. They have a long way to go to win a NCAA title.

The addition of Michalak, Batchelor and Maugan will help fill the holes in Florida's lineup, especially having a sprint butterflier who isn't Natalie Hinds and freeing up Lindsey McKnight from breaststroke duty. But there's always uncertainty in bringing foreign swimmers in and just taking a straight conversion from their LCM to SCY times. The most recent example of this is Marina Garcia at Cal, who did not end up being the breaststroker that they needed for their medleys last season. Michalak will likely do well at NCAA's this year, given that she's been at Florida for a year now and swam well at German Nationals last month. But Batchelor has been at Cal all fall, and it's unclear if she's been swimming. If she hasn't, she's probably better off redshirting for the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see how Maugan transitions to SCY.

If anything, Florida mitigated the loss of Beisel and Zalewski with these pickups, and now has a shot at finishing in the Top 5 at NCAA's, but they would still need to get by Texas A&M or Texas to get there. This year is Georgia's to lose, with Cal and Stanford having an outside shot at taking the title if they swim a near perfect meet and Georgia stumbles."

5 Swimming Meets To Watch In 2015

Women's NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships

This meet will be noteworthy mostly because it will be Missy Franklin's final collegiate competition. When she made her verbal commitment to California-Berkeley, the five-time Olympic medalist stated that she would only compete as a collegiate swimmer for two years, then become a professional athlete. Though we're not sure what events she'll swim in Greensboro, it's bound to be a big sendoff.

It will also be the NCAA championship debut for Stanford sophomore Simone Manuel, who will be looking to regain the American record she lost to Abbey Weitzeil last month. If Franklin sticks with the 200 freestyle, Manuel is likely to be her biggest challenger. But Manuel is going to be the biggest name in the 50 and 100 freestyles, with 50 free reigning champion Olivia Smoliga and fast-improving Ivy Martin in the hunt.

FINA world championships

Several reigning world champions are in danger of losing their crowns this summer in Russia. It's safe to say that Katie Ledecky is safe in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles. If she races the 200 free, that could be four individual golds for her in a major international competition for the second year in a row.

The world has caught up to Missy Franklin in the backstrokes, and she'll have plenty of competition. Emily Seebohm is back on track, and Katinka Hosszu made big strides in the backstrokes this year. Barring another physical setback similar to her back muscle strain last summer, Franklin should be on target to defend her backstroke titles and give Ledecky a race in the 200 free.

While you might think that Cate Campbell is looking secure for a 100 free title, I feel that Simone Manuel might have something to say about that. Sarah Sjostrom is also rapidly improving in the sprint freestyles, while Cate's little sister Bronte might also surprise us with a big swim.

Batchelor may be a more ruthless hired gun that we thought. Not all of her Cal units are going to transfer directly to Florida, so she'd be better off redshirting the full season and getting Florida to pay for more of her education than swimming second semester after having zero high level training first semester this season. I get that she has realistic Olympic aspirations, but she's not going to make a huge income as a pro swimmer from a tiny country and getting her education paid for via swimming is the wiser/shrewder move for her own future. I may get on Teri occasionally for not building her team strokewise in a textbook manner, but props to her for not running off swimmers who add a lot to the team and community out of the pool even if they're not major scorers at Pac-12s or NCAAs.

Any idea why she left Cal? Is it because she was replaced in the 400MR on the fly leg by Bootsma, even though she had the fastest prelim leg? I'm guessing she chose to leave and wasn't forced out by coach Teri. By your statement above "ruthless hired gun" does it mean she wants to finish her education sooner than later? Kind of weird she left Cal, even though she was already on campus at the beginning of the school year ! Hope Bootsma gets back to her freshmen year. We really need her in the fly!

Think she's put way more emphasis on swimming than her education. Florida's not a terrible school by any means, but it's also not Cal. Think she'd be better served athletically and academically by redshirting the entire season and stretching out Florida's contribution toward her degree since she's unlikely to graduate in less than 4 years thanks to a transfer.

Have no insight into why she left, but can see cases for leaving on her own, Teri cutting her loose, or (most likely) something mutual in-between. Kinda think that Teri reduced her scholly based on results and Batchelor decided to bail since internationals aren't eligible for financial aid. Sophia was suspended briefly from the team as a freshman and Teri knew she still had Bootsma and Farida, was adding Noemie and Mau, and had a pretty good feeling she'd add McLaughlin. Teri wouldn't have given her a full release if they parted on terrible terms. Teri also has a decent working relationship with Florida's Gregg Troy and clearly Teri didn't totally trash Sophia to Troy. Definitely helps Florida, but find assertions that they're now a legitimate title contender absurd. They can move up into the top 4 or 5, but they're not passing Georgia, LSJU, or the Bears.

Could also be she likes the weather better, or because she has a friend from New Zealand who enrolled at Florida and is on the swim team. There are 4-5 New Zealand/Australia women on the roster. So maybe it's a combination of a lot of things as suggested in previous posts here.

Fun exercise but by no means an accurate predictor of NCAA scoring for a host of reasons - though I'll definitely take their mock scoring for the women (but not so much for the men lol):

COLORADO SPRINGS The NCAA championship season is fast approaching, but midseason invitationals certainly provided some projectability (via NCAA Swimming Midseason Mock Scoring) to how things are going to go in March. Once again, USA Swimming has provided Swimming World with an championship-style mock scoring of all times across the board so far.

USA Swimming does not account for diving, maximum event limits, roster limits, etc., so these numbers are not close to being the final projections come March. But, they are certainly something fun to chew on for entertainment purposes.

Teri would take 535 points in a heart beat. Of her three NCAA championship teams, all were above 400 points and the highest was 424. Roughly speaking, an A and B scorer in all 13 swimming events plus top 5 finishes in all 5 relays gets you around 430 points.

For a sports that's easily quantifiable, seems really strange that some of the swim websites are so quant challenged. Abbey's American record 100 free has been updated on college swimming, but she's still only 14th in the class of 2015, 5th in California?!?

SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA junior Elizabeth Pelton was named Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Month and UCLA's Maria Polyakova the Pac-12 Diver of the Month for December, the Conference office announced today.

Pelton (Towson, Md.), swam Cal to a second-place showing at the Georgia Invitational, Dec. 5-7, to vault the Golden Bears to No. 1 in the national rankings. The junior won two events in NCAA-leading times 200 back and 200 individual medley finished runner-up to teammate Missy Franklin in the 200 free, and tied for third in the 100 back. Her 200 free time (1:43.13) ranks third in the country. Additionally, Pelton swam anchor on Cal's winning 800 free relay, and the Bears' time of 6:55.95 leads the nation by more than five seconds.

This is the second-career Swimmer of the Month honor for Pelton and the 13th overall for California, the most of any Pac-12 school since the award's inception.

One can make credible cases for Abbey or Kathleen being the top ranked recruit in the class of the 2015. Do think that Ledecky is the best female swimmer in the world, but that Missy, Manuel, Abbey, and Baker will be better college swimmers, given the format and scoring.

Not yet reported/updated in the above Swimswam article, but I think Marina is the top seed in the 200m breast with the fastest time (2:28.76), ahead of Breeja Larson & Micah Lawrence. She looked good on the webcast, starting out strong and quickly widened the gap between her & the rest of the field in her heat.

These are only prelims, and competed in the long course pool...but still, pretty encouraged by Marina's showing thus far, along with Farida who made the A final of the 100m free...this all after having just flown back from Hawaii yesterday. Caitlin Leverenz also made the 200 breast A final I believe, but Katie McLaughlin will have to do a swim off to determine if she'll race the A or the B final of the 100m free. Katie will be contesting the 100m fly later on as well, alongside Noemie, Farida & Kathleen.

I'll miss the remainder of the morning heats, but look forward to catching the evening finals. Notable mention: Prenot & Seliskar getting the top seeds on the men's side of the 200m breast, Ryan 2nd fastest in the 100m free (Stubblefield & Adrian also into the A final). The men's team (along with Natalie) have just completed a fortnight's worth of altitude training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado, so am expecting some decent times from them. As BD had mentioned, perhaps several will be aiming for NCAA qualification via SCY time trials at some point during the meet...

Just a quick note on the results of Day 2.

Been commented upon a few times by several on this board about Farida's unsung but very encouraging & promising improvements...

Well perhaps she will now gain more deserved attention after winning the 50m free tonight, and in stylish fashion beating out a strong international field and finishing strong to overcome AVW's powerful start, the only swimmer to go under the 25 sec mark - her 24.92 being both a PB and an Egyptian National Record! :acclaim:

Katie McLaughlin also did well to take 3rd in the 200m free with a time of 1:59.70 (only the top 3 swimmers broke the 2 minute mark here), almost catching up to Megan Romano in the final lap (Katie M had the 2nd fastest final split), though as usual Ledecky stole the show with her dominant 1:56.16 which even Missy would be hard pressed to reproduce at this early stage of the long course season...

Women's 200m Free A Final
RACE VIDEO ==>

During her breast leg of the 400 IM, Caitlin Leverenz closed the gap rapidly on Katinka Hozzsu after being a considerable distance behind, to come in 2nd behind Elizabeth Beisel.

Guess this should be posted on the men's thread, but hats off to Josh Prenot who didn't fade on the final (free) leg after his expected strong breast leg to take the 400 IM title over Olympians Tyler Clary & Ryan Lochte! (Andrew Seliskar was 4th).

Also a shoutout to Ryan Murphy & Jacob Pebley for their 1-3 finish in the 200 back (Connor Green finished 8th in the A final).

--------

Forgot to mention that Noemie went 26.87 in the 50m free during prelims swimming butterfly. Also Natalie used her backstroke in the same prelims event to finish in a time of 27.44...she actually surfaced after the start ahead of the rest of the field in her heat thanks to her legendary underwater skills :p

Wow, that's a big hit. Comparable to the Bears losing Farida or Bing. Nice girl, PASA teammates with Cheng, Acker, and Grima. Maddy and Grima are very good friends. Engel hasn't impressed thus far, so Bears are now favorites in all three free relays at Pac-12s and NCAAs.

Did notice that Maddy hadn't appear in any of those LSJU OTC Training Camp photos over the winter break (though both alumnae Felicia Lee & Maya Dirado were on the trip), but didn't think anything of it at the time... Maddy's no longer listed on the roster, and won't be honored on their Senior Day this Sat:

"Senior Day: Saturday's meet against Southern California will be Stanford's "Senior Day." Cardinal juniors will introduce five seniors before their final home meet at Avery Aquatic Center. Swimmers Fiona Majeau, Katie Olsen, Haley Sims, Mackenzie Stein and diver Sloane Brazina will be honored at approximately 11:45 a.m."

According to this anonymous poster's comment on Swimswam (completely unsubstantiated, of course), "As someone close to the situation, please know that this was a case of a swimmer truly not enjoying the sport anymore. The timing is not ideal, but many of you know how hard it can be to swim for the wrong reasons or if your heart isn't in it anymore."

Well whatever the reason, do wish Maddy the best for her future. She's good friends with quite a few :bear:s, as can be seen here:
