Please add new deaths here.

It will be a better tribute to them over the year to be able to review, having them consolidated.
If a period of time goes by and there are no new deaths, this thread will fall down the list. A new death? Then add it here and it will pop back up to the top.

This will also clean up the OT board a smidge.
Thank you.

Here's your 2021 list so far, for starters.

George Schultz died today.

He had a PHD in economics from MIT, and to my surprise spent most his private sector life in academia, as a econ professor and then Dean of a UofChicago Business school. He was tapped for a job in the Eisenhower administration. As Secretary of Labor he imposed the first federal racial quota requiring black workers on construction projects. He the held positions in the Nixon and Reagan administrations for which he is better know, but did have short periods of employment at private companies like Bechtel, where he ultimately became CEO. He also was associated with various think tanks like the Hoover Tower folks.

He clearly was a Washington insider, and was known for such diverse policies at shuttle diplomacy, preventive war, ending the war on drugs (which never gained traction), the Nuclear Threat Initiative (banning nukes), and an early advocate in the fight against global warming (Buffet and Schultz proposed the carbon tax, which Gore championed, and which also gained no traction).

He was more recently involved in the Theranos scandal, where his grandson was a whistleblower. Schultz, a then Theranos Board member, initially counseled his grandson not to go to the media out of concerns for his grandson's career, but the grandson did follow his advise. The grandson was sued by Theranos for violating his NDA. Shultz subsequently praised his grandson publicly and issued an apology.

Shultz was a man of many accomplishments, who also was a controversial figure, with varying interests and views.

Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas) died Sunday after battling COVID-19, his family confirmed to The Dallas Morning News on Monday.
Wright, 67, tested positive for COVID-19 in late January. He said in a statement at the time that he was experiencing "minor symptoms."
The Texas Republican was also diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018, and was admitted to a Dallas hospital in September 2020 due to complications from his treatment.
"As friends, family, and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end," the congressman's office said in a statement. "Despite years of painful, sometimes debilitating treatment for cancer, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him, or to offer fatherly advice."

The statement notes that Wright's wife, Susan, was hospitalized with COVID-19 two weeks ago.
Wright is the first sitting member of Congress to die after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Rep.-elect Luke Letlow (R-La.), 41, died of the disease in late December, days before he was set to be sworn in.
Wright was reelected to his seat in November 2020.

NEAR death:

British boy wakes from nearly year-long coma unaware of COVID pandemic

NOTTINGHAM, England (Reuters) - A British teenager is slowly emerging from a coma nearly a year after being hit by a car, and he has no knowledge of the coronavirus pandemic even though he has caught the virus twice.
Joseph Flavill, 19, suffered a traumatic brain injury when he was hit by the car in the central English town of Burton-on-Trent on March 1 last year, about three weeks before a first national lockdown was imposed to curb the spread of the virus.
During that time his family has been largely unable to be near him and hold his hand due to coronavirus restrictions, mostly trying to communicate with him via video link.
"Recently Joseph has started to show small signs of recovery, which we are thrilled about... We know now he can hear us, he responds to small commands," his aunt, Sally Flavill, told Reuters.
"When we say to him 'Joseph, we can't be with you, but you are safe, this is not going to be forever', he understands, he hears you, he just can't communicate," she said, adding that he now signalled 'yes' with a blink and 'no' with two blinks.
Since Joseph's accident, Britain has registered nearly four million COVID-19 cases, including more than 110,000 deaths, in a pandemic that has turned life upside down worldwide, shuttering schools, universities, shops and many other places.
"I don't know how Joseph will ever understand our stories of this lockdown," his aunt said, adding that he was still very ill and faced a "very, very long journey" back to some kind of normal life.
Joseph, who before the accident was a keen sportsman, is now receiving treatment at a care centre in Stoke-on-Trent, central England, and his family has started a fund-raising campaign https://www.josephsjourney.co.uk to help support his long-term recovery.

Charles Robinson and Terez Paylor host what has become the only NFL podcast I regularly listen to, the Yahoo Sports NFL podcast.

Yesterday, I listened to most of their post-Super Bowl recap. This morning I listened to the last remaining minutes.

This afternoon, I find out that Terez Paylor has died at age 37.

He also just voted in the Hall of Fame over the weekend.

Do me a favor: Give it a listen. He was a great, insightful, well-connected dude, especially when it came to QBs.

Damn......A lot of sports writers are dying like crazy.
