The ink is barely dry on Zagallo's obituary, and another giant falls, the Kaiser, Franz Beckenbauer, the greatest German athlete ever. As mentioned above, Beckenbauer is one of only 3 footballers to win the world cup as a player and a manager.

Beckenbauer modernized the game of football creating the position of libero, or roaming central defender. He also turned Bayern Munich into the greatest club in Germany and one of the top 5 in the world, here he is with the club's trophy case:

RIP.

With all due respect to Franz Beckenbauer, when I think of "the greatest German athlete ever", I think of Hartmut Ortmann.

Boy, I haven't heard that in a long time.
I wonder if it might be the last I ever heard it.

Some day I'll do a deep dive into all the music of the 60s whose songs I've heard but whose artists I haven't heard ... until they die.

I was a bit too young to know many artists in the 60s but I heard a lot of songs because I have two older sisters who both played a lot of music. They are both Cal grads, btw.

A large proportion of the better pop music was done between 1965-71, and not just by the headliners but by artists who never got much notoriety.

No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart during December 1971 and January 1972. My senior year in high school. AM radio played the sh@it out of that song to the point you never forgot it. Yes, it helped thinking about how pretty she was in conjunction with those lyrics.

I'm pretty sure when I heard 'the **** out of this song' I was too young to think that she wasn't singing about rollerskate keys. And since I only heard that song on the radio I had no idea how cute she was. Youth is wasted on the young. And now I'm too old and too married to be playing with 'rollerskate keys'.

The actual definition:

skate key (plural skate keys) A small wrench used to adjust old-fashioned roller skates of the kind that were fitted to the wearer's shoes. A small, sometimes key-shaped wrench used to adjust skateboards.

It had sexual connotations in the song although the author, Melanie, denied this.

Lyric:

Well, I've got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You've got a brand-new key
I think that we should get together
And try them on to see
I've been looking around a while
You've got something for me
Oh, I've got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You've got a brand-new key

I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller-skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you've got something I need

I ride my bike, I roller-skate, don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I've been all around the world
Some people say I've done alright for a girl

*She could deny it all she wanted. Good luck.

I posted this in a Goff thread. It will be of great interest to any old guy that was into KSAN No Jive 95 FM in late 1960's and early 70's.

There is evidence of SARS-CoV2 having been around several months before the Wuhan lab outbreak, both in Europe and in the US. Gain of function research on the coronavirus has been conducted in several other labs around the world, not just in Wuhan.

The fact that a dude in such excellent physical condition most of his life died at 76 scares the crap out of me.

….but if you factor in that he played a decent amount of football growing up (high school, college and 21 pro games NFL/CFL) and probably took more than a few cycles of roids for football/his movie roles, one could argue he had a decent run.

Don Murray dies at age 94

https://mol.im/a/13039697

* I was in a movie with him in 1980. I had an uncredited non speaking role as an FBI agent that rescued Richard Crenna's character's daughter (played by Robin Dearden, now Mrs. Bryan Cranston) in the final scene. Filmed in Napa.

Fugitive Family (TV Movie 1980) - IMDb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080767/

*Based on the game 6 Degrees from Kevin Bacon, I am 2 degrees from Marilyn Monroe, 2 degrees from Walter White aka Heisenberg, 2 Degrees from Steve McQueen (Crenna was in Sand Pebbles; Don Murray was in Baby the Rain Must Fall), and 2 degrees from Clint Eastwood (and every other major star of old Hollywood because of Eli Wallach of Tuco fame in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly).

*I wanted to tell Don how much I dug his TV series, The Outcasts, but I never got to speak to him. I did speak to Robin Dearden and Ronny Cox. Ronny told me that he had recently filmed a movie, The Onion Field, and that Jimmy Woods was scary crazy great in it.

I thought 76 WAS a decent run - regardless!

I have been counting high school friends who've been dying, and we're just mid-50's.
Another called me today to tell me his liver disease has been upgraded to Stage 3.

Prepare to meet your makers!
