What will SF look like in 75 more years, and what will they say about our city then?

Nope, Donald Sutherland will probably be dead in 75 years.
So will Keifer - and his daughter, Sarah Jude Sutherland (34).

Keifer's a pretty popular beverage. It may still be around in 75 years.

Gorbachev was arguably the most hated leader in his country, though a bit less than Yeltsin.

On a lighter note:

Gorbachev was faced with an almost impossible task. On the other hand, what else could they do, stay as the Soviet Union? That thing had to crumble, at one point or another. Same with their "communist" command economy.

Gorbachev probably had the right intention but was very naive and poorly suited for the task of transitioning his country away from communism towards a mixed economy. China did pull it off with flying colors.

I thought they snuffed him at the end of The Hunger Games movies.

I watched some of the filming of that version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers from the balcony off the library when I was at Hastings.

I thought it was a fine film. It conveyed a sense of utter hopelessness, like the book and film, 1984.

War of the Worlds had that vibe….until the happy ending (no, not that kind).

Good example. China did it with intent. For Gorbachev, it was like riding a rodeo bull, without even knowing in advance that he was going to have to ride it.

It will be interesting to see how China fares, over the next decades. Just from my perspective as an American, I have a hard time imagining the Chinese people won't be craving more freedom. No economic or political system is ideal.

Maybe they are trained to be watched, controlled.
Americans historically had wide open land, ultimate freedom.

Body snatchers
Dawn of the dead
Damian Omen…

I watched too many horror films at too young an age.

At least the first one had some intelligentsia about it.

Certainly. That's why Russia has had such a hard time establishing a democracy. They have been trained over centuries to live under autocratic rule.

But with the internet being like it is nowadays, people can start getting ideas...

In terms of individual freedoms, China is roughly where Taiwan, S. Korea were in the 1970s, when these countries were still quite authoritarian 2 decades after their modern industrialization process. There are still some aspects about those countries that seem excessively authoritarian from a western perspective, for example in Japan the conviction rate of suspects is 99.8%, and I believe S Korea is similar. Basically eastern societies place more value on social harmony and the collective than on individual liberties.

Most Chinese people are very satisfied with their government, and understand that they are trading some individual freedoms in exchange for political, social stability and very high economic growth. The purchasing power of the average eastern big city worker in China has grown nearly tenfold in the last two decades.

C'mon, ConcordTom, enough with the false modesty: You created the "Obituaries" thread! Why, this achievement will be part of your own obituary!

I considered it bullying. I posted the most frequent R.I.P. threads since I know of all the old guys dropping.

When Tom ordered:

" Please add new deaths here.

It will be a better tribute to them over the year to be able to review, having them consolidated."

It intimidated me, and I have been an obedient dog ever since.

Okay, okay, that was funny.

Here lies ConcordTom.
1968 -
Beloved husband and father.

Among his greatest achievements were attending The Play in 1982, coaching a bunch of girls youth soccer teams, and starting an obituaries thread on an obscure Off Topic blog populated by a bunch of old men who attended the same college as his parents and grandparents, which may or may not say something about the deceased.

Indeed, he was a devoted addicted commentator at BearInsider.com, although he had a distinctly few number of fans.

His children were all gathered at his bedside when he passed, and reported his last words as being "My password to BearInsider is (redacted). Please go on there and tell everyone I'm gone, and that appreciate them putting up with me. Also remind them that I strongly opposed Shocky1's antics and am glad he's gone. The Bear will never quit, the Bear will never die. But, I am not a Bear."

And with that, he died.

His children were left with,
"WTef was that? Bear insider? Shocky? The Bear will not quit?
Who WAS our father??? What does it all mean?

According to a note left in his desk drawer, where there were NO top secret folders, Tom requested to be buried on his back with his iPhone on his lap and a usb-c charger connection live so that he might be able to continue posting from the after world. He wrote that he would like to rejoin the Football Growls board when Cal makes another Rose Bowl, and the Hoops board when Cal make March Madness again. And when Baron Trump dies - he had always wanted to see what happened to that kid, produced from two weird ass people - a must-discuss life retrospective.

Pretty funny post Tom, though a bit bittersweet because it reminded me of some of the great posters we've lost over the quarter century or so since this board was set up, including Greybear and Gary Moore aka Goldnbear71...

Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96.

On Tuesday, the queen fulfilled her final official engagement as she swore in Liz Truss as prime minister the 15th prime minister in her 70-year-long reign. It was the first time the handover took place at Balmoral and not the queen's official residence of Buckingham Palace, as the queen moved to her retreat in Aberdeenshire during the summer due to ongoing mobility issues.

Upon the announcement, Prince Charles, the former Prince of Wales, has immediately become king. His title will be passed down to his son Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. However, Charles won't be officially named until Friday one day after the death of the monarch.

No video of the Truss swearing in, just stills - the last we ever got to see her. Up and walking two days ago, now dead. Hmmm. Stroke? Heart? Must be.

When somebody is that old, speculation about the cause of death seems pointless. Glad to see your buddy "President" Trump horn in with his "official" statement and condolences. I guess he must be the real President* after all!

Well, I don't think it's pointless to speculate. It's not like I'm suggesting an assassination.

I mean, it wasn't flu or Covid, per the photo. It wasn't cancer or some other disease ravaging her body.
She didn't experience Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. Wasn't senile.

As we all get older, and see others around us dying, don't we all consider these things?

I've learned a lot about death and dying in the past 5 years….

And yes, Trump is a terrible piece of crap.
Can't wait to add him to these pages.

Liz Truss, the Queen's final prime minister, born in 1975.

Winston Churchill, the Queen's first prime minister, born in 1874.

(A random thing I just learned: Herbert Hoover was born 3 months before Winston Churchill. Churchill died 3 months after Hoover died.)

I'm surprised (shocked) Elton elected to insult the queen and allowed the others to make fun of his solemn song for Diana.

That should get him banished from buckingham, incredibly disrespectful!!!

He should have told the writers to FO.

….that last one with Martin Short was pretty good, as was Pippa. Good song.

Ivana Trump's final resting place is a cemetery at Trump's Golf Club

If your tee shot hits the Women's red tee marker and ricochets into the family plot, is it out of bounds or are you still in play?

If still in play and you land on Ivana's grave marker, do you get nearest point of relief plus a club length?

If so, it looks like a 3 wood will be required.

If Trump were smarter, this is where he could've hid the classified/secret documents he took with him. Instead, he puts them in his basement.

Wait a second... Trump isn't smart like, say, a Cal professor is smart, but he certainly has a "crafty intelligence": What's he got under that freshly turned earth?!? Maybe that's where he's keeping the good s***!
