Here's hoping concordtom doesn't go ballistic: Lou Campanelli's passing first reported on BI on the "men's basketball" forum, not on this thread, which was started specifically for sad events of this nature.

RIP Lou.

Ohhhhh, nooooo,
…… that hurts that I'm laughing about your post about Lou's death.
I briefly played hoops with his son Kyle at ClubSport in WC.
Thanks for sharing! Sad. Condolences.

You and I both grew up (well, me only 5 years) in Oakland, back in the day when you could say "s*ck my d*ck, b*tch" to another guy and not have people think you were gay.

Saw two new posts on this thread, so I thought I'd check to see if I was still alive.
So far, so good, but I'm living on borrowed time.

I had no idea who you were referring to. Clearly not BB King, who died some years ago.

"The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson wrote on Twitter: "I'm so sad to hear about Burt Bacharach. Burt was a hero of mine and very influential on my work. He was a giant in the music business. His songs will live forever."

In his tribute, the Kinks' Dave Davies described Bacharach as "a great inspiration" and "one of the most influential songwriters of our time." Gilbert O'Sullivan tweeted that Bacharach was a "huge influence" on his songwriting career and created "timeless melodies never to be forgotten."

"After he and Stewart divorced in 1958, Bacharach married three more times, to Angie Dickinson in 1965…."

Before we Boomers became too cool for AM radio, we probably listened to more Burt Bachrach tunes than anything else but didn't know it because they were sung by so many different artists. Even this morning as I was looking at a couple of Bachrach tributes on websites, I saw a couple of songs and thought, "I didn't know he wrote that!" Example: "Little Red Book" which was a 1965 hit for Manfred Mann. Who knew that?

This Herb Alpert cover of Burt's song was a huge hit in June,1968. At an 8th grade graduation party at a classmate's house, it was the big make out song during slow dancing.

A lot of guy's in my class flunked and were 15. I started young and was 13. I just remember feeling like a dork and jealous at the same time watchin' them takin' care of business.

…but even as an 11 year old, I was quite taken by this iconic Herb Alpert album cover:

My dad had that album in his collection, too. It made me uncomfortable, like he was a pervert - I suppose because he also kept playboys under the bed - but perhaps also because I was intrigued, too.

Taking care of business means laying pipe, not making out, and if you were watching your peers take care of business, then you're the pervert, no?

I mean, come on, how many people have ever watched others have sex (in person, not on screen)? I certainly haven't. But hey, I'm the guy who's been questioned as having "lived a sheltered life" because I didn't know "what's old and wrinkled and smells like ginger."

I did, in a tree fort that my best friend and I built on the fence of his parents house at the end of our cul-de-sac. We were 12 and his sister Monica was 14 and a guy down the street (who was about 16) was banging her in our tree fort. You can see an awful lot through a knothole.

I was 7 years old and in first grade when this picture was taken.
I started playing trumpet in 4th grade and eventually became quite good at it.
Even had the Doc Severinsen trumpet made by Getzen!

Doc Severinsen: Still going strong at 95! Ya gotta be something to make this thread while you're still kicking! Great, great all-around trumpet player. Just recently stopped performing in public.

Do you like Miles Davis' work? He is my favorite. 1950's to mid 60's. He lost me at B@itches Brew.

They say Louis Armstrong was # 1.

Cicely Tyson's autobiography has a lot of insight into Miles Davis. He was a tortured soul.

Personally, I have never gotten around to listening to a lot of Miles Davis, which I admit is my loss. Still plan to, though!

In terms of appreciating what somebody can do, I got to hand it to Wynton Marsalis, who was a world class classical virtuoso and also is a world class jazz improvisation / jazz combo guy.

If you knew the world was ending in a On the Beach scenario tomorrow, listening to this album as many times as you could before your incineration is all you would ever need to know about music, Jazz, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Duane Allman played the grooves of this album.

Ha ha. Wow, that's pretty damn young.
For them.
Of course, as 12 year olds you're completely excused. In fact, that sounds like a classic scene in a classic film. Have I seen it? Please tell me everything turned out okay for the 14 year old girl.

Come to think of it…. My youngest is 14, 8th grade, and my older brother was in 8th grade when he…. So, yeah…

You know, I once worked with a woman who was 33 and she had a 2 year old grandson! She was 13, and her daughter was a mother at 18.

Remember the recent story about my youngest half sister, whose father was 65 and mother (mine too) was 44? That's the opposite side of the spectrum!

excellent!
I actually had to driven 300 miles today and so I played the entire whipped cream album. My 14 year old is thinking about hs band with sister next year and maybe trumpet. I told her I'd learn with her if she wanted and we could play some of these tunes. I had to explain away the album cover when it popped up on the car's display (Spotify-Apple CarPlay) -yikes! I had to laugh because of our conversations.

Thx for the links about the album cover, I'm going to read now.

Alpert's two best songs:

Highway 101, I thought this cover was fun:

Rise

And let's give a nod to trumpeter Chuck Mangione, who came to mind today after all that hornage.

Big C
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Mangione is playing the flugelhorn there, on Feels So Good, which is the instrument he is famous for. Still, it is like a trumpet only bigger and I'm guessing every flugelhorn player is also a trumpeter.

"TMI", right? Anyway, I'm glad these guys are still alive, what with getting mentioned on the famous "Obituaries" thread!
concordtom
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not at all.
Thank you for the add. I saw it was larger than a trumpet and so knew it was a variant instrument, but didn't know which it was.
And, you are correct to add that just because Chuck was mentioned here, it didn't mean he was dead.

Always positive stuff from you.
