Norfolk Island in the Pacific, is an Australian territory with a population of around 2,000 people, received more severe tariff treatment. The Trump administration, in its calculation, said the former British penal colony charges the United States 58% tariffs and it responded with a tariff rate of 29% on Norfolk Island, whose economy revolves around tourism. It's about 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) east of Sydney, or the middle of the ocean .
Norfolk Island Administrator George Plant, the Australian government's representative on the island, was looking into what was behind it. "To my knowledge, we do not export anything to the United States," he told the AP. "We don't charge tariffs on anything. I can't think of any non-tariff barriers that would be in place either, so we're scratching our heads here."

10 years ago, a customer of mine asked for an American made brand. We stocked about 100 brands in a 50,000 square foot warehouse. Only one brand was still made in America, despite more than half of them being American brands. While Trump certainly acts like a crazy guy wielding a hammer, I do feel some manufacturing should come home. I also don't like that China steals IP when we make product there. I am not sure the answer, and I certainly hope we don't drop VTI much more than the 9% we have YTD.

I want to give one "real world" example of why this is SO stupid. I work adjacent to commercial real estate. Right now in our market vacancy rates for industrial/distribution is running about 7%. That isn't abnormal for anyplace with a decent economy and where on-shorting makes the most sense (talent, capital, proximity to logistical infrastructure, etc.). Some markets (inland empire) are softer but that is because the huge distribution buildings are hurting and overbuilt and are unlikely to be turn key candidates for manufacturing.
So this begs the question - if the tariffs are going to lead to a wave of onshoring where do we find the space? Likewise, skill manufacturing technicians and others that support modern manufacturing are in short supply. Who is going to fill those jobs.
There is an argument (a decent one) that our relationship with CHINA needed to be rethought. Good data is emerging that allowing them into the WTO was a mistake. But the current policies are insanity and going to do nothing more than drive demand over a cliff. Then we WILL have space in my market but no one to fill them as tthe demand destruction on the consumer side is going to be epic.
Still kicking myself I didn't do the smart thing and put my entire portfolio into cash. I got too exuberant when they killed Matt geatz - not realizing that this was because he was an *******, not because they actually believed that crackpot arsonists are bad.
Will most of them see stability in the current administration's approach? I don't think so.

Based on your post, I thought this relevant.
Dave (I know him!) is right about the big distribution places ((think inland empire million square feet buildings). But if you dive into properties that are 50,000 to 200,000 sqf the inventory is so tight. Plus Dave has a vested interest in always talking down the position of landlords - he is a tenant rep guy.

They almost certainly just had ChatGPT just pull a list of ISO country codes and formed the list based on that. I guess they were aware enough to take US territories like Puerto Rico and Guam off the list but left a whole lot of other dependent territories on there. Because they don't know what they're doing.oh my fucking god https://t.co/AAE0sN1JIM pic.twitter.com/HryXr6aXO6

I guess you don't understand how manufacturing competition works.
Please do me a favor and look up average wages of various countries and report back to me.
It's a "feeling" that you have about how some manufacturing should come back. Which sectors or industries? How much do you wish to pay for in order to say, "we have 3 American brands to choose from".
The utterly stupid aspect of these tariffs is they are short term.
They won't have the desired result because nobody is going to set up shop here knowing they will soon be reversed.
Unless USA is going to go full protectionism is a radical departure from who we've been.
But we're not going to and the tariffs won't last. Because there is no national consensus for them. He didn't convince Americans that we need them. His party doesn't support them. It's just his own "feeling" about the issue, which has come out of left field.
Just wait it out 4 years.
Unless he also goes full dictatorship.

Trump's tariff policy is a sledgehammer but it's purpose is not to be used permanently, it's to initiate bilateral negotiations. He's going to force nations to begin negotiations because of tariffs. Put it this way, if he did nothing, nothing would change. If you're a country ripping off the US, you would rather like that to continue happening.

I actually agree with this. There is merit to the idea that the US needed to be more aggressive about targeting certain countries or industries with tariffs (China, for example).Pocahontas Says Yes said:
Note that Trump and tariffs is like a 3 year old that finds his father's gun and wants to play with it. His tariff "strategy", such as it is, is not at all well thought out and probably will fail spectacularly. However, the idea of taking away the benefit of cheap overseas labor, either permanently or as a negotiating ploy to encourage companies to do some of their manufacturing with American labor (rather than using cheaper foreign labor and then shipping product overseas) is not without merit. If tariffs were always bad, the rest of the world wouldn't use them.

Trump has finally gotten his supporters to adopt his 10 year old boy strategy of accusing others of engaging in misconduct to distract them from figuring out is the precise conduct he is engaging in (projection).
This strategy is being used right now in North Carolina to set aside the election for state Supreme Court justice position won by a Democrat. "Elections" will become as meaningless in America as they are in Russia.
New court decision in a disputed North Carolina race means 65,000 votes are a step closer to be being thrown out

" The one Democratic judge involved in the state Court of Appeals' decision said the majority's ruling amounted to "changing the rules by which these lawful voters took part in our electoral process after the election to discard their otherwise valid votes" and called the majority's ruling an "an attempt to alter the outcome of only one race among many on the ballot is directly counter to law, equity, and the Constitution."
