For the record, I regret my (small) part in turning the last good thread on this forum into a **** show.

Maybe -- just maybe -- the mod(s) will notice that posters referred to others' comments as being dumb, not the posters themselves. Because that is our only hope.

If this thread survives through July 6th (and even if it doesn't) I would like to say that I hope the USA destroys Belgium (along with its waffles and chocolates). Belgium is a made-up country that somebody, somewhere invented to represent "generic Europeans"...

... Sorry, but I prefer real European countries like England, France, Italy, Germany and their pissant neighbors (Lichtenstein, anyone?). Not stupid Belgium. And if the mods don't like me insulting fake-ass Belgium, they can ban me, because I am an American patriot and we're going to trounce those wimpy little socialists tomorrow!

The only reason that Belgium even exists was to make a non-threatening pathway for the Germans to get to France in WWs I and II.

Who knows this one? A priest, a rabbi and a Belgian walk into a bar. The bartender says, "What'll it be, gents?" (Gotta stop there because posting the rest will get me in trouble... )

An Italian, a Dutchman and a Belgian are all in a lifeboat in the North Sea... Ooh, that one would make a sailor blush; I better stop! Maybe someone else can help me denigrate Belgium and the Belgians!

Someone? Anyone?

And it's been reported that it had no impact and still none of this shows that Trump said it was because of him. Still waiting for you to prove your claim.

Bingo.

Who is reporting Trump's call to his admirer had no impact on the reversal of the suspension?

The circumstancial evidence supports but one conclusion: The only reason the suspension was reversed was Trump leaned on Gianni Infantino……and everyone knows that.

I hope he called. What's the use of a President otherwise?

One day out of a thousand where I disagree with most of your posts... and I guess that day is today.

What's the use of a President?!?

+ keep the reflecting pool crystal clear
+ issue random tariffs to keep other countries on their toes
+ discourage scary-looking NBA players from visiting the White House
+ initiate regime changes across continents
+ motivate reporters to lose weight
+ keep Netanyahu in office and placated

I could go on, but the point is, it takes a leader at the top -- one with a diverse skill set -- to keep this country moving!

If Trump can get the US into the elite 8, start chipping away at Mt Rushmore

England-Norway looks like a tossup. Argentina, likely winner against Egypt, will be favored against the winner.

He couldn't help himself and put his chubby thumb on the scale, called the head of FIFA and got a red card lifted. This will taint the U.S. national team's run in the World Cup going forward. Will the team's hard work be celebrated or will this World Cup be remembered for US presidential interference?

As a non-TDS afflicted soccer fan, I am glad our president made the call asking for the red card to be reviewed. The card should never have been called based solely on slow mo and still images that made the incident look way worse than it was, which is illegal VAR procedure by FIFA rules. Hopefully, others can also look past their bias and see the facts for what they are.

FYI - Governments have been strictly prohibited from directly interfering with FIFA on things like referee decisions, with penalties being dished out to soccer federations whose government interfered.

AI Overview

Under FIFA Statutes, national governments are strictly prohibited from directly interfering in the internal operations, elections, or disciplinary decisions of football associations. Member states that violate this rule face immediate penalties, including bans on national teams and club participation in all international competitions. [1, 2]

Enforcement of the Rule
FIFA requires all member associations to manage their affairs independently and without political influence (Articles 2(2) and 15(c)). If a government dissolves a federation board, attempts a hostile takeover, or overrides refereeing decisions, FIFA regularly steps in to suspend the offending country. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Nations that have historically faced World Cup or international bans due to political meddling include: [1]
  • Nepal (Suspended over government interference in the football federation)
  • Pakistan and Chad (Banned for government interference and hostile takeovers)
  • Mali (Suspended after its sports minister dissolved the executive committee of the national federation)
  • Kenya (Suspended by FIFA when the government dissolved the football federation board)
  • Kuwait, Indonesia, Iraq, and Nigeria (All previously sanctioned for government attempts to control or dissolve their football associations) [1, 2, 3, 4]
Recent Controversies
While FIFA enforces these guidelines globally, the strictness of the rule occasionally sparks controversy. High-profile interventionssuch as when the White House directly lobbied FIFA to suspend an automatic red-card ban for U.S. striker Folarin Balogunhave led to accusations of political favoritism and inconsistency in how FIFA applies its disciplinary rules. [1, 2, 3, 4]

"I think it would have had a big stain, and I relayed just that feeling. I didn't tell him what to do. I can't tell him what to do, but, and I don't believe he made the decision."

"I think it was a committee that made the decision. And they made the right decision"

If Trump actually did directly intervene to get FIFA to reverse the suspension, none of the parties involved are actually going to say he did. From what I've seen of current reporting, they are saying that Trump called the FIFA president to say they should look into this Balogun matter and they said their committee already was. Is it true that this was his only involvement? I don't know.

FIFA has no real claim to integrity here, of course, but I don't know how you can claim that this reversal was bad but also the original issuing of the red card was completely above board and should stand.

I haven't seen them repeatedly make a statement, forget what they said, and then petulantly argue something else and never acknowledge the statement they made because they appear incapable of admitting they are wrong and then taking zero ownership of their own major role in disrupting community discussions. This is pretty interesting, if one wants to get into technical details of VAR.

I think it's a HUGE improvement, because there have been some OUTRAGEOUS refereeing gaffes over the years (eg: Maradona hand of God, Thierry Henry hand goal that eliminated Ireland), but this addresses how fractions that can never be perfectly adjudicated will exist.

It's too bad that there are fellow Cal Bears here that repeatedly make things up and harass other posters and spend a considerable amount of time baiting them into suspensions - - - while erroneously claiming that they engaged in a specific behavior that never got them suspended in the first place.

Moreover, why anyone would believe that a Cal alum here would donate considerable amounts of money to CAL NIL because he got "bullied" into doing so by a total stranger, is beyond all rational common sense.

But then again, there are people out there that are addicted to DRAMA.

I would imagine that Falorin Balogun may feel the same way about such DRAMA over his suspension.

Time to avoid the drama and place our mascot back on IGNORE.
Thank you.

I can assure you all, there are moments as a ref where the brain simply doesn't process properly. You can get lost and confused and just blank out.

I asked AI for historic examples of offsides not called. It gave the following as the #1 example:

1. Carlos Tevez vs. Mexico (2010 FIFA World Cup)
In the Round of 16, Argentina's Lionel Messi chipped the ball to Carlos Tevez, who headed it into an empty net. Tevez was miles offside, standing completely alone in front of the goalkeeper - but the linesman failed to raise his flag. The blunder was made worse when the stadium's big screens immediately replayed the incident, leaving the Mexican players furious and prompting calls for video technology.

There are many other examples. You can do your own research.

I'm obviously VERY biased. Doesn't matter, it's still 11 v 11. We could have Messi + Haaland and still lose. We could have Cape Verde and win.

The Balogun card issue will be an asterisk after the 90+ is played. What happens on the field will be where the conversation will be.

Trump Asked FIFA President to Review Folarin Balogun's Red Card, Report Says

Trump Asked FIFA to Review U.S. Player's Suspension. Now He's Eligible to Play. - The New York Times

Elite 8, only?
You're as easy as a woman in a window with a red light in Amsterdam.

This is FIFA, winning it all ups the ante

For me, the King of Debt would have to wipe away $40T of debt without negative domestic and global consequences in order to get on Rushmore.

Very lengthy sports talk show in UK discussing sports and politics related to Balogun and Trump and Infantino and Belgium and UEFA.

What a mess. Trump really never should have gotten involved, and if he did then he never should have opened his fat mouth about it, because now everyone outside USA is totally against this team.

Belgium possibly challenging Balogun as an eligible player, which would threaten us getting kicked out of the tournament (never gonna happen).

Suggestion that Pochettino not play Balogun tonight, on principle.

England wanting to rescind the red card suspension they received last night vs Mexico, same as USA treatment was received.

Trump always messes things up!
Balogun didn't ask to be at the center of an international row.

It really wouldn't have mattered either way. If Trump didn't say anything, everyone would blame him. If Trump did say something, everyone would blame him. He's the easy scapegoat for everything.

What Trump did say was very mild. He has no ability to force the commission to do anything.

I will wait to see what Balogun says before determining his mindset around this but odds are good he's not upset he's playing.

That is a claim that is not substantiated by any facts in evidence.
It's a strawman argument.

Presidents do not get "involved" in sporting events.
Period.

He could have easily remarked that he "did not agree" with the red card and leave it at that.
No one would have blamed him for not having made a phone call to the FIFA president.
That's absurd logic at best.
