Dembele and Marquinos also injured during the game out for a month or so. 3 injuries in one game...

ManU being bossed 3-0 at the hour mark on the road by Fabregas' Como, perhaps the prettiest city in CL competition. Amazing coaching job by Cesc to put a soccer backwater like Como into the big league, look at that stadium!

Arsenal at Bayern and Leipzig at Real are the two big games later this afternoon.

It turns out Messi is good juggler as well. For those who have not played juggling is done for hours on end to develop coordination and timing, which goes into having "touch."

Neil Pierre signed a new contract with the Union. I don't understand why, he should be in Europe by next summer at the latest. Maybe there is a wink between the team and his agent that if he signed they would make it easier to leave. Otherwise, he should fire his agent.

Sullivan is out with a knock for tomorrow's game so I am skipping it. Maybe I will watch Taha Habroune instead. He has been on fire. He is very skilled but not heavy enough.

That's too bad about Pierre. I also think he'd be better off in Europe.

Though unlike you, sluggo, I'm thinking the ideal for him, for a year, would be to be sold to a major club but then loaned out to a lesser one so he does not play in a league like the Premier League right away. Maybe loaned to a top Dutch Eredivisie or Portuguese or Belgian club for a year (one that will be in Champions or Europa league). Pierre needs to keep getting minutes, and to hone his defending and ball distribution in matches that aren't glorified exhibitions like MLS, but I don't think he gets playing time in the Premier League right now.

Thursday Europa League review for US players of note (plus a couple Friday matches):

Malik Tillman played the first 74 minutes and got a decent outside-foot assist in Bayer Leverkusen's 2-0 win at Crete. He needs to keep getting goal contributions to earn Leverkusen's trust back, I think.

Weston Mckennie played the entire match at right-center midfielder for Juventus (in a 3-5-2?) in a 2-2 home draw against Ligue 1 opponent Rennes. Mckennie played decently, setting up his teammates a couple times for what could have been good chances, but he was also dispossessed a few times which wasn't great. Borderline US player Bryan Reynolds played the entire match as well at right wing-back for Rennes, and got a nice headed assist on Rennes' first goal (and could have had another assist earlier), but also was the one to concede a penalty (handball) that allowed Juve to tie it up 2-2.

Bournemouth and Tyler Adams hosted AC Milan with Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic. Neither Pulisic, nor the French national Adrien Rabiot who has been Milan's hottest player, played at all (nor did Modric). Bournemouth dominated the match (3.14 to 0.11 on xG) and and won 3-0, though all three goals were direct strikes on set pieces, two penalties and a free kick. The first was a penalty and red card at the 30 minute mark of the first half on Milan's starting goalie Maignan drawn by Tyler Adams in a way that I'm sure would only make sluggo's distaste for Adams grow. Milan had no chance after that, which might explain why they did not sub in some of their other players. No one on the pitch for Milan seemed to play well, including Musah, who early on was dispossessed badly in a terrible spot to generate one of Bournemouth's many good chances.

Chris Richards played the whole match at right center back in Crystal Palace's 2-2 road draw at the Turkish club Besiktas. Palace could not pull ahead in the final minutes despite having a man advantage after a red card on Besiktas at minute 77 and the score already 2-2. At least it wasn't another loss. Not a good season for Palace and Richards so far. Zavier Gozo nowhere to be seen still, not even on the bench.

Tim Weah subbed in at minute 83 of Marseille's 1-0 road loss at Austrian club Sturm Graz, with the score already 1-0.

Tanner Tessmann played the first half before being subbed out in Lyon's 3-0 road loss at German Bundesliga club Hoffenheim, leaving with his club down 1-0.

In Friday league action:

Joe Scally of all people is leading Borussia Monchengladbach in scoring and goal contributions (I think). Scally had a heel flick redirection goal and an assist in a much needed 3-2 Bundesliga victory over Stuttgart. Monchengladbach still seem bad in general and may get relegated. They had 6 losses in 6 league matches up to this point.

Speaking of average Americans, the ones at Middlesbrough looked fairly good in their 5-1 EFL Championship road win over Bolton. Aidan Morris played the whole match and scored Boro's first goal. Sebastian Berhalter played 86 minutes, leaving after all the scoring had been done. Max Arfsten subbed in at minute 69 with the score at 3-1.

As for Taha Habroune, I did not get a chance to watch the midweek US Open Cup final between Columbus and St. Louis. (Kind of glad I didn't as it went to penalties at 0-0 with St. Louis winning). Did you watch, and if so, how did Habroune look, sluggo? The one time I've watched him, against Orlando in Columbus' US Open Cup semifinal, I thought he looked good, though my impression of him was more as a likely 2028 U-23 Olympic player.

Have to put in a plug for my son's high school soccer team: Bay School of San Francisco (inside the Presidio, where we live).

Just finished their regular season undefeated today with a 9-0 win. 14 wins and 3 draws in 17 matches, 14-0-3, (8-0-2 in league). Bay is currently ranked the #1 team in the entire North Coast Section D1, and #2 in all of California for Fall season soccer. (Many other schools play soccer in the Winter trimester). And Bay's league is not full of cupcakes, other than the cellar-dweller they beat 9-0 today - it has two other teams in the North Coast top 10, including #3 (or 4) International, Bay's biggest rival, and another in the top 20. Bay also played multiple other top 10 North Coast teams out of conference (Arcata, College Prep, Athenian).

Outstanding team defense: gave up just 3 goals in 17 games, and only 1 goal in 10 league games. Of course that all goes out the window with playoffs where it is win or go home. League playoffs first, then North Coast.

Thanks for the report. Too bad so many Americans are in the Europa League when in previous years they were in the Champions League.

I have not seen Habroune except in highlights for some time. I think he is a strong candidate for the Olympics. He is very thin without being fast, so I don't know if the USMNT is in his future. His skill does seem high.

I did record and watch the classico (Barca - Real Madrid match) since it was on a channel everyone gets. I won't comment on it much since you already know what I'm going to say, sluggo. Both are teams with tremendously talented players, of course. The team that was more disciplined and fundamentally sound on defense won (same was true when Spain beat France in this past summer's World Cup).

Too many matches over the weekend with US players to review them all, but I'll cover most of them, other than the Friday ones, which I already did upthread. You (sluggo) already highlighted three of them in which Pulisic, Mckennie and Weah all scorred, so I'll just mention those briefly. But first:

The standout performance for me was none of those three, but rather once again ALEX FREEMAN, who was all over the pitch in Villareal's come-from-behind 2-1 road La Liga win at Valencia. Freeman started at left back with Mourino at right back, then swapped spots with Mourino to start the second half, and by the end of the match, was playing something like a straight right attacking "10" (or at least box-to-box "8"). Crazy match, as it was 10 v 10 at the end after two red cards.

Freeman led Villareal in duels won, generally made good decisions (I counted 3 bad ones, but countless solid to great ones) and was strong with the ball. He should have had an assist. And of course he scored the tying goal on a header (during live play, NOT off a set piece). Valencia's first half goal was on a penalty, which Freeman was not at fault for conceding. I don't know if Freeman was man of the match, but he should be.

Aside: I actually watched this entire match (Valencia - Villareal) streaming on my phone on ESPN Deportes Saturday morning, pausing and switching to watch Cal Football at SMU, then pausing that and switching back and so on. I eventually reached halftime in the Cal game with no buffer left on my DVR, so I switched entirely to watching Freeman until the match was over and had a shower. After my shower, before watching the second half of the Cal game on my DVR, I cheated and snuck a peek at the current score. SMU had already outscored Cal something like 28-0 in the second half. The amazing thing is I felt more relieved than sad. SMU had saved me the bother and time of watching the rest of the Cal game, and I just went to my DVR and deleted it. I can't remember a time I have been so apathetic about Cal Football since before I was a student nearly 40 years ago, and it's all happened in the past two months. Honestly, the Valencia - Villareal match was more compelling, between a bottom-table La Liga side, and a mid-table one, mainly due to Freeman.

Ok, now back to AC Milan and Christian Pulisic, who won easily 2-0 (xG was 3.12 - 0.42) on the road at bottom-table Serie A foe Udinese. In addition to scoring a sweet early goal after a great run behind and great control once Modric found him, Pulisic could have easily had one or two assists, and was generally dangerous throughout the match from the highlights. Hope to see this more consistently from him, and against better opponents. Yunus Musah came in at minute 73 and by one report, was neither impressive nor unimpressive (no major mistakes).

By contrast, Weston Mckennie's goal in Juventus' 2-0 road win at Serie A foe Lecce was not nearly as pretty but I'll take it. Nor was the match as dominant a win as Milan's. But Mckennie being fit and making goal contributions is a welcome sight. I would love it if Balogun could be traded to join him as I'm not sold on Juve's current beanpole "car lot inflatable air dancer" striker Woltemade.

And Tim Weah's goal in Marseille's 4-3 home win against Ligue 1 doormat Le Havre was somewhere in between - stumbling, almost tripping over the ball, but still dribbling past three players and lunging it in off the outside of his foot. Filippo at Tactical Manager youtube called it a "sloppy golasso."

Gio Reyna played the first 84 minutes of Strasbourg's 3-0 road loss at Ligue 1 opponent Rennes, though by all accounts, while no one on Strasbourg played great, Reyna was not the problem. He led Strasbourg in duels won and generally was doing the usual Gio Reyna things. Glad he seems to be healthy.

Malik Tillman subbed in at minute 41 of Bayer Leverkusen's 3-0 road loss at Bundesliga opponent Hoffenheim, and while he did NOT play particularly well, it was a team-wide problem by one account. Still, Tillman needs to pick it up for Leverkusen. He used to be a guy that would play well for club (like with PSV) and not for country, and now it seems like it's the other way around!

Chris Richards played the whole match at right-center back in a back 3 for Crystal Palace in their 2-0 Premier League home loss to Newcastle. I don't think either goal was his fault, but still not a good season so far for Richards and Palace. Zavier Gozo not even the bench. I think he's with their U-21s.

Antonee "Jedi" Robinson played the whole match at left back in Fulham's 1-0 road win at Coventry.

Folarin Balogun once again came off the bench (minute 58) in Monaco's 2-2 Ligue 1 home draw with Toulouse, who had Mark Mckenzie play the whole match at left-center back in a back 4. Have not watched highlights or heard/read commentary on this one, but it feels like Balogun should have taken the Everton deal. Monaco have their starting striker in Brunner, and Balogun almost seems third choice, with Monaco not seeming to care that they are letting him drop in value as a tradeable asset. Balogun really does need a trade in January (maybe to Juventus with Mckennie as I said, which would be nice).

Tyler Adams and Bournemouth humiliated Manchester United in a 3-0 Premier League road win.

Sergino Dest played the entire match at right back in PSV Endhoven's 1-1 home draw against 1st place Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie. Ricardo Pepi is still injured and did not make the bench.

Diego Kochen played the entire match at goalkeeper in Lyngby's 3-2 road loss to league "power" Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga. Stats say he made 4 saves. Have not heard/read any commentary on how Kochen looked and whether any of the goals he let in were easily preventable.

Santiago Castaneda played the entire match at the "6" holding midfielder position in Paderborn's 1-0 Bundesliga home win over Hamburg. Again, did not watch the highlights or hear/read commentary, but this is a fairly young player who might be worth starting to pay attention to, especially if it's true that he can play center back as well. It sucks he is just 2 months too old for the 2028 U-23 Olympic age cutoff.

Tanner Tessmann played the entire match in Lyon's 2-0 Ligue 1 road loss at PSG. Sacrificial lamb?

Mathis Albert and Johnny Cardoso are out with apparently short term injuries for Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid respectively, and Auston Trusty is on leave from Glasgow Celtic (father passed away).

Ok, moving from Europe to the MLS:

Philadelphia Union hosting New England was actually a great match from a competitive perspective despite the absence of Cavan Sullivan due to injury. Neil Pierre had a mixed game, scoring on a header late to pull Philly within 2-1 (which is how it ended), but also conceded a penalty at the very outer edge of the box. I do disagree with you a bit sluggo - I think Pierre's path matters. There are things he can and hopefully will improve on, and he can do so better at a mid-tier Euro team (say on loan from a top Euro team) like at the top end of the Dutch Eredivise or Belgian or Portuguese leagues that also have Champions League or Europa Cup matches. Mainly, I would like to see Pierre improve his on-ball decision-making and his judiciousness on when to go for a heavy challenge in the box. I think he can learn these things with competitive playing time (MLS barely qualifies as that, because MLS matches are not as competitive as say, Europa Cup matches).

Peyton Miller had a good game for New England, though definitely not a great one. Miller played the whole match at left wing-back in a 4-2-3-1 where he will play for the US instead of left wing as he has been doing for NE. He got an assist on what I think was a shot, but still a great play to use his quickness to get inside position on Frankie Westfield on a long cross for a twisting header that was headed across goal just past the far (right) post before NE's striker Turgeman arrived and redirected it in. Miller had a couple other good moments and decent shots, but not good enough to finish. His defense overall was not bad, though he and another NE defender did get posterized on the Pierre goal even though they were double-teaming him, looking like schoolkids trying to outjump a grown man.

As sluggo linked above, Adri Mehmeti controlled the match well for Red Bull New York in their crucial (for RBNY playoff chances) 2-0 home win against league power Miami. Julian Hall, on the other hand, missed a bunch of chances. If he's going to be a Klose/Gerd Muller sloppy-scoring poacher for the US eventually, Hall needs to put these chances away more consistently.

Justin Ellis played the first 60 minutes of Orlando FC's 2-2 home draw with NYCFC, leaving with his team up 2-1. From the highlights, Ellis seemed to have a typical Ellis game, steady and technical on the ball, and should have had an assist or two if his teammates (other than Griezmann) could finish better. I noticed that teenage midfielder/defender Jonathan Shore (eligible for 2027 U-20) had his first MLS goal to tie it up for NYCFC deep into stoppage time.

Goalie Brian Schwake had 6 saves as Nashville got the 2-0 road shutout at Montreal to clinch the top overall point total (Supporters' Shield) in MLS this season.

That is the beauty of these cup tournaments that are spliced into the regular league seasons in soccer. In this case, England's Carabao Cup. Anything can happen in a single game, especially when it is played at some ragged stadium on the road with a bad surface. And the big club rests their top players to save them for the league game the coming weekend (and then can only sub in 5).

In soccer also , the overall field dimensions are not even standard and can vary within a large allowable range. To say nothing of the field quality. So some crazy stuff can happen in these local stadiums. And when the score is tied and goes to penalties as this one did…

I say none of this to minimize Arsenal's loss (I don't care for Arsenal) or Fleetwood's historic win. It is probably a little like a 16 seed beating a 1 seed in March Madness. Or maybe a 32 seed if there were 128 teams. Though that does not factor in the home-road factor here which favored Fleetwood or Arsenal resting their players (which I assume they did, I don't know for sure).

Thanks for the update. I am impressed you are keeping up.

I decided not to watch the Union because Sullivan was not playing. I decided to watch Peyton Miller. But wait, he was playing the Union. So I watched the first half at the gym, which was very boring. The Union had the better of it but no goals. Pierre was strong, Westfield, who I will always make fun of for being generic, was actually playing well, and Miller was not doing much one way or the other. I saw the highlights of the second half where Pierre blundered. It was nice to see him score late for the first time in a while. This was the Union's first MLS loss under their new coach, which has been like 15 games. They will still make the playoffs, which is not a thing in soccer. The real champion wins the "Supporters Shield," whatever that means, for having the best record. I think Nashville clinched that.

Barca's maniac strategy works against all but the best teams, but so far, they have failed when going up against similar level teams. I am disappointed.

Few midweek games. Not a full rundown, but here are some. This time Wed. MLS first.

- New England hosting Red Bull New York. Entertaining game from the highlights, with NE going up 2-0, RBNY tying it up, then NE pulling ahead late. Another solid game for Adri Mehmeti who played the whole match, led both sides in touches, and should have had an assist (xA = 0.52). Mixed/abbreviated game for Peyton Miller who subbed in with around half an hour left and seemed to play left wing-back. Could have had an assist as well (xA = 0.24). Hard to tell how Miller did on defense, which will be key. Another confusing game from Julian Hall, who also played the whole match. He really is good at running in behind and making himself available for dangerous through passes. And the goal he did finish was a thing of beauty. But he missed several other chances. Seemingly shaky game for Brooklyn Raines.

- Justin Ellis played around 70 mins for Orlando in their 2-2 road draw with Chicago. Also could have had an assist once, and a goal another time in typical, technical Ellis style, but was otherwise fairly subdued. I have to admit that Griezmann is fun to watch in the MLS.

- Didn't watch Nashville hosting Philadelphia Union, with Cavan Sullivan still out with injury. 0-0 draw, clinching the playoffs for Philly, I think. I guess both Neil Pierre for Philly and Brian Schwake for Nashville helped keep a clean sheet.

- San Jose hosted Colorado to a 2-2 draw. Good news, coming back from injury Nico Tsakiris subbed in at minute 79 with the match down to 10v10 after a red card on each team and San Jose down 2-1. In his short time, Tsakiris could have had multiple set piece assists, and did finish with 1 assist off a nicely-placed corner to level the score at 2-2. Tsakiris (21yo, eligible for U-23 2028 Olympics) kind of reminds me of Sebastian Berhalter if Berhalter were younger, better on-ball, but more injury prone. Both accurate strikers of the ball.

Now Europe:

- In the EFL Carabao Cup round of 16, Crystal Palace somehow managed a 1-0 road win over Fulham against the run of play despite Fulham having 1.54 xG to Palace's 0.56. So a clean sheet for Chris Richards starting in the middle of a back three, but he did not seem to be that active. Fulham just missed their chances. Antonee Robinson seemed to have a shaky match to the point the announcers commented on it. Brutal in a way for Palace that they are fighting desperately to avoid relegation in the Premier League while consistently having to play midweek matches in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League. At least Zavier Gozo made the bench for Crystal Palace, the best thing he's done in weeks!

- Also in the Carabao Cup, Bournemouth continue trouncing everyone, taking out a solid Aston Villa side 3-0 at home. Tyler Adams subbed in at minute 63 with Bournemouth already up 2-0 and got a pretty through ball assist after a steal.

- Not great matches for the prominent Americans in Serie A. Yunus Musah played the whole match and Christian Pulisic came in at minute 58 with AC Milan leading Bologna 2-1 at home, but the Bologna scored three unanswered to win 4-2, winning at Milan for the first time in a decade. Pulisic was involved in a couple goal chances, so it's hard to tell how he did. Musah seemed directly involved in some of Milan's problems. I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is that Musah does well other than dribble forward, being successful 80% of the time and getting his pocket picked 20% of the time resulting in a dangerous chance for the opponent. AC Milan have the derby against Inter this weekend.

- Weston Mckennie and Juventus lose 2-0 at Genoa, who are terrible.

Also, I have to report the bad with the good when it comes to youth soccer I watched this week...

My son's high school team Bay suffered their first loss of the season in the league tourney semi-finals, losing to fourth place Gateway in the 1v4 matchup 1-0 (goal was with less than 10 mins left). You could see it coming after Bay missed several chances throughout the match, hitting the crossbar once. Bay's great defense finally broke late in the game, leaving a Gateway forward space for a long shot from just outside the box which he put into the corner. Only Bay's fourth goal given up all season in 18 matches. Bay had struggled with Gateway in two close league matches earlier in the season, with a 0-0 draw and a 1-0 win.

Bay now have 14 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss in 18 matches. On to the North Coast playoffs where Bay should probably still be a #1 or #2 overall seed in D1, but now needing to get their mojo back.

After a couple depressing posts, here is some good news. Gabriel Wesseh, a teenage winger from Alanta United who is now playing in Norway, is getting a lot of buzz. Of the upcoming US wingers, I am starting to think Gozo is not skilled enough and Albert is not fast enough. Maybe Wesseh is both. You can read a bit about him and see a highlight at the tweet. He came up originally through the Union like everyone else, but he seems to be a late bloomer. He is playing for the U-19s (his age year) but should be a very strong candidate for the U-20 WC.

Zero reason why Wesseh should not be in the U-20 World Cup next year. If he can have a Freeman-like trajectory and become a good Europe-top-five-league-level winger by 2030, that would be amazing!

In games today (Fri. 10/30):

Speaking of Freeman, he did not start and came in at minute 80 with Villareal trailing at home to Espanyol 1-0 in their La Liga clash, and that's how it finished (1-0 loss for Villareal). Not a good result, though hardly Freeman's fault. He was involved and aggressive while in. Villareal may be saving Freeman for their Champions League match against PSG (see below) on Tuesday, though to my mind, that is a likely loss, so why save him?

(PSG played on the road and of course rolled over hapless Ligue 1 relegation-bound Le Havre 5-1).

Cole Campbell, likely a U-23 2028 Olympic player but probably not good enough for the US senior team despite his recent call-up, subbed in late for Elversberg and scored in a 4-1 home Bundesliga win over Mainz. Campbell's goal was a fun scissor kick off a cross, so I'll put the timestamped highlight below.

Saturday Halloween US soccer updates on players of interest:

Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah both played the first 82 minutes of the Milan derby helping AC Milan to a 3-1 win over league-leading Inter in the Italian Serie A (all four goals in first half). Pulisic scored the first goal in the opening minutes on a nice header, and Musah drew the foul leading to the free kick for AC Milan's third goal. Frenchman Rabiot scored AC Milan's second goal, a cheeky little chip off a corner, but Belgian right wingback Diego Moreira was man of the match, assisting both the first two goals, then scoring the third on a wicked free kick. AC Milan's D continued to look shaky, but goalie Maignan made multiple great saves to limit Inter to one goal. Timestamped video of Moreira's assist to Pulisic below.

Chris Richards played the whole match at right-center back in a back three for struggling Crystal Palace in their 2-0 road Premier League loss at Tottenham, though Palace were down to ten men with the score 0-0 after their center forward was sent off 13 minutes into the match. Sort of no hope after that (not really sure that Richards is to blame here). Zavier Gozo did not even make the bench for Palace.

Antonee "Jedi" Robinson played the entire match at left back as Fulham hung on for a 1-1 Premier League road draw at a fairly good Aston Villa side. Robinson did get beat once by fast Brazilian winger Alysson, but also had two great left-side runs and crosses that each could and probably should have led to assists if his teammates had not missed close-range shots. Weirdly, Fulham's goal came on an own goal by Villa's Japanese star goalie Suzuki off an Olympico corner attempt. Villa's goal was not Robinson's fault.

Malik Tillman continues to disappoint at Bayer Leverkusen, subbing in at minute 75 with his team already down 4-1 (finished 4-2), a home upset loss against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. I actually had the match recorded and watched after Tillman came in. He did not figure in Leverkusen's goal while he was in and his body language was terrible, jogging around lethargically, with a couple passes to nobody thrown in for good measure. Something seems seriously wrong. He needs a move out of Leverkusen.

Mathis Albert did not even make the bench in an otherwise entertaining 2-2 rivalry draw between Bundesliga powers, Dortmund at Bayern Munich.

Santiago Castaneda and Joe Scally each played the entire match for Paderborn and Monchengladbach respectively in a 0-0 Bundesliga draw. Castaneda was man of the match in Paderborn's previous match, and may be a consideration to call up at the defensive midfield "6" position to back up Tyler Adams for the November competitive window if Johnny Cardoso is not fit yet and Adri Mehmeti is not ready.

Speaking of Tyler Adams, he played the entire match in Bournemouth's 2-0 Premier League home win over Leeds. Brenden Aaronson came in at minute 84 for Leeds but did not doo much.

And speaking of Johnny Cardoso, he still seems to be injured and did not make the bench for Atletico Madrid's 2-0 road La Liga win at Levante.

In a FRIDAY (10/30) match I had missed earlier, 20yo US Goalie Diego Kochen helped Lyngby to a much needed 2-1 home win over Randers in the Danish top league, registering 4 saves.

It's hard to take anything from PSV Eindhoven's 7-0 win over Willem in the Dutch Eredivisie seriously since the bottom of that league is so bad, but Ricardo Pepi did return from injury as a sub to score a goal, and Sergino Dest did start and get an assist, for whatever that is worth.

Sebastian Berhalter had both a goal and an assist, and Aidan Morris was heavily involved throughout, both playing the entire match in league-leading Middlesbrough's 3-0 home victory over Charlton in the EFL Championship league. Max Arfsten came in at minute 78 and did not do much.

My guy George Campbell played the entire match, notably at left-center back in a back 4 for West Brom in their solid 3-1 road EFL Championship league victory over a decent West Ham team. Maybe if the US need a viable left-center back other than lefty Auston Trusty, Campbell can take some backup minutes there.

Jack McGlynn played the entire match and had both a goal and an assist in Stoke City's 2-0 home EFL Championship league win over league doormat Preston North End. U-23 2028 Olympic-eligible outside back Luca Bombino also played the first 73 minutes and left with the score already 2-0.

And yes, Barcelona is back to their high-flying ways against average competition, dumping Alaves at home 6-1. Barca is to elite-level European soccer what Dominique Wilkins was to the mid-80s NBA.

And back to the MLS:

Neil Pierre played the entire match and Cavan Sullivan, coming off injury, subbed in at minute 60 with no score, but the Philadelphia Union lost 1-0 on the road at Cincinnati. Have not looked at it further, waiting for sluggo's description after he fast-forwarded to minute 60.

Justin Ellis subbed in at minute 62 with Orlando already down 2-0 on the road at Charlotte, and Orlando proceeded to concede two more for a 4-0 loss which is not great for their playoff positioning.

U-23 2028 Olympic eligible Taha Habroune played the entire match at right attacking midfield in Columbus' 3-0 home win over DC United. 16yo (2010 birth year) Oscar Avilez subbed in at halftime with the score 2-0 and played the entire second half at left attacking midfielder for DC United. U-17 WC cup guy for Nov.?'

U-20 World Cup eligible right back Harbor Miller continues his solid play, 82 minutes and an assist in the LA Galaxy's 4-1 home victory over Austin FC. Also U-20 WC eligible holding midfielder Ervin Torres scored Austin's only goal.

U-23 2028 Olympic eligible Nico Tsakiris, recently back from injury (again) played the first 60 minutes of San Jose's 2-1 home win over Real Salt Lake, leaving with the score already 2-1.

Love the writeup. You should start a blog or an X soccer account. For real.

Saw the Sullivan minutes. He was instantly the best Union player. Unfortunately, they put him at left wing because his journeyman brother was playing his position, right wing. Still opened up play and created a bunch of opportunities. Pierre did not do much good or bad while I watched. The goal was a keeper error by Blake, spilling a shot he should have saved for an easy tap in. Overall, Cincy has way more talent than Philly.

Celentano made one good save for Cincy like the one Blake spilled and punched out a bunch of corners. The announcers said he made more Every time I see him he looks good. Was looking for advanced MLS goalie stats, but could not find any. Wikipedia says he got called up in 2023 but did not play. I think this guy has something. Unfortunately, he cut his hair, and his hair and mustache no longer match.

Looking forward to 90 minutes of Cavan next game.

I always like Paxten better than his brother Brenden. More skilled, less quick. Only 23. I think he deserves a call.

Sunday Nov. 1st review of US players and prospects:

In the Italian Serie A, Weston Mckennie started for Juventus but was pulled at halftime while the match was still scoreless. Finished as a 2-0 home victory for Juve over mid-table Napoli.

In the French Ligue 1, Gio Reyna and Strasbourg crushed Auxerre 5-1 at home (xG 3.07 - 0.44). Reyna appeared to play a tucked-in left attacking midfielder and subbed out after 66 minutes with his team up 3-0.

Also in Ligue 1, Folarin Balogun finally got a few more minutes and a goal for Monaco as Paris Brunner, the young German who has been starting at striker, was pulled at halftime trailing Paris FC 2-0 at the time. Balogun came in for the entire second half and scored Monaco's only goal, though most of the work was done on a beautiful run by the right winger and the announcers thought it might be an own goal at first (but Balogun did get the touch). Monaco still lost 3-1 on the road in the end. Timestamped youtube below.

Also in Ligue 1, Tanner Tessmann played the whole match at central mid (in a 4-3-3) in Lyons' 2-0 home victory over Angers.

And in the last Ligue 1 match, Tim Weah and Marseille got a 2-0 home win over Mark Mckenzie and Toulouse, though the visitors had the better of it for most of the game.

Adri Mehmeti and Julian Hall hooked up for a beautiful assist and goal (assist by Mehmeti more beautiful than Hall's goal, but both good) for Red Bull New York's first goal on the road against MLS-leading Nashville. Brian Schwake with some good goalkeeping despite conceding the 2 goals, including a nice penalty save early on and a spectacular kick save off the crossbar when faced with a RBNY player (Ruvalcaba) played through. Nashville come back from 2-0 down with two RBNY own goals and score in stoppage time for a 3-2 win to tie the most ever points in MLS history (I think?). They may have knocked RBNY out of the MLS playoffs. Timestamped video of the Mehmeti to Hall goal below:

Peyton Miller started (at right attacking mid, before switching to left later) for New England who went ahead 1-0 at home on Miami but could not hold Messi and co. off who came back for the 2-1 win. On the New England goal, Miller did not technically get the assist but he should have. See timestamped video below:

U-20 World Cup eligible holding midfielder Cooper Sanchez has been playing and starting regularly for Atlanta, but he got his first MLS goal today in Atlanta's 3-1 home win against Toronto.

Thanks man. I am not on social media and have never had a Twitter/X account. I also am not much of a blogger, but I am going to collect some of my reviews of US players and prospects, date-stamp them, and paste them onto a public google doc (link below). Feel free to share it with anyone.

Really important game from Reyna that I did not see, though I might watch the highlights later on the Bein website. Strasbourg was near the relegation zone in France. You stay there too long and the manager gets sacked. And this manager loves Reyna, starts him every game, a new manager would probably be worse. Too many times new managers bench Americans.

Love that pass by Mehmeti. When he has time his passing is unreal for a guy who is 17. He needs to get a little better holding the ball like Rodri and Pedri so he can make those passes. Rodri is also much stronger, which helps, Pedri is small but his skills are unparalleled. I have heard Mehmeti interviewed. His father was a pro and I think still helps train him. His soccer brain is way beyond his years, which is true of most of our current top players.

I am now splitting my big six of U-21s into two tiers:
The big four: Sullivan, Pierre, Ellis, Mehmeti
The other two: Gozo, Albert
Not sure if Kochen fits in either tier or below, I need to see more. I have not seen anyone else good enough for those tiers. Hall and MIller may be banging on the door. Maybe Tsakiris, maybe Habroune, maybe Harbor Miller (who I have not seen at all). Clubs seem to love Jakupovic and Wesseh. Jakupovic is mostly potential right now, I have not seen Wesseh.

U17 World Cup starts three weeks from yesterday for the US. With Sullivan, Albert, and Mehmeti all playing up, I do not expect much. The U20 WC next year should be more interesting.

OneKeg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pretty much agree with most of that that. Sullivan might be in his own class among the U-21s right now in my eyes, but the other tier 1s (Pierre, Mehmeti, Ellis) could catch up.

As for tier 2, for me, it's all maybes: Albert, Miller, Hall, Kochen. Kochen is unknown, but not really any more unknown than Albert playing against decent competition. And Gozo, for me is down with the others below tier 2, though that could change quickly if he gets a transfer to the right club.

Would be interesting to make a list of the US players and prospects that most need a transfer. Balogun, Tillman, Gozo, Albert, though a loan would work just as well for the latter two.

Regarding the U-17s, with RBNY eliminated from the MLS playoffs now (I think?) and Dortmund not playing Albert at all, I know it probably won't happen, but we should just try to get Mehmeti and Albert on the U-17 WC team. I think it's quite plausible that neither makes the senior USMNT November camp anyway. If Cardoso is still injured, just call up Santiago Castaneda (or Brooklyn Raines, but I'd prefer Castaneda) instead of Mehmeti to back up Adams at the "6" on the senior team and ease Mehmeti in later.
