Australia:

"The lockdown comes after an outbreak at a Holiday Inn near Melbourne Airport that was being used to house returned travelers.

The cluster of cases linked to the hotel grew to 13 on Thursday night, with five new cases emerging, per AP. As of Friday morning, the state's active case tally was 19.

Where it stands: Life had returned to near normalcy in the state of Victoria, with packed bars full of unmasked patrons. But now, over 6 million Victorians will only be able to leave home for essential shopping, work, exercise and caregiving." Axios

*"Florida reported 8,525 new cases on Thursday, has no intention to go on lockdown, and will hold the two most-attended sporting events of the pandemic in the span of a week." Axios

We are doing a good job, but part of it is that Asia doesn't need the vaccines so they are in no hurry and the EU biffed it. This is kind of like the 1984 Olympics.

Hehe. Not sure how McDonald's didn't go bankrupt with their Olympics game promotion for free items when the USA medaled.

Before the start of the 1984 Olympics, McDonald's struck up the idea of giving away free items for every medal that the U.S. won. How it worked was that a patron, upon purchasing an item at Mickey D's, would get a scratch-off card with an Olympic event on it. If the U.S. team won gold in that event, the patron would get a Big Mac. If the team won silver, the patron got french fries. Bronze meant a free soft drink. In certain respects, this was a genius idea because it gave us a tangible investment in the Games; Carl Lewis' success would be our success. We were participating from the seats of our own couch. The motto was "U.S. Wins, You Win."

There was one factor that marketers didn't fully appreciate: the Soviet Union wasn't joining the Games. The U.S. had boycotted the 1980 Olympics, held in Moscow, because of Soviet warfare in Afghanistan. In turn, the Soviets (as well as East Germany and several other communist nations) turned down the invitation to come to L.A.

I loved that promotion. Early on, I was getting a meal at McDonald's and whoever was working the register spilled my Coke all over a big stack of the scratch off tickets. After getting me another drink, she handed me the whole stack of about 100 scratch off tickets, probably because they couldn't hand out soggy tickets. I ate a lot of free McDonalds that summer.

My other memory of the 1984 Olympics was buying a ticket for a soccer match between West Germany and Saudi Arabia played at Stanford Stadium. Despite having been to at least 2 Big Games there, I couldn't find the damn stadium for at least an hour. I just went in circles around the campus and Palo Alto. I was really mad at myself for not bringing a map. I missed most of the first half. West Germany was already up 4-0 by the time I arrived and the final score was 6-0. Even the T-shirt I bought was a piece of crap.

With medics and scientists standing by 24 hours a day, researchers will inject closely controlled doses of coronavirus into the noses of quarantined volunteers. This set of volunteers won't have received vaccines. The idea is to start with the smallest possible amount that allows researchers to gauge infection levels, symptoms and transmission methods while trying to ensure the volunteers' safety.

If that goes well, a second stage of the trials is planned to include the use of vaccines -- researchers haven't specified which ones -- to test how well they protect against symptoms and possibly transmission. Vaccines would be administered to healthy volunteers, who would then be purposely infected with coronavirus, again in closed-off quarters to contain the virus.

"The politicization of mask-wearing may have led to the deaths of "tens of thousands" of Americans, NIH director Francis Collins told Axios editor-in-chief Nicholas Johnston on "Axios on HBO."

"The evidence was pretty compelling by last March or April that uniform wearing of masks would reduce transmission of this disease," Collins said. "And yet ... mask wearing became a statement about your political party or an invasion of your personal freedom."

"Now, the virus that we're talking about having to do you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We're in great shape though. We have 12 cases 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now." Donald J. tRump, February 10, 2020
