Clemson and Florida State are SEC programs. Very surprised if this is true.
Many folks around ACC country believe FSU wants the B1G. And the B1G has them as a potential target. The B1G would love FSU, UNC, UVa and possibly Clemson and Miami
I find this interesting in that UNC is big in basketball and sucks at everything else. UVa is on par with Cal in terms of football and basketball. Curious to hear that the B1G would want them instead of Cal and Furd but who the hell knows these days. It almost feels like Fox and ESPN want to punish the remaining the Pac teams.
"almost"?

It's very possible that Empty Suit George pissed off ESPN and Fox so much that they decided to let the Pac burn to the ground.

Fox has refused to negotiate with the Pac-12 since USC and UCLA announced for the B1G. It definitely feels like they are trying to orchestrate the Pac-12's demise. Fox apparently doesn't mind paying the Big XII more if they poach the worst Pac-12 teams.

Between Fox not being willing to talk to us, ESPN offering one conference 3x the value of anyone else they work with, and ESPN undercutting the Pac on one of their potential media partners (CW), you almost start to get the feeling that ESPN/Fox resent the Pac. I can't help but think they resent the Pac network. The Pac was the only conference that created their own network completely independent of ESPN/Fox, and they did so with the intent of doing direct to customer distribution. Fox/ESPN were cut out of the process and are now returning the favor.

Interesting podcast on this on Yahoo Sports. The columnists involved seem to admit they don't know every detail here, but indicate that they feel the Pac 12 overplayed its hand. They saw the B1G media deal, and thought the PAC ought to get ~ 70% of that, and that there was no appetite to pay that amount. They are also shocked that no deal has been presented, and indicate that the only reason for that is most likely that all the offers are bad.

Smartest move the Big XII made was signing in fall '22 with Endeavor... the Hollywood talent agency and media company that also owns the UFC and WWE.. to handle their global content and media strategy.

WME Sports & IMG Media hipped the Big XII to the realities of the current media landscape... the struggles facing the TV business across network/cable/streaming, a shrinking media rights fees pie, looming rights negotiations for multiple pro & college leagues and properties etc... and pushed Brett Yormark to get his media rights deal done early.

By cutting the line and locking in their media rights package a year ahead of schedule, the Big XII not only secured their future, they also knee capped George Kliavkoff and the Pac-12 in multiple ways.

The Big XII deal 1) set the market, 2) shrunk the available pool of buyers 3) gobbled up a large portion of the available media rights $$$ 4) staked a claim to the best remaining broadcast real estate and televison windows.

Kliavkoff never knew what hit him.

UVA is on par with Cal in terms of football and basketball? Virginia won a national championship in basketball in 2019 and played in the Orange Bowl the same year. Top flight academics and the state of Virginia is also coveted by the B1G and SEC.

UNC doesnt "suck at everything else". Blue blood in basketball and generally Top 25 football. good in most other sports, and the state of North Carolina is also coveted by B1G/SEC.

They can't be all that good if we beat em twice!

Sounds like GK went to a bar fight with a knife instead of a gun. Endeavor are also cutthroat which one sees in how quickly Yomark moved. Gotta respect that he moved with conviction. Super sad it's crippling my favorite team and finishing off the B1G hit job on west coast college sports. The $70M bail out on P12N is salt in the wound. The mismanagement from Scott's tenure qualifies for malpractice.

All message board hyperbole aside, is this really how you think business works?

If Georgie made absurd demands, they could easily have cut him off and not bothered to re-engage.
I have no idea what went on with the negotiations, but there are only 5 "power conferences" and I think it's unlikely that a network would not bid for one that they otherwise would want based on not liking the commissioner.
No one is saying they didn't bid, just that they may have walked away because Georgie asked for way too much.

If you offered $1 million for a house that the market widely believes is worth $1 million or less, and the seller repeatedly tells you he won't take less than $2 million, you'd tell him goodbye and not come back.

The report is that they refused to deal, that Fox never made any offer at all.

Probably zero truth to that, but given the current state of things, those four schools would happily take $25 million a year for each. Hell, let's be realistic, if it was only for the current contract with full Big Ten shares thereafter, they'd happily take $5 million a year.

$180 for 4 schools would be an average of $45 million per school, but they could offer us $35 million and we would take it in a heartbeat.

Even $100 million would do it. Get NBC to pay $100 million a year for more Big Ten games on Peacock and/or USA Network, and we'll each take $25 million. But I would bet the quoted tweet is fiction.

Didn't know about Endeavor and absolutely the right thing. Really this is a very complicated landscape where you really need to engage people who do this 24/7 for a living AND (this might be the most important thing) have access to the kind of metrics and data that are CLOSELY held by companies like Neilson and the Cable industry. 90% plus of people talking endlessly about this for a year are doing so without the core information such as the number of subscribers the NFL network has in particular markets or when various carriage fee arrangements lapes with particular cable companies. It is ALL business and very little about the gridiron.

When the Big XII/Endeavor deal was annunced it got very little attention, and I remember some snarky comments on Twitter, like it was a some kind joke that the yokel Big XII was seeking representation from a Hollywood agency. People forget that Brett Yormark is a former CEO of Roc Nation who has a long history in the sports and media business... worked for NASCAR and the Brooklyn Nets, and did some big deals for those properties.

So I finally googled Kliavkoff.

Biggest accomplishments in his career are helping MLB Advanced Media spin up and halping NBC Universal start Hulu.

Both... streaming.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/brains-behind-hulu-leaves-nbc/

So maybe that's why he can only get a streaming deal. Or only wants a streaming deal. Does anyone know what he actually did for MGM?

Then for some reason I just recalled that a Cal grad was the head of NBCUniversal. Maybe he could help Cal and the other western schools find some NBC and peacock timeslots and more importantly $$$, to help transition to the Big Ten? Well I googled him too, and it seems Jeff Shell was recently canned for an inappropriate workplace relationship. Peacock also lost 650 million in Q2, and expects a total loss of 3 billion this year. And I don't even know if the guy even cared one iota for Cal football. We may be past peak cable, but there's a glut of streaming channels out there too.

We and the Trees have been radio silent for over a year, means nothing or may mean a lot more than we currently presume.

I would be more comforted by that if Carol Christ was not so strongly in support of staying in the PAC and against going to the B1G in her public comments because I think she is sincere in her sentiments and saying those things while secretly working behind the scenes to jump ship does not seem to be in her character.

However, WIAF says she is tirelessly meeting with Cal donors, so maybe when the B1G entranced is announced she can say "I listened to the alumni" and "we have mitigated my concerns with the travel by creating a West Coast pod for the sports going to the Big 10 and by moving most of the non-revenue sports to the Big West."

The only schools that have been as silent as Cal + 'Furd are UW + UO. Silence doesn't necessarily mean bad things.

I'd rather have that than the desperate press releases from Wazzu and Oregon State reiterating their allegiance to the PAC-12 in its most precarious moment.

I thought media deals was what Klavikoff did do for a living. That's' why he was hired.

Perhaps, in the "30 For 30" episode about the demise of the Pac-12, we will learn the sad story about how the Pac-12 CEOs were duped into hiring Georgie.

Here's the first draft of that 30 For 30 episode.
