Fire Wilcox now

I want Wilcox gone as much as the next guy, but doesn't the transfer window that would open in the event of his immediate firing concern anyone? Wouldn't it be better to fire him after the last game, (hopefully) hire a new coach expeditiously after that, and take our licks in the usual transfer window in January?

Our talent level is so low that we don't have much to lose, other than JKS. Plus, this season is lost anyway, so it doesn't really matter what players we lose. We have at least two more games that are certain losses this season, and possibly three with Wilcox at the helm even if no players depart.

JKS would help land new recruits.

If you were the parent of a 4* recruit, wouldn't you know that JKS would be gone in a year or two, anyway? You can use his name, but not expect that kids will count on his being there by that time.

You sell the school on your total attributes - bicoastal exposure, real family environment, great facilities to train and develop, $$$$$ committed to hiring the best coaches, reputation for putting big stars in the league (they know who we are), chance to make Cal an up and coming program and be recognized for doing it, Superstar GM who knows FB backward and forward with contacts throughout the sport, number one academic public university, $$$$$ NIL money, for starters. See which are the kid's top three and hammer them home.

The portal rules changed so that the window now opens 5 days after the new head coach is announced. A big reason why all the programs that actually know what they're doing have dumped their deadweight coaches.

Speaking of which, wouldn't the off week be a good time to bring the hammer down, after getting mauled at L'Ville?

That's the next best time after this week. The sooner the better.

Wilsux should've been terminated years ago. As for RR and Lyons, they should've tarmacked Wilsux in San Diego after the inexcusable and embarrassing beatdown the Bears suffered. Wilsux was going to get paid his millions either way; let him pay for his own air fare back.

Best win of JW's career. He probably has to win out though, to save his job.

I am very confident, barring scandal, that Ron Rivera will not fire Justin Wilcox if he ends the year 8-4 with wins over (possibly two) ranked teams and Stanford.

If Wilcox wins the next two, I can almost guarantee he will have other HC offers. And if he does, we'd better damn well not get in the way of that as it would be an absoute best of all worlds with 10 million more to spend.

That said, I'm happy for JW tonight. The team did not play disciplined football and I do feel like a big part of that is simply because they're wound a bit tight. Pete Carroll has this squad at 8-2 probably. But Wilcox deserves to be happy. This was one of his best coached games ever. They were prepared and it was an awesome win.

I'm very proud of Wilcox for resisting his conservative urges and going for it on 4th down

Of course you will expect the players to support their HC (and this shouldn't play a role if he stays or gets canned) but I am glad Wilcox was able to share a cool moment with his players who clearly still believe in him.

At the very least you will expect them to play like hell to try to keep their HC the last 2/3 games.

You're probably right. (And there's also the possibility someone hires him away from Cal, but let's pretend that's not an option.) But I sure as heck Hope RR looks at the complete body of work and not just what Wilcox managed to achieve with Cal's weakest schedule in decades. (Never mind that a good coach takes Cal to the CFP and a competent coach goes 10-2.)

We would have to lose the next 3 games and go 6-7 for his job to even be in question.

There is a disconnect here between fans' wishes and reality.

Agree, yet under the circumstances with what was at stake, it was a bold and gutsy call all based on his trust with his OC and players. Bless him for his guts and trust in what he has worked on with the team.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

If that's the case, then RR really hasn't paid attention to Cal football under Wilcox for the past 8 years. He also would be dooming Cal football to irrelevance and relegation outside of the P2 come the next realignment.

I would rather at this point spend the $10 million Wilcox buyout on WRs, OLs and RBs for next year if JW can retain JKS.

Regardless of where many in the fan base stand, the team clearly hasn't quit on JW, this is what RR would be paying attention to right now, as opposed to what happened several years ago.
