bears win the road opener in las vegas last nite with true freshie elon butler hitting a bomb to the strip, gotta love the home run celebration tunnel after dingers

yeah sports r just a ******* game at the day & player's coaches know that special teams play with relentless intensity & team bonding happiness that extends with love further afar from planet earth

yeah one of the monster's bucket items got knocked off the list that nite sitting o the floor at madison square garden like spike lee sitting next to roberta martin (and her 2 remarkable sons) & a bunch of obnoxious as **** wall street bros (ironically which is who taylor is mostly dating these days in nyc) & then walking on the floor repping my cal lid (bottom left of the screen at the 10 second mark as sammy singer dribbles out the clock) in a moment of a love

It would be a very good guess that Scherbenske was that coach. Hicks is an interesting player. He is an adequate 3 pt shooter but is very adept at getting to the FT line. Decent defender and rebounder. Would be a nice fit in a Madsen uptempo offense that utilizes excellent floor spacing.

6956, in speaking with nba scouts (one of my clients is a nba organization) they view player evaluation metrics way differently than fans, a key concept in scouting reports is "separation"

freddy hicks can create separation...separation means defenders gotta foul you when you get a step on them, it also means you don't allow offensive players to get a step on you while playing lockdown d

fun fact: what player in college basketball last season got to the free throw line the most times in a single game???

answer: that would be cal targeted priority recruit freddy hicks who got to the free throw line 28 times vs belmont on november 18th, the season 75.3% free throw shooter made 18 of those fts

yeah shocky is a big fan of freddy's game/skillset along with his impressive academic portfolio (kudos to his parents jennifer & freddy sr), hopefully he wanna develop a yoga/meditation practice in berkeley along with newcomers jalen & fardaws kinda like my last yoga buddy jaylen brown (who credits me/yoga for his unbreakable ability to withstand injuries en route to his next nba supermax contract of $290,000,000+)

In 40+ years of following Cal Basketball, I thought I'd heard of every "tomato can school" in the country (as we would desperately try to pad our non-conference record). Not sure how I missed the Tarleton State Texans, outta Stephenville. Odd fact (if you live in the Bay Area): Their women's team is the "TexAnns", I kid you not.

Adding to the Shockster's explanation of 'separation' offensively is creating space between yourself and your defender to have a clean shot. Good ball handling, quick change of direction and change of speed, step-backs, cutting, use of screens, and getting your defender off balance are common ways to get separation.

Below video of the master of seperation ....Steph Curry ... watch how he changes directions, fakes defenders with hesitation moves, and gets a ton of space on 'step-backs'

on the other hand in my travels often meet guys like u that tell me that their club/course is a "really great golf course, should be in the top 100" which is inaccurate about 99%+ of the time...the monster just smiles at them, it's not worth my time to tryna educate them otherwise

jermarl baker's official visit to berkeley circa 2016 is reported as follows by cal's monster class:
https://bearinsider.com/forums/8/topics/28431/33

it's 5:30 pm at haas pavilion & unlike the crooked azz free throw shooting cal basketball team shocky is practicing his free throws at the north basket at haas pavilion while coach jones is playing horse at the south basket with one of the smooth shooting dads while other coaches walk in & out of newell court

at 5:40 pm the horse game at the other end of the court concludes with handshakes & fist bumps

at 5:45 pm juhwan harris dyson & jemarl baker enter haas pavilion in jeans & t-shirts & start shooting around at the south basket...this is my 1st time viewing them & both appear to actually be their reported 6'4" heights...at one point juhwan's ball rolls down to my end of my court & i'm tempted to ask him "where you live?" to see if he will point at the berkeley hills but don't do that, recruits & donors can never interact, the cal basketball program is a clean program that does things the right way so i keep my mouth shut...a couple of times i catch them watching me as i'm watching them

*****juhwan harris dyson is a freak athlete with a high motor...the spider fly moves effortlessly with tremendous length, he will be a lockdown pac 12 defender...he is only 16 years old & is coltish in appearance, he will become an absolute beast in coach christopher's world class s&c program...juhwan's perimeter shot is inconsistent at this time, he falls back (not vertical) a bit when shooting the 3 pointer, coach webster will definitely coach him up on his form

*****jemarl baker is draining 3 pointers a couple of feet behind the college 3 point line, he literally has nba range right ******* now...i got goosebumps watching him stroke one moneyball 3 pointer after another, his shooting form is steph like with elevation & balance along with a consistent release point...cal fans are gonna love watching jemarl let it fly, the ball soars thru the haas airspace with a perfect arc before softly dropping thru the rim...physically baker is not ready to defend elite pac 12 2s like tyler dorsey of oregon & allonzo trier of arizona as he would be abused at the point of attack with his skinny frame in the bears man on man d scheme, gaining strength along with good weight will be a priority in baker's development into an all pac 12 player/all american candidate

at 6:00 pm juhwan & jemarl along with their parents & families, the cal staff (including roberta martin) head out to catch golf carts aka the uber helicopter up to memorial stadium for the 7:30 pm kick off...coach martin comes over to ask what's up but i know he's only probably doing it because roberta told him to be nice to me for a change

yeah, the california golden bears were dead last in the pac 12 in free throws so the shockster stayed behind to shoot more free throws in an empty haas pavilion with the basketball echoing on the floor, not ever gonna be outworked that's for sure...haas pavilion is my palace, where is your palace?

couple of tidbits:

*****there is a program awareness/point of emphasis that the offense "needs to run thru ivan" this season, lob/entry passes to all the bigs including kam & the king should be more common this season than the unicorn sightings last season

*****jabari bird has had a "tremendous summer" & is ready to take the next step forward for an outstanding senior season & show nba scouts he got a motor that don't turn off

*****charlie moore is "tough", "moves like a waterbug", "an absolute game changer" & is "shifty with amazing changes in direction" with a high basketball iq...keep hearing comparisons to tyler ulis

*****marcus lee is "a tremendous addition" to the program with his kentucky work ethic, he's making young ivee a better player

cal's all the way up class (2017)#

yeah jermarl baker wuz a mcdonalds all american verbal commit (later flipped to kentucky, arizona & wake forest) & frenchman olivier sarr wuz a silent commit (later flipped to wake forest & kentucky), dumb azzs will repeat their uninformed false narrative that coach martin left the cupboard empty but the reality is that we wuz reloading in berkeley with the nation's #1 class with kentucky transfer marcus lee, the porter brothers (michael porter jr wuz the #1 ranked player in the 2017 class) along with jemarl & olivier, none of these guys wanted to play for wyking

jemarl's shooting stroke is 100% poetry, it's got pure shooting mechanics & flow better than anybody on the bears roster since cal's monster class & now he's in the transfer portal with 1 year of remaining eligibility

dumb ***** (easy to spot, they intentionally misspell cuonzo's name like a racist) will tell u baker never reached his potential but they fail to realize that if coach martin & his team (which includes me as the director of recruiting/gameday energy, that's why i wuz shooting baskets alone on the opposite end of haas on his official visit) had stayed the course jemarl would've balled out in berkeley & imho been an all american

jemarl's development has been hindered by a series of injuries (note my comment above re: his "skinny frame"), coach nicodemus christopher (who believes in the value of yoga/meditation unlike football s&c coach brian johnson, our yoga battles with jaylen brown wuz epic ) would've gotten his body nba strong/flexible like he did with jaylen, the bird & t-wall

jermarl baker is the real deal & if u ask him where he live, he's gonna point to the hills

jemarl to new mexico, wish him nothing but the best in his hoop dreams

exclusive monster 2023/2024 mark madsen roster construction plan:

the ncca allows 13 schollys for men's basketball, last season the roster wuz as follows with new 2023 players in special font:

guards:
devin askew (not a true point guard, coach cal recruited him to kentucky as a 2)
joel brown (in graduate transfer portal, haas biz ad degree)
dejuan clayton (outta eligibility but aarp membership is in his future plans)
jarred hyder (in graduate transfer portal, legal studies degree)
rodney brown (2023 recommitment sharpshooter, alan crabbe is the cal player comparison)
jalen cone (2023 grad transfer from northern arizona, gotta lotta strawberry on his jam, impact player with potential nba upside)

wings:
grant newell (the future of cal basketball)
jalen celestine (apparently healthy & ready to growl again)
sam alajiki (transfer portal to rice)
obinna anyanwu (in transfer portal)
monty bowser (how do u shoot 92.6% on free throws & 27.3% on 3 pointers?)
marsalis roberson (in transfer portal)

posts:
lars thieman (graduate transfer portal to loyola marymount, nutrition science major)
kuany kuany (in graduate transfer portal, sociology major)
nd okafor (huge athletic upside)
devin curtis (2023 recommitment bouncy post gotta live in the weight room & eat 5 meals a day)
fardaws "big maple" aimaq (2023 grad transfer from texas tech/utah valley, impact player with potential nba upside)

right now coach masden got 5 returning players & 4 2023 recruits for a total of 9 players

the bears got (unlike the last 6 seasons) got 5 legit hoopers/starters than will play big minutes, 2 huge upside guys in rodney brown & nd okafor & 2 developmental guys in monty bowser & devin curtis

this team could win 18+ games next season with this roster, coach madsen is constructing a championship basketball program in berkeley, need another impact transfer player/junior college standout or two to bust thru the roof to a 2023 monster dream season

Yes will be moving on, strictly due to reduced playing time. Joel absolutely sees a huge morale change with the players staying and the workouts have been a marked improvement in his words. The assistants are allowed to be directly involved (under Fox - he literally lead most every drill and the assistants would rarely break in/correct/lead a drill etc. Had the new staff been here earlier, Joel would have stayed. With the new staff likely having 4 combo guards, the outcome would be 10 minutes/game+- and Joel wants to go where its a competitive team and He can get 25+ minutes/game. Iona, Buffalo, Toledo at this point, programs that He is most interested in (knows either key staff member/coach or players there). Joel also likes the strength and conditioning program much better than the previous training regimen. Said drills/fitness direction much better suited to actual game play. Since its his last season, and PT is key, its the reason for Him moving on - otherwise He would be staying as He does believe the future will be very good under the new staff. Personally JB is a special person and gave his all to the program - wish him the absolute best in developing his game to allow him success in playing professionally, be it overseas or wherever.
