Dang, looks like he's getting some interest from some pretty big players too
2024 forward Noah Boyed, a 7-footer from McCook community college is receiving plenty of looks right now. From St Lucia in the Caribbean. Boyed is playing in Julyβs JA48 in Houston. Plenty of schools in line to watch Boyed

Other teams just letting Madsen so do the research and then swooping in with more NIL money as soon as we show interest?
7'0" post players with athleticsm do not grow on trees. He is not a Madsen discovery, but his interest may get some other programs to look harder at Boyed than before. Programs are aware of how Bandoago developed under Madsen and will be intrigued by his potential. The big question for Boyed and Cal is will Boyed trust Madsen to develop him and will Cal have the NIL money to secure his commitment.
Good thing he is a 2024. If he was a now recruit Cal likely would not be able to compete with the NIL. But they now have some time to build that NIL bankroll so when it is time they are in the game.
fluidity/movement for lefty sharpshooter after injury (note leg brace)#
Great to see Celestine back on the court and moving well. During the last miserable season, he was always engaged with the team, encouraging them, dishing advice to his teammates, etc.
The thing about that leg brace is it's just practice so it's probably precautionary. We'll see if he still wears it in games, or in games later in the season.
In the video, the 5th and 6th highlight shows gives me optimism.
The first highlights were half speed layups, simple passing drills, and catch and shooting drills
the 5th highlight was a step back which he did off of his injured leg. Step backs require a sudden stop and leg power to step back. Someone who can't move well because of an injury would not even be trying that move.
the 6th highlight was a strong drive to the basket against a physical Devon. Devon bodied him on the drive but Celestine absorbed the contact and layed it in. Again, that type of play tests a players' knee
Celestine had possibly the highest potential offensively and defensively of the past teams. Hopefully this team has enough depth to not play him while fatigued, and he can capture his potential
Celestine = Cal OG
He is getting his game/fitness back and his shot is very good. JC is not yet 100% though steadily getting stronger. In the "way too early" PT projection (only limited on court Coaches teaching /to 4 hrs/week - rest is individual and team organized p/u etc) Jalen Cone, Keonte, J Tyson, Grant and Daws are the current players with the edge. JC and Devin are both in "improving health condition" and would not start "today". The rotation after the first 5 would be Devin(likely at the 2), Meadows(pt back up), JC and then ND (to spell Daws) Unlikely the remaining 3 have an impact this season (baring injury opportunities) However RB as a freshman has been impressing the upperclassmen with his agressiveness and not shying away from challenging guys offensively. However a lot will develop over the next 3 1/2 months, so PT while fun to surmise, is still mainly guessing. Jalen Cone is going to be fun to watch and Keonte brings length and shooting. Really excited for the upcoming season!
hoops, 100% agreed re: jalen celestine, he's got a smooth stroke & got the potential to score at all 3 levels...u make a great point about his gameday engagement, it wuz clear that multiple players were not even participating during time outs last season, they wuz checked out (kinda like the fanbase)
4th gen, appreciate the current summertime depth chart breakdown, ur the #1 insider for the coach madsen turnaround
to summarize, u appear to be indicating the current starting line up would be:
jalen cone at the 1 (will the 2 trapped in a 1 body take the strawberry outta the jam and make his teammates better with distribution/facilitation & build his next level market value?) keonte kennedy at the 2 (the most underrated player on the roster, microwave shooting skillz with length to defend) jaylon tyson at the 3 (plays physical with a strong all around game but no exceptional nba level skillz at this time in his development) grant newell at the 4 (the future of cal basketball is gonna find out that it's a lot easier to stuff stats in garbage time losing blowouts than in the middle of the 2nd half of a tied game with arizona in tuscon) fardaws aimaq at the 5 (mobile big man with an exceptional shooting touch, can he showcase to nba scouts greater +1 athleticism & durable season long health?)
rehabbing jalen celestine & devin askew (recruited by coach cal back in the day to kentucky, the son of a berkeley grad medical doctor moms gotta opportunity with improved coaching to realize that monster potential upside) along with mike meadows (like his confident **** you up swagger that wuz lacking on last season's roster) would be the 1st 3 guys off the bench
rodney brown (player comparison would be a less developed alan crabbe at the same time as true freshmen), nd okafor (gotta lotta upside as the daws back up, coach mad dog could be the best mentor of his life if he's 100% engaged in the process), devin curtis (daily s&c work along with protein style burgers from in & out is gonna be necessary to build up the skinny frame of the bouncy big) & coach lou richie's dragon monty bowser (gotta work on his crooked azz shooting mechanics) are all in development mode but could breakout during the upcoming season
randy, any additional thoughts/changes to this depth chart conversation?
https://instagr.am/p/BqtJdkZBA5t it's pretty clear that other than actively engaged coach mad dog that's the staff's only elite/impact recruiter at this time is matt scherbenske who is the only coach with any prior berkeley affiliation (matt worked with coach montgomery back in the day)...matt wuz the lead recruiter on 2023 transfers jaylon tyson & fardaws aimaq & is the lead recruiter on multiple 2024 key prospects such as eric freeny &aiden sherrell who got an opportunity (that does not exist at places like westwood) to come in a be a go to starter as a true freshman...hopefully some of other coaches will gain traction with 2024 & 2025 prospects in the near future, honestly wuz surpassing that mark didn't hire coaches with past cal ties (realize he tried with rome but that family considerations blew up that deal)
the current 2023 roster of 12 scholly players is well situated for an exciting turnaround season but 2024 recruiting success will be the key to building a stronger platform of sustainable success moving forward into the future
last thought, just winning games will not create fan interest or sell out haas like it did during the cal's monster class era which successfully engaged new younger fans...allowing the students to attend games free like they do at san diego state against the wishes of obstructionist bureaucrat markeisha everrett needs to happen in order to establish gameday attendance patterns for students who are future season tix buyers/floor seat donors...everrett has also failed to implement any effective tix sales campaigns that target bay area basketball fans (particularuly those without any berkeley affiliations) & families than cannot afford golden state warrior tixs, cal basketball is a value play compared to the nba...recruiting an asian walk on that can ball out like brendan glapion would also be a wise move to engage a student population that is predominantly of asian descent
the magic of cal basketball (requires relentless recruiting & younger new fanbase energy)#
grant newell (the future of cal basketball is rising to the next level of legit talent competition in berkeley) schooling the true freshman devin curtis (looking more physically solid that when the monster saw him on the sidelines at memorial stadium on a fall gameday during his official visit with his moms, still got a ways to go but body development progress is obvious)
final possession game simulation work (do u got ice in ur veins?)#
with all the new people in the basketball offices these days here are links to cal's monster class which is the most read thread in the history of college basketball message boards & wuz read daily by thousands of cal basketball fans (which contributed to the almost 11,000 average gameday attendance) & multiple mcdonalds all americans during high school including jaylen brown

I'm worried about Curtis, he could not have been more wobbly if he was on skates

he'll only be playing in blow outs this year so no need to worry.
shocky's yoga buddy is gonna paid with the largest contract in the history of the nba....yeah $304,000,000 is the end game for building generational wealth via cal's monster class, together we fell in the sun
as a stinson beach high school grad this is shocky's favorite hiking trail on planet earth & on the backside of mt tam on the glorious walk down to the shimmering pacific ocean back in the day he got his 1st kiss (lots of tongue) of his life that did not involve a doggy
the university of california, berkeley=#1 ranked public university in the world (for those that flip the flyer attire that females desire)
penn transfer gus larson will be a walk on for the upcoming season, 6'10" 210 lbs larson got the most upside of any walk on during the last 10 years of cal basketball as a skilled big that just needs to put it all together on the court with improved strength to explosively pound inside without injures to complement his fluid perimeter shooting stroke
Love the Muir Woods video -- great video by the Cal Athletic department. I love that the team was out there bonding (they gotta a lot of bonding and gelling to do) and it was fun to get a few brief snippets of the personalities of some of the players.
In the old days we had several years to get to know the players as they aged through the program. It's different now with the transfer portal, especially when you need to re-tool a 3-win team.
So now it's kind of like Christmas day -- we sign a bunch of players and as fans we are excited when each one signs. Then, we get to check out each of our presents as Christmas day goes on...we don't know exactly how all the new toys work just yet, but we're getting to know them, and this is also fun. I don't know if that analogy is a stretch, but I do know that I will be enjoying getting to know our new players and I'll especially enjoy getting to see what they can do on the court.
I can't fully express how happy I am to be engaged with Cal basketball in July. When was the last time that happened?...

cal is a yoga/meditation school
So, are you helping the NIL folks with building an expanded relationship with Brown? I know you won't ask him about the practice facility until Knowlton is gone, or is it your understanding that he is already in on that?
mb, multiple mcdonalds all americans all read cal's monster class daily when they wuz in high school at this then inclusive site that could be read for free by recruits, their friends & families along with potentially thousands of new cal basketball fans particularly those without any berkeley affiliations...that biz model has changed to a premium deal & the millions of views for cal's monster class are all in the rearview mirror now
but i've reached out to share/potentially reengage my energy for this program & will await feedback...but no the monster has not assisted with any nil or recruiting efforts for the basketball program & jaylen is not involved with any practice facility fundraising at this time
Shocky, did you just report on your Growls OL thread that Mike Meadows is leaving in search of better pastures? If so, the silver lining to that clous might be that he saw that the other guards on the roster are pretty good and he might be struggling for PT.
This is a key week for grad transfers in football and basketball: Right before classes start, they can still have a change of heart.
mike meadows is now in the transfer portal, this has nothing to do with any conference **** but rather the changing direction of semi pro college athletics with hired players that really don't got any academic goals (jack plummer's biological dad tole me that the cert program required about an hour+ a day for his son who wuz 100% focused on his fb development) at the #1 ranked public university in the world plus competing skools still making nil offers (ncca oversite is as absentee as the athletic director) even after meadows wuz on campus in berkeley (this is an era of unlimited collegiate free agency)...mikey wanna get buckets & a lotta playing time that is realistically not available to him in berkeley during the upcoming season with a stacked roster of combo shooting guards/wings that can flat out (unlike last season) shoot the basketball including true freshman standout rodney brown (the player comparison is alan crabbe)

Hear ya, but the players 6-12 make practice more challenging for 1-5....This is a loss however much whip cream you spray on it.

I doubt anyone wanted Meadows to leave, but if he went to practice, saw the developing talent around him at his position, and saw the writing on the wall in regard to playing time, then that could mean a net positive for Cal even with the loss of a solid practice player.

He got a better offer: $$$
That's it. No more, no less.
Doubtful. If that were the case we would know where he landed.
