Interesting new info Bear Devil. So, would Jenna be a mid year transfer, or part of the Fall Dream Team class? I think Marina's conversion times were better than Jenna's, so I'm wondering how the transition would be. Any breaststroke help would be a welcome addition, however.
She same age as Missy Franklin, so would she have 4 yrs to swim? Thinking only if she is a mid year trfr.

Looks like our heart-pounding rollercoaster ride isn't quite over yet on the women's side of the recruiting lol. Definitely look forward to finding out who #jenna is (good catch there BearDevil), and what she can bring to an already pretty stacked table.

Teri was already a veritable legend in the annals of the top swimming coaches before this round of recruiting, but her latest Abbey/Kathleen/Katie/Amy coup is truly a testimony to how much these elite student-athletes look up to her and want to be part of her & the Cal family! :acclaim:

What's more, our 2015 dream class are exceptional not only by virtue of their immediate impact as scorers in their freshman years, but also by their fierce potential to develop into fine ambassadors for Team USA on the world stage - as high schoolers, Abbey, Kathleen & Katie have already secured spots on the Senior National Team for the biggest aquatics competition there is which isn't named the Olympics (2015 World Championships in Kazan), with Amy (alongside Kathleen & Abbey) poised to represent our country at the Short Course World Champs in Doha next month...

Abbey's got a full ride anywhere she wants and every coach would take her over Tetzloff.

Haven't been able to verify it yet, but she's the only "Jenna" in the collegeswimming database that could help the Bears. Piehl's been a Captain for multiple years, so she'd be in the know about recruiting. Don't know enough about Finland's educational system, but it's allegedly the best in the world and many Europeans finish "high school" at 19. Don't know if Teri has the money unless Batchelor bailed on Cal at the start of the semester rather than having her scholarship money adjusted at the end of last season. Bears could use Jenna in 2105 or 2016. An additional high-end breaststroker would allow Baker to swim her best events individually and on the medley relays. We'll see how it all plays out.

While Finland Jenna would be an Oskisend, Palo Alto's Jenna Campbell of Gunn High (Acker's alma mater) and PASA (Acker, Grima, Cheng, Liv Jensen, Colleen Fotsch) is the Jenna in question. Sorry for the delusional confusion.

PASA Middle-Distance Freestyler Jennifer Campbell Signs to Cal

The focus of the Cal Golden Bears' women's recruiting class is centered around the fact that they have signed four out of the top five ranked recruits in the country. Flying more under-the-radar, though, was the addition of one of the best pure middle-distance freestylers in the country, Jennifer Campbell, who is also an NCAA-qualifying-caliber swimmer.

Campbell will serve as a replacement for the soon-to-be-graduated Cal seniors Catherine Breed and Caroline Piehl, especially in supporting the Cal 800 free relay. Though she's not quite as good as Breed in the mile, she's a great match to Piehl as a very good 100-500 freestyler and an above-average butterflier as well.

Campbell's best times in yards:
50 free 23.44
100 free 50.57
200 free 1:46.35
500 free 4:49.73
100 fly 55.42
200 fly 1:59.02

Campbell has also been 2:02.21 in the 200 meter freestyle. That time was done at the 2014 Santa Clara Grand Prix, and therefore is just outside of the Olympic Trials qualifying period, but if she repeats the time next summer she'll be qualified for Omaha.

The Cal women won the 800 free relay at NCAA's last season with four underclassmen, but two of them (Piehl and Missy Franklin) will be out of eligibility by the time Campbell arrives on campus. That should leave her in the position to contribute immediately to Cal's relay at the NCAA level, though even among her classmates there will be big competition for those spots.

Among the 5 swimming signees so far, in the 200 free:
Campbell 1:46.35
Kathleen Baker 1:43.61
Abbey Weitzeil 1:45.49
Amy Bilquist 1:47.44 (2:00.6 in long course)
Katie McLaughlin 1:44.66

What this now gives to Cal coach Teri McKeever is a luxury she's enjoyed for years: she has the opportunity to use any number of different combinations in this 800 free relay and prevent any of her stars from becoming overloaded with races at NCAA's without sacrificing points.

Cal Signs USA Diving Nationals Finalist Phoebe Lamay

http://swimswam.com/cal-signs-usa-diving-nationals-finalist-phoebe-lamay/

Lamay, who was 8th at the 2014 USA Diving National Championships on the 1-meter, is one of the top American diving recruits in the class.

She was the 2014 Texas High School state runner-up on the 1-meter, placing only behind San Antonio star freshman Sine Scribbick.

Lamay's focus on the springboard makes her a good fit for Cal, who doesn't have diving platforms of their own until their new aquatics facility, with no groundbreaking date set, opens. Of course, Cal's All-American diver the last two seasons has been Kahley Rowell, a platform specialist, meaning that if Lamay wouldn't be left-to-dry if she and the Cal coaches decided to return her to the platform as a collegian.

BERKELEY - Four of the top five recruits in the country, including a trio of U.S. National team members who will compete at the 2015 World Championships, highlight a six-member California women's swimming & diving recruiting class announced Thursday. Joining the Golden Bears for the 2015-16 season are Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist, Jennifer Campbell, Katie McLaughlin, Phoebe Lamay and Abbey Weitzeil.

"I'm really excited about this class because each of them can contribute in multiple events," head coach Teri McKeever said. "They're young, enthusiastic and passionate. Most importantly, I think they're the right fit with their personalities and their academics. What they were looking for and what we were looking for definitely matched."

Baker, in the 100-meter backstroke, McLaughlin, in the 200-meter butterfly, and Weitzeil in the 400-meter free relay, will represent Team USA at the World Championships next summer in Kazan, Russia. All three also swam at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia, the top international competition of 2014, earlier this year. Bilquist, meanwhile, captured five total medals, including four gold, at the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Championships. Campbell is a local product out of Palo Alto who is a two-time section champion in the 200-yard fly, and Lamay finished eighth on the 1-meter springboard at the 2014 national diving championships.

According to swimswam.com, Weitzeil is considered the nation's No. 2 recruit, with Baker No. 3, McLaughlin No. 4 and Bilquist No. 5.

Baker, from Winston-Salem, N.C., who swims for SwimMAC Carolina, was the runner up in the 200 back at the 2014 National Championships. She also took fourth in the 100 back at the meet and went on to place ninth in the event at Pan Pacs. In addition to her spot on the U.S. team at the upcoming World Championships, she has been selected to compete in the 50, 100 and 200 back at the 2014 short-course World Championships in Qatar.

Bilquist returned home to Carmel, Ind., and the Carmel Swim Club earlier this year with gold medals in the 50 free, 100 back, and 800 free and 400 medley relays, plus a silver in the 400 free relay, from the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. She will also be on the U.S. squad at the 2014 short-course world meet in the 50 and 100 back.

McLaughlin, from Dana Point, Calif., earned a bronze medal in the 200 fly while also finishing fourth in the 100 fly at Pan Pacs last summer. A four-time medalist at the 2013 World Junior Championships, she also won the 100 and 200 fly at the '13 Junior National Meet. In addition, McLaughlin broke the national high school record in the 100-yard fly at the 2014 CIF Championships.

Weitzeil hails from Saugus, Calif., and will come to Cal after earning a silver medal as part of the 400-meter relay at Pan Pacs. She was a finalist in both the 50 and 100 free at the 2014 National Championships, setting a 17-18 national age-group record during her fifth-place finish in the 50 free (24.91). In addition, she earned a pair of medals on relays at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Dubai.

"Taking part in international meets helps them gain a lot of confidence that they'll bring to our program," McKeever said. "It means we have more people that are at and striving for that level of achievement, which I think elevates our whole team. When you have the opportunity to compete and meet people from all over the world that are the best of the best, it raises their game. I think that trickles down to all of us."

Campbell competed in seven different events at the 2014 Junior National meet, including the 100, 200 and 400 free and 100 fly and helped Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics to top-three finishes in the 400 free and 800 free relay. She comes to Cal from the same club program that also produced current Bears Rachael Acker, Camille Cheng and Alicia Grima.

"We've had really good success with swimmers from PASA, and they have a fantastic program," McKeever said. "You know that you're getting a great student-athlete."

From Houston, Texas, Lamay excels on the 1- and 3-meter boards, as well as in synchronized diving, where she placed ninth on 3-meter at the 2014 national championships (with partner and Cal sophomore Anne Kastler) and 13th on 3-meter at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

With the addition of McLaughlin, Baker and Weitzeil, six of the 25 members of the U.S. team for the 2015 World Championships will have Cal ties, a roster that will also feature junior Rachel Bootsma, sophomore Missy Franklin and freshman Cierra Runge. In addition, five Bears will be on the World University Games squad Bootsma, senior Melanie Klaren, sophomore Celina Li, junior Elizabeth Pelton and Weitzeil.

As a team, Cal has won three of the last six NCAA Championships and has placed among the top three in the nation each of the past six years. Golden Bears swimmers have accumulated 40 Olympic medals, 54 individual or relay national titles, and 10 Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year awards.

For reference, here are the SCY stats for our studly baby :bear: recruits who are in the Top 10, as per this Swimswam article from back in June 2014:

http://swimswam.com/top-10-recruiting-rankings-girls-high-school-class-2015/

A few of these best times will no doubt be further lowered in the next few months!

However, a sobering note to balance all our wild celebrations here... A substantial number of young women swimmers hit their PBs in HS, and seem to be challenged when it comes to further improving these top times of theirs once they hit college, for a variety of reasons.

OTOH, Amy appears to be on an upward trajectory based on her consistent progress since the age of 13 (her tall, lanky frame doesn't hurt either She has also started to bulk up with increased dryland training which will help with her sprints). Abbey, Kathleen & Katie also have tons of undeveloped potential, and their recent participation at the highest international tier of the sport this year (Pan Pacs) will surely empower them with quite a bit of confidence.

For reference, here are the results for NCs in March. Fun to compare our recruits' times to see how high they hypothetically could have placed in finals, how they may have impacted on our relays if slotted in (would have to subtract about half a second from their times to allow for the flying start on the 2nd-4th legs), and how many potential points they could have contributed to Cal whilst still in their Junior year of High School

Think Teri wants to bracket/complement Cat Ladd (100/200 free) and Jenna (200/500 free). Low risk initial investment and high reward if either becomes a relay swimmer(400 or 800 free) or better. Anything above that (NCAA scorer) is gravy and would be rewarded accordingly. Don't know if Teri plans out as far as Durden does, but the original plan was probably to have Abi Speers (50/100) on the front end of that freestyle ladder.

Also always good to have ties to PASA for future recruits.

Another bonus of adding Amy is that it builds a bridge to the next generation of US national swimmers. Kathleen, Katie, and that chick who foolishly went to the farm bonded as teammates on the junior national team. Kathleen and Katie were on the senior national team while Amy was on the junior national team this Summer. Other than Beccca Mann, the next generation of US stars were Amy's teammates: Katie Drabot, Stanzi Mosely, Allie Szekely, Sierra Schmidt, and Madison Homovich. Might as well get them into the pipeline now.

Not that conversant with their short course metrics, but I'd also consider the likes of Meghan Small, Cassidy Bayer, Courtney Harnish & Isabella Rongione who all appear to have considerable potential. Not to neglect Emily Eastin, Courtney Mykkanen, and Alyssa Marsh either as had been brought up by BearDevil - esp if we want to pile on some serious backstroking depth

...speaking of Hannah Kukurugya, Bears probably got a bit of a break today with Ally Tetzloff, Hannah's high school and club teammate, signing with Auburn. With sincere apologies to Alyssa and David Marsh, Cal and Auburn don't have much cross over for recruits. Tetzlofff to Texas would have been a lot more problematic for the Bears. Auburn, 'Zona, and Florida will be the biggest benefactors of Georgia's demise. Georgia put out a press release: Burns signed, but Haas didn't. Could still be waiting to hear Bauerle's fate or could be heading to Texas or 'SC (first half of football tonight was brutal!).

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt and/or thinking I'm somewhat clever, tedbear, but alas I am a big idiot. Got intrigued by #jenna and quickly made a ridiculous assumption. Kinda bummed that Missy may not get a ring with the Bears and thought Finnish Jenna might be a mid-year golden bullet. Started checking around and the first response from someone in the know was, "OMG, that would be a huge get for Cal". Didn't kick in that a foreign Olympian wouldn't completely relocate herself 12-18 months before the next games to a new country, coach, and culture. A different friend clued me in later and I cleaned up my earlier post, but Cal's release was already out and I realized that not only would I lose face by 'splaining it fully, I'd also look like a liar. FML! During my quixotic journey I did hear that Cole was down to the good guys and Taco Bell, so it wasn't a total loss. I really do have to figure out the proper balance of methadone and peyote to jump start my mornings.

BearDevil,

No need to worry about face; I think most of us greatly appreciate your recruiting insights, so a little optimistic speculation is fun. After I read the Finn Jenna post, my first reaction was OMG, but then I wondered where in the world the scholly money was coming from.

At any rate, I actually had some doubts that Finn Jenna would be the magic bullet given the uncertainty that a young mid-year international long course breaststroker can quickly adapt to short course yards. Marina Garcia has yet to come close to her long course to yards converted times, which were somewhat faster than the young Finn. Like you, I fear that the current team’s lack of a sprint breaststroker and more elite sprint free depth will really impact the team’s chances for another NCAA crown. It's a shame that Missy can’t stick around to swim with the “Fab Four”, since I think that package would kick-ass and take no prisoners.

I keep hoping that Marina will make the transition this year, but season to date she is posting slower times compared to last year, but that could be due to a change in training strategy. I am thinking that both Teri and Durden are pointing to the Georgia Invite in early December to get many of their swimmers qualified (with times that will stay @ top 30 through the season) so they can focus on peaking at NCAAs. We should know much more about our breaststroke depth following the meet in Athens.

Still a lot of variables, but think Georgia wins easily in 2015. Bears will slug it out with LSJU for a relatively distant second. Bears aren't going to default another relay at NCAAs and LSJU has zero relay upside (won 4 out of 5 relays in 2014). Georgia won't be terrible in 2016, but they won't be able to compete with Cal and LSJU. Seems like heresy, but I think the 2016 Bears will be stronger than the current team, especially in the relays. Hard to tell how strong LSJU's frosh outside of Simone will be and it's not a sure thing that Ledecky even swims in college next season. Like Cal's chances for another title in 2016, but would like them even more if Teri adds a scoring breaststroker and a distance swimmer via transfer or late recruiting period.

Of all the recruit interviews, enjoyed Abbey's the most. She was pretty straight forward about Cal ("dominant') and what she hopes to add ("NCAA titles"). Love well rounded recruits who are at Cal for all the right reasons (not saying Abbey isn't), but a little swagger about ass kicking is refreshing. Also pretty clear that Abbey committed to Cal sometime ago since they didn't slap her interview together in a few hours. Additional bonus points for punking 'SC with a late recruiting trip.

So does anyone know if Abbey was the aforementioned silent? I think she committed around the time that Siobhan announced she was going to Michigan, and SC and Arizona were adding to their humongous classes. It just makes sense in retrospect. If she was, the Cal swim community did a good job of not having any leaks of information. Not even BearDevil knew.

Without a doubt, Maxime will be Durden's number one target in 2016, the same way Baker was for Teri this season. Reasonable chance that Maxime will be the top-ranked recruit nationally too. In addition to Silverthorn, Celina, and Breed, he's also close friends with Ken Takahashi. 2016 recruit Erika Brown may be the next Pleasanton Seahawk to swim for the Bears. Now swims for SwimMAC (Maija/Baker). Bakersfield's Stanzi Mosely is probably higher in Teri's pecking order plus she's in-state and her 100/200 times complement Weitzeil's and Amy's 50/100 strengths better and make her a plug and play replacement for Acker.

Another Seahawk, Iris Brand, would have been in the mix for Cal any other year but 2015. Strong sprinter, but not at Abbey's and Amy's level and ended up signing with Wisconsin. Brand is faster than Jenna Campbell at 50/100, but Jenna's faster at 200 so looks like Teri wants Jenna for middle distance (200/500) and maybe swim a leg on the 800 free relay. Read her being compared to Piehl and Breed which would be a steal. Potentially very underrated.

Great job, UAC. That's a pretty exhaustive list, but only Mann, Drabot, Mosely, Szekely, Small, Eastin, Mykannen, Marsh, and Brown are 2016 recruits. I'd remove Emily Eastin and add Orinda's Maddy Murphy and Veronica Burchill (Bilquist's teammate) as potentials. Next year's going to be tough with only 4 or 5 slots (losing Pelton, Bootsma, Naze, and Acker). Unfortunately Teri still doesn't have a balanced team, so she needs to prioritize a breatstroker and another distance swimmer rather than just adding the biggest names/stars. I'd add a sprinter (Mosely or Drabot), and a backstroker (Mykkanen or Marsh).

NBAC doesn't swim too many SCY meets, so Mann doesn't have too many comparative times. Would be awesome in the 1650, 500, and either the 400 IM or 200 free, plus a leg on the 800 free relay. NABC's a big feeder to Georgia, but with their implosion and Becca's ties to Cal, Bears will definitely be in it.

Don't know enough about the next generation of breaststrokers to figure out who the best fit would be, but it's been a chronic issue for several recruiting classes and a limiting factor that still Teri has to fix. I know some here want Szekley, but her best times are basically a push with Maija's (faster in 100, slower in 200). Bears need a scorer in both breasts and a medley relay replacement for Baker would be ideal.

Drabot's an amazing swimmer and has multiple ties to Cal and LSJU, who should be the two finalists. She and Stanzi are pretty much interchangeable, but if Cal can only get one, I'd go with in-state Mosely. Adding both to Abbey and Amy would be unbelievable as the Bears would be heavy favorite in all three freestyle relays at NCAAs. Like getting an extra three years of Acker relay production.

Backstroke gets a little crazy. Without Pelton and Bootsma, Teri needs another backstroker, but she doesn't need two since she already has Baker and Bilquist and needs to backfill in breast and distance. Can't see her turning Marsh and Mykkanen down if both want to come. Eastin sisters are great girls, but Teri isn't taking Emily over Swim and Cal legacy royals. Ella would have been a good fit chemistry wise, but she doesn't have any relay upside and wasn't really needed until 2017 (no Pelton, Piehl, or Naze). Teri doesn't need another IMer in 2016 with Li, Pelton, Baker, and Naze, but she could use a 400 IMer in 2017, which makes Mann an even higher priority.

Not a bad problem to have, but there are way too many prospects chasing too few slots in the next recruiting class. Teri's really a stickler about fit and culture, but she also has to balance those against some need issues (breast and distance). Doubtful the next class will have the raw big name star power of the 2015 class and the one it replaces, but could be extremely impactful if it addresses the most pressing needs to keep the Bears on top.

I think Becca Mann would be a dream get as she should address a significant portion of Teri's distance + longer IM needs. Ms. Mann may not have swum too many recent SCY times for us to compare against, but she definitely is a beast when it comes to fearlessly tackling a bunch of back-to-back races (sort of akin to a mini Katinka Hosszu in this area!), and has represented Team USA at the senior & international level in the distance events + open water. One of my nieces lives in the extraordinarily quaint town (Cedarburg) where Drabot goes to high school. My niece is a Wisconsin grad and was an age group swimmer growing up. We were trash texting during the Cal/UW meet and, as usual, Uncle BD crushed her. Pretty sure she cried nasally tears like a Midwesterner, but I'm also pretty sure I'm still getting a Drink Wisconsibly shirt for Xmas. UW has a good swimming program and Madison's an awesome college town, but doubt Drabot becomes a Badger. Nelson, on the other hand, goes to high school 30 minutes from Madison and likely swims for UW. There's a ton of state loyalty in Wisconsin and everybody roots for the Badgers, Packers, and Brewers. While it's rare that states like Wisconsin and Virginia have two top 5 recruits in the same recruiting class, I doubt that both leave the state for college like Seliskar and presumably Haas did this year. Staying home in the Old Dominion went out of fashion with Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson.

My heart's with Teri because she wins in an old fashioned "I'd like to teach the world to sing" way, but my head's with Durden for his balanced teams. Nelson would ordinarily be an excellent get, but Teri will still have Katie, Noemie, Mau, Li, and Osman in 2017 and needs breast, distance, and sprint(s) more than she needs an out of state flyer.

Premium breast specialists are a relatively rare commodity I believe, and finding one who can make a major contribution to a minimum of both medley relays, as well as score in both BR individuals + a 3rd event (usually 200 IM) is an even more challenging assignment!

Kathleen Baker with all her incredible versatility could become a potent tool for us next year even though breaststroke isn't her area of specialization, but would probably be best not to have to rely upon her other than for relay duty on this stroke esp with Rio coming up!. May well have to try for a killer international recruit such as Kanako or a transfer as was suggested by tedbear?

A big part of the frustration is that the lack of a competent breaststroker is perceived to be what stands between Missy and a ring(s), but that's not the entire story. 2014 needed another sprinter and a distance swimmer too and even then, they probably weren't going to catch Georgia. The 2015 team improved with Cierra and Noemie/Mau, but probably probably still doesn't have enough to catch Georgia and may not pass LSJU.

Baker's 100 breast time is more than adequate for what the Bears need on medley relays, even without a relay start. The tradeoff for Kathleen is her day 2 individual event at NCAAs: 200 free, 100 breast, or 100 back, which are all back to back. She projects as an A scorer in all three. Probably comes down to who the Bears' closest team rival for the title will be: LSJU or Georgia. LSJU will potentially have two 100 breast scorers (Haase and Poppe) and Georgia will only have one (Zhu). Bears have six potential scorers in the 200 free (Pelton, Acker, Baker, Cierra, Katie, and Weitzeil). Cierra, Abbey, and Acker don't have another possible third event, while Pelton could swim the 100 back (with Bootsma, Bilquest, and maybe Baker) and Katie could swim the 100 fly (with Noemie, Mau, Osman, and Bootsma). Just depends on how deep other teams in the hunt are in those events and who's swimming well.

While the Bears need/needed a medley breaststroker in 2014 and 2015, the problem is not nearly as acute in 2016. Baker's faster than Lilly King in the 100 breast and neither projects as a scorer in the 200 (same for LSJU's Poppe). Bears will be deep enough in the medley that Baker's best leg is breast since Bootsma, Pelton, and Amy can swim back. Teri still has to hope that Marina gets her grove back or Maija gets a lot faster in the 100 for 2015, but if not she can still use Baker on medley relays and 100 breast and hope one of Marina, Maija, and Li can score in the 200. A third event doesn't really matter for someone who can score in both breasts and both Stanzi and Drabot are more valuable than any 3 event breaststroker anyway (2 relays for the breaststroker vs at least 3 relays for both sprinters).

Baker's best 100 breast time is already good enough for 2nd place all-time at Cal (behind Leverenz) and ahead of Hardy and Stacianna Stitts (both Olympic medalists). There's really a narrow window for somebody who's an upgrade over Baker, although Kathleen would be useful in both the 200 free or the 100 back, where the Bears are already deep. Leverenz was an NCAA champ in the 200 breast, but not the 100 breast and her medley breast legs were just fine.

Hey great stuff once again, BD! Always look forward to your informed analysis & learning new things

So, some possible individual events for the dream team?

Abbey : 50 Free (Day 1) ... 200 Free (Day 2)? ... 100 Free (Day 3)
Amy : 50 Free (Day 1) ... 100 Back (Day 2) ... 100 Free or 200 Back? (Day 3)
Kathleen : 200 IM (Day 1) ... 200 Free or 100 Breast or 100 Back (Day 2) ... 200 Back (Day 3)
Katie : 100 Fly & 200 Free (Day 2) ... 200 Fly (Day 3)

Question for the experts: can one compete in all 5 relays if entered for only 2 individuals @ NCAAs?

btw BD, your ruminations on the team's weaknesses, and how our 2015 recruits may or may not address some of these issues, inspired me to look up a few stats in order to try to get a more visual picture of where we may stand next season.

Basically took the best SCY times for the new recruits + 2014 freshies + rest of team who will be there March 2016, then compared these with the 2014 NCAAs results, in order to get a sense of who could have scored last spring. Did then remove data for who had scored for Cal, how many points & in which events, who will have graduated, cutoff times to qualify for A/B finals from prelims etc. to help streamline the table below.

Obviously this simplistic, ad hoc exercise of mine comes with more than a few major caveats! This is NOT intended to attempt to seriously predict who will actually score @ 2016 NCAAs, as too many variable factors will come into play in the next 16 months or so.

Unlike BD, I had not looked at our rivals' recruits nor plotted their progress - this alone would significantly impact the distribution of points. Swimming is generally getting faster with each generation, so it will undoubtedly be tougher to score at the next edition of NCs, with a new generation of superstuds about to burst onto the scene to challenge the status quo and our expectations. The ability to swim fast in the morning heats is key at NCAAs, as you can still score even if slower in the evening - as long as you have a place in finals!

Then there's the sobering fact that many swimmers find it challenging to surpass their HS swims once they hit college. And while in college, many will end up achieving their best times for the season at other than the big meet due to a missed taper or something else. As alas happened to quite a few of the team last NCAAs.

On the other side of the coin, our incoming recruits have yet to get another taper meet under their belts before coming on campus, so we may not yet have seen their best pre-college times until their major HS/State meets in the spring. Abbey, Kathleen, Amy & Katie have all recently had a chance to represent the country in the summer at either the senior or junior level, so they should be brimming with increasing confidence, which could translate into performance improvements in the coming months. We definitely haven't seen Amy at her max potential, especially if she continues to add to her towering 6' 3" frame hehe

Well I'm rambling on, so let's get to the stats FWIW

Those who are potential A final scorers at the last NCAAs, based on their PBs (i.e. faster than the 8th placed finalist), are highlighted in bold purple. B final potential scorers (better than the 16th finalist) are in light purple.

For our current juniors, I only considered their best times achieved whilst at Cal (Boots, Liz & Celina had gone faster in certain events pre-college), and if their times had increased from their freshman to sophomore year, this would be denoted by (frosh time/soph time)...but I gave them the benefit of the doubt by considering only their faster time for placing their scoring potential position.

Noemie had only started swimming SCY since starting here, since Canada like the rest of the world other than the US holds LCM & SCM meets (meters instead of yards). Didn't feel motivated enough to search for her best SCM times and convert to SCY, so obviously she should be much, much higher...in the 100 fly for example.

Cierra hadn't raced a heck of a lot of yards either when at NBAC...

Sorry, didn't look at relays or the diving. Please let me know of any bad data so that I can update, thanks!

Wow UAC! Thanks for doing all that hard work. One thing that this all shows is our glaring weaknesses, distance and sprint breast. I think Noemi is our best sprint butterflyer, so I don't think her time reflects what she is capable of doing. And yes, it's a long ways until March of 2016.

I'd add a sprinter (Mosely or Drabot).

Spot on BD with regards to your comments on the value of Katie Drabot & Stanzi Moseley! Having those 2 studs complement Abbey & Amy on relays would indeed be incredible by the time the 2016-2017 season rolls around, reckon would outshine anything the sprint stars over at the Farm can throw at us - Manuel, Neal, Ledecky & Hu notwithstanding. My other thought/concern is that by not actively targeting Katie, the chances of her committing to LSJU would be greatly favored, which could come back and haunt us in the long run.

I've reproduced the section where she specifically mentions that Cal :cheer & Stanfurd :axe are her ideal college choices!

Good find on the article UAC. I think Katie and Alyssa Marsh should be our top two priorities for 2016. Both have that charismatic fit/team player characteristic that I think Teri looks for in a swimmer. Katie can fill in a little bit of our distance issues if she swims the 500 Free, and Alyssa would fill our need for backstroke depth, along with being versatile in the Fly and IM. It's hard to find any info on Stanzi Moseley, so if you ever find a good article, please post.

The ability to swim fast in the morning heats is key at NCAAs, as you can still score even if slower in the evening - as long as you have a place in finals!

Sorry, didn't look at relays or the diving. Please let me know of any bad data so that I can update, thanks!

Abbey's got the clearest program: 50/200/100 plus 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay. Also sets up well for Olympic Trials. She's probably not fast enough yet to make the team as top 2 in the 50, 100, or 200, but she just needs to be in the top 6 in the 100 or 200 to make the team as a relay swimmer. Like Osman and Bilquist. Abbey's stronger in the 50 and 100 than the 200. It's why Drabot and/or Stanzi would be valuable 2016 recruits for the Bears since they're stronger in the 100/200 than the 50/100 and would be better 800 free relay swimmers than 200 relay swimmers.

Amy looks like 50 free and 100 back for sure and then a choice between the 200 back or 100 free. 200 free and 400 free relays, and TBD with Bootsma and Pelton for the back legs on medley relays.

Baker's already been discussed: 200 IM, a choice of 100 breast, 200 free, or 100 back on Friday (I'm leaning toward 100 breast), and 200 back. Breast legs on both medley relays and 800 free relay. Kathleen's best ticket to Rio is either via back or as an 800 relay swimmer. Like Missy and McLaughlin, Baker probably won't swim her optimal international events in order to help the Bears at NCAAs.

Katie's got a problem since there's a conflict on Friday with the 100 fly and 200 free back to back on the same day she'll likely also swim two relays. Think she swims the 50 free, 100 fly or 200 free, and 200 fly. Fly legs on both medley relays (although there's competition from Noemie et all), and 800 free relay.

A swimmer could swim 2 individual events and 5 relays for 7 total events. Can't swim more than 3 individual events.

Up (championship finals) and downs (consolation finals) are extremely important. An NCAA championship team generally wins if they score more than 450 points. Figure around 160 points in relays (5 x 32-all relays in third), so a team like Cal (no diving) needs 290 points from individual swimming events. 290/13 events works out to 22 points per event which is an A final scorer plus a B final scorer. That's why Bears need second scorers in 100 breast (and any scorers in 200 breast) and 1650. Bears can load up in several events (200 free, both backs, both flys). Bears had 5 scorers in the 200 free last year for 47 points. Breed didn't score. Georgia was much more efficient with 3 A scorers for 43 points. Teri doesn't want to use too many swimmers in any one event if teammates are pushing each other out of the A finals or scoring altogether.

Teri isn't bumping up against the 18 swimmer/diver limits yet, but Durden already has. Since divers only count as 0.5 against the 18 cap, it behooves him to add another elite diver if Finn's as good as advertised since he's already pushed a swimmer out of NCAAs anyway.

btw, just noticed BD's latest posting on the scoring potential of our 2015 dream team, so rushing to get this post out so that I can read and glean some insightful info from his take on all of this, sorry

Stanzi Moseley had a strong first 50, leading the pack at the 50 with her split of 26.13. She tried to hold off Amy Bilqust from Carmel Swim Club, but Bilquist proved to be too much to handle on the back half of the race. Amy Bilquist got her hand on the wall to win the women's 100 freestyle with her time of 54.85. Moseley finished second at 55.04. Veronica Burchill finished third with her time of 55.89. She dropped close to 6 tenths of a second from her morning swim. After winning the C-final heat of the women's 200 backstroke, Taylor Ruck from Scottsdale Aquatic Club won the B-final of the women's 100 freestyle with her time of 55.79.

16-year-old Stanzi Moseley picked up the first national title of the night, getting just under two minutes after flirting with that barrier this morning. Moseley, our of Roadrunner Aquatics in California, went 1:59.88, her lifetime-best and first time sub-two minutes.

Moseley went out fast, as she's known for, hitting the pad at 57.35 to her feet at the 100 turn. She dropped off some in the back half, but held off top challenger Taylor Ruck down the stretch. Ruck outsplit Moseley by over a second on the last 50, but the Roadrunner had built too big a lead to be overome. Ruck wound up at 2:00.14, still an awfully good time for the 14-year-old from Scottsdale (Arizona).

Pleasanton's Erika Brown went out with Moseley at the start, blasting a 57.7 on the opening 50 to sit second. She fell victim to Ruck's last-lap charge, but still wound up third overall at 2:00.29.

Stanzi Moseley - the name's got serious flare, and her swimming isn't half bad either.

In the women's 200 free, Stanzi Moseley (3) broke through the arbitrary two-minute barrier with a 1:59.88 to win the girls' 200 free. She held a huge lead at 150 meters, but fell back on the anchor to the field. She's just 16, and is the second 16-year old to go under two minutes this year (Ledecky did so before she turned 17 earlier this year).

And by the way, Stanzi? (4) it's short for "Constanze," which is a variant of the Latin, and much more popular, name "Constance."
