Limbaugh was a hateful ***** but give him his due- probably the most influential media person of his time- literally made AM radio a thing and a Republican king maker.

I'm confused by that reasoning. Are we supposed to give Bernie Madoff "his due" due because he was the operator of the largest Ponzi scheme in world history, and the largest financial fraud in U.S. history? (Prosecutors estimated the fraud to be worth $64.8 billion).

Rush Limbaugh was a Deplorable's idea of a really wired in smart guy. The hate and disinformation he spewed to the ignorant caused real damage to The Republic. I'm sure the Capitol Insurrectionists could quote Rush, chapter and verse.
The next piece of human trash that we won't mourn when he passes is Rupert Murdoch.

This is a bad take. Do we celebrate other hateful people who succeeded in damaging this country when they die? Rush may be as responsible as any other figure for how awful our political discourse has become in this country.

Even if you ignore his "political" views, he should be castigated for his "AIDS Updates". He hurt a lot of people over the last 30 years and his legacy shouldn't be whitewashed to pretend like he was some innocent civilian. He's one of the original culture warriors. I think people are giving him his due by refusing to allow the record to ignore what he really did with his life.

Spare me the false piety. I'm not celebrating just observing. Give him his due means just that: he was very influential. You can't begin to combat something unless you understand it's success.

Rush Limbaugh, Right-Wing Radio Host, Dies at 70

Did Prescient ConcordTom start this Obituaries thread because he knew Limbaugh would be croaking pretty soon and didn't want him to have his own thread?

Limbaugh was HUGELY influential (from my perspective, hugely damaging to our society and to the nation). An amazing number of people listened to him and pretty much swallowed everything he said. And his bombastic style, bravado mixed with some humor, mocking name calling, never apologize, push the envelope about what's acceptable to say, etc. was the forerunner to Trump.

While he doesn't really deserve it, I am going to say something halfway nice about him (because he died today and it surprised me to learn it). Most people that met him when he was not playing to his audience supposedly found him to be pretty much a polite gentleman. While, sure, he was conservative, his show was a show. His schtick. He was quite aware of that fact. This was anecdotally corroborated by my most leftist of friends, who once, somewhat to his surprise, found himself dealing with Limbaugh in person (a small afternoon meeting) and in a follow-up conference call: "If you didn't know that it was Rush Limbaugh, you never would've known it was Rush Limbaugh."

The fact that he knew that what he was doing was schtick doesn't get him a pass for it, don't get me wrong.
He was really funny in the early 90's shortly after he got syndicated when his small show in Sacramento took off (yes folks, Rush Limbaugh is a California conservative success story). He had funny little songs with Bill Clinton singing the Beatles "Do You Want To Know A Secret? (I Lied to YOU)", Ross Perot singing "They're Coming to Take Me Away (Ha! Ha!), AlGore, Feminazis, etc.

Once he realized how much money he could make, he just became mean. Especially after the Supreme Court decision in Bush v Gore, where his coverage was quite good and departed from the liberal narrative about how the votes were being undercounted in Florida.
Hiring that guy to do Monday Night Football may have been a decision on par with hiring Wyking Jones as our basketball coach. Doomed to fail.

I wonder which current RWNJ talking head scoops up whatever is left of his audience?
I think Dennis Miller was on MNF but I don't remember Limbaugh being on ABC. I think he may have been on ESPN but got booted after saying something about McNabb. Dennis Miller was a disaster anyway on MNF.

Yogi - I think that's wrong. Here is a list of all MNF commentators, Limbaugh is not on the list.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Monday_Night_Football_commentators

I do remember him from ESPN Football show on Sunday nights where he said something derogatory and quickly resigned.

https://www.espn.com/gen/news/2003/1001/1628537.html

I am a big NFL fan and I do not remember ever seeing Limbaugh on MNF.

LOL no piety here. Just not going to waste my time recognizing his success given how destructive that success was for our country. He earned his infamy fair and square.

Although I think Dennis Miller is a two bit tw@t, I always respected him for this:
I once saw him interviewed. Although he and Al Franken are on polar opposites of the political spectrum, Miller said he loved Al Franken because of how kind and supportive Al was to him during their SNL days. We need more of that.
He used to be liberal until 9/11, and then became almost a bigot against Muslims. Made a hard turn to the right. But it wasn't his politics that sunk him on MNF. It was his attempt at trying to show how intelligent he was with esoteric references on a football show. Just want to watch some damn football and get Tony Romo type of high quality analysis.

The lines blurred between ABC and ESPN over the years. ESPN sounds more right.

I didn't watch him on that show, but I saw the brouhaha over the Donovan McNabb comment after the fact.

He was basically responsible for popularizing "*****your feelings." That's why whenever there's a tragedy where a lot of people die, even if they're kids, the right quickly moves on.

He paved the way for us becoming desensitized as a nation, which is why the U.S. Capitol Siege is struggling to be a major event in U.S. history.

Rush Limbaugh Should Have Stayed Jeff Christie

Quote:

Listen to "Jeff's" rollicking intro for "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing" by Stevie Wonder. The man who would become infamous as a peddler of race politics really sells Stevie's music! You can detect a trace of "America's Anchorman" in his intro for "Garden Party" by "former all-American boy turned hippie" Ricky Nelson but most of his energy is pure radio.

That makes it worse because it means he peddled hate and disinformation to the ignorant for money (est. net worth $600M). It would have been more mitigating from my perspective if he had simply been a true believer psycho.

Speaking of guys who peddle hate and disinformation
LMFAO
My favorite sports talk guy of all time, the last great Pete Franklin, was a original in the shock jock genre. He didn't descend to meanness, but he would occasionally yell during a call just to spice things up.

Fridays when he'd predict college games and play their fight songs in the background was always fun.

Tax the manufacturer, not the consumer.
Paid for by the consumer.
Same difference?

The objective is to incentivize healthy behavior (eating healthy foods) and dis-incentivize crap, not matter how tasty it might be.
We'd save money on the health care front by a mile. And people would have been quality of life in the meantime.
Oh, but FREEDOM! I can hear the catcalls now.
Sure, go ahead and eat crap. It'll just cost you more. You have the freedom to eat dirt, too.
Taste buds change, habits adjust.
