Darn it. Michael Lewis (Moneyball) lost his 19yo daughter (Berkeley High grad) in a car crash in Truckee.

Mark Eaton was so big, he made other "bigs" seem small. Biggest dude I ever saw in Harmon Gym... by far. Whoever we had on the court next to him -- and it was somebody pretty big like Michael Pitts or Mark McNamara (I forget) -- they looked shrimp-like, by comparison. Kinda like Bill Walton and Karl Malone in the pics above.

During his UCLA years, he still hadn't grown into his body. Didn't even see the court most of the game (nor did the guy behind him, haha). Cool the way he kept at it and built himself into a solid NBA player. Lesson learned: Don't give up too early on big guys. Of course, there are big guys and then there is 7-4, 300 big.

Yao with Gary "The Lilliputian" Player:

That's an amazing photo. Jeez!

My step-father took his first wife on a golfing tour of South Africa with Player (and other rich people) in the 70's.
Decades later, when we lived in DC and the US Open was held at Congressional, we went over to watch Chi Chi Rodriguez give some little show on the driving range. Player was there, and my step-dad went up to see him and was gratified when Gary said, "Oh, hi Paul".
Later he said, "he remembered me!"
My step-dad said Player was a really nice guy. The large group had enjoyed nice dinners and drinks that trip.
Nice life, eh?

That scene made NO sense in this movie.
I mean, sure, it showed the carefree-ness of where they were at - but we go from the 1800's to that? Come on. Bad period piece insertion.

I never met Mark Eaton, but a few years back our local parks and recreation department hired a guy that was 7' 5" and about 375 pounds (overweight). I saw him grocery shopping several times and it was one of the more amazing things I've ever seen. As a Game of Thrones fan, it was like meeting The Mountain in the canned soup aisle. He couldn't go more than 30 seconds without someone gawking or making a comment about his height. I didn't because I figured the poor guy would prefer to be left alone. I imagine that was how life was for Mark Eaton. I guess you get used to it, but I expect it gets old real fast.

Rip Torn, cult actor and Artie in the Larry Sanders Show dies aged 88

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/jul/10/rip-torn-cult-actor-dies-aged-88?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Rip Torn brought Da Ruckus to Norman Mailer and Dennis Hopper:

" During the filming of Norman Mailer's film Maidstone, a largely improvised production made at the height of the late-60s counterculture, Torn played Mailer's brother, and attacked Mailer for real, hitting him over the head with a hammer and then attempting to strangle him. Mailer responded by biting Torn's ear.

Torn's reputation for irascibility had already been established inside the industry after a row with Dennis Hopper during the pre-production of Easy Rider, the seminal 1969 counterculture biker movie, that led to Torn being replaced by Jack Nicholson before shooting began. The incident became more widely known after Hopper claimed on a TV talkshow in 1994 that Torn had pulled a knife on him; Torn subsequently sued, claiming that Hopper had in fact pulled the knife on him. The court found in Torn's favour, and awarded him $475,000 in damages."

And this guy was not Eaton, but an unknown giant without basketball skills?
Ouch, that's be rough to go through life that way.

Maybe he could get some acting jobs as a giant.
