Not trying to horn in on your thread-which-is-now-a-burgeoning-concept, but I am more of a text guy than a graphics guy. I was thinking of t-shirts, decorative pillows and the like, with the now-famous words from your original post:

"Please add new deaths here...
... This will also clean up the OT board a smidge.
Thank you."

Maybe, for the bumper stickers, just the first five words, otherwise folks are going to get into accidents as they get too close, trying to read everything.

Hahahaha.
Great concept proposal!

I think the shirt should include the URL, too! Maybe we can get Greg to give us a more appropriate one:

www.BearInsider.com/OffTopic/Obituaries

Somebody, please flag this post so that Greg can fulfill the request. Then we can get started on vendor pricing.

PS: you and Bearister sure are intent on slapping me with "ownership" of this thread.
But, you know, after considering my praise of findagrave, perhaps I should just OWN it!

It will be a better tribute to them over the year to be able to review, having them consolidated.
If a period of time goes by and there are no new deaths, this thread will fall down the list. A new death? Then add it here and it will pop back up to the top.

This will also clean up the OT board a smidge.
Thank you.

Here's your 2021 list so far, for starters.

Back to the somber. This IS the Obituaries thread, after all.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Franco Harris has died. He was 72.

Harris' death comes just days before the 50th anniversary of the Steelers' celebration of the "Immaculate Reception." Harris made one of the most iconic plays in NFL history on Dec. 23, 1972, against the Oakland Raiders when he swooped in and grabbed a pass from Terry Bradshaw intended for John Fuqua before it hit the ground.

Harris' son informed the AP this morning that his father passed overnight, and that the cause of death was as yet unknown.

Note: the nfl is blocking many of these links from playing embedded. But this one above is 9+ minutes of the end of that famous game and is worth watching - I had never seen it this way.

Biden connection with Harris:

" President Biden issued a statement with this remarkable personal memory:

Say the name Franco Harris and most everyone talks about the catch, the Super Bowls, and the glory he brought to the game of football. But in the fifty years we bonded as friends, I always talked about his character and compassion.
It was this week fifty years ago when my first wife and infant daughter were killed and my two young sons were badly injured in a car accident while they were out getting a Christmas tree. ...
"I rarely left my boys' bedside until they got better," Biden continued:

But one day I did to go shopping for them. When I returned, they were smiling for the first time since the accident.
Art Rooney, the generous and honorable owner of the Steelers, had flown out with a couple of players, including Franco, and the tough-as-nails Rocky Bleier. Busy with their own lives, they took the time to be with my boys, sign footballs, and then left with no publicity. A small act of kindness that meant the world to us." Axios

*I think every Raider fan remembers where they were when the Immaculate Reception happened. It was my freshman year at Cal, it was a Saturday, and I was at my busboy job at Williams Athletic Club in downtown Oakland. The game was on TV. The club members eating at the restaurant went ape sh@it. I was depressed for days. Al Davis was a member. Whoda thunk 50 years later I would watch Raider games just for the fun of watching them lose.

Pele was one of the greatest athletes the world has ever known. I had only heard about him, but hoped one day to see him play in person. When I heard he would be performing with the Brazilian team in an exhibition game at 50,000 seat Kezar Stadium, I bought tickets for my parents and myself. I barely knew what soccer was, let alone understand the intricacies of the game. Pele scored two goals by himself and had a couple of assists as the Brazilian team won handily. One of the goals was on a shot with his head, and the other was an amazing back flip, where he kicked the ball right at the moment when his body was vertical up in the air, with his head near the turf, and his feet at the apex of his jump. Amazing.

Pele contributed greatly to the beginning of the wave of popularity of the sport of soccer which began in this country many years ago now. I am fortunate to have 3 young cousins, two girls and a boy, who were all standout soccer players in high school. The boy was too small to make the varsity at Virginia Tech, but played 4 years as a starter on their club team. His sister played both ways in high school, and was also a track star, the 2nd fastest girl in the country at 200 meters, but was injured and had to retire from both sports. The other girl was the best all-around soccer star in high school, a scorer on offense and goalie on defense, and is now mulling over a number of scholarship offers from around the country. I have been to many of my cousins' games, and I thank Pele for encouraging Americans to become interested in this great sport.

not dead yet, sorry, but when the time comes wanna be composted, aka terramation?
> Washington became the first state to legalize human composting in 2019, followed by Colorado and Oregon in 2021, then Vermont and California later in 2022. New York's legislation passed both assemblies over the summer.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/01/new-york-governor-legalizes-human-composting-after-death

literal downside..
> But the departed may not be simply tossed on the compost heap: remains must be delivered to a cemetery corporation certified as an organic reduction facility, suitably contained and ventilated, and not containing "a battery, battery pack, power cell, radioactive implant, or radioactive device".

also a keeper..

One could donate body to a forensics college where they toss the body in the open and let students observe what happens when… for understanding crime scenes analysis.

Much easier!!

It's called "body farms", I think, and they have to put cages over the bodies, lest scavengers (buzzards) pick bodies clean and scatter bones into the woods within days, leaving nothing left to examine.

I want to be placed in a box where my body can later be exhumed and dna analyzed, because some day someone's going to want to know something.
