(Lynch left the Dixie Chicks in 1995, three years before their breakout hit "Wide Open Spaces" was released. She was replaced by Natalie Maines.)

Laura Lynch, a founding member of The Chicks (known at the time as The Dixie Chicks) has died. TMZ reports that Lynch was in a car crash outside of El Paso, Texas, and died yesterday; her cousin Mark Lynch confirmed the news to the outlet. Lynch was 65 years old.

Lynch founded the band in 1989 alongside Robin Lynn Macy and sisters Martie and Emily Erwin (later Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer). Initially, the band was primarily a bluegrass band but moved to a more mainstream country sound with their second album Little Ol' Cowgirl. The change in sound prompted Macy to leave the band, rendering Lynch, who also played the upright bass, the solo lead singer on the band's third album, Shouldn't a Told You That. As a trio, finding a large audience was a slow process. "We were plugging along, doing our thing, and boom, people were hiring us for bigger venues. We needed a bigger sound so we hired Lloyd [Maines]," Lynch told My Plainview in 2003.

Lynch was traveling east on the two-lane Highway 62 when her vehicle was struck Friday by another car that was heading in the opposite direction as it attempted to pass another vehicle.

Lynch was among the four original members of the band started in 1989 and now known as The Chicks along with Robin Lynn Macy and Martie Erwin. She played upright bass and later served as lead vocalist.

TMZ reported that Lynch died at the scene of the crash. An investigation by Texas authorities has been launched.

The driver of the car that struck Lynch's vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.

May God rest her soul. So she was basically the Pete Best of the Dixie Chicks.

Yeah.
The headline was deceiving.

But, the Dixie Chicks have an interesting history, AND it was sad to read those details of the crash. It could happen at any time to anyone.

I wonder what the Dixie Chicks would be hollering on stage today if they hadn't been silenced!

Yeah. Not uncommon that couples in their 90s pass within a few months of each other.

I bet he'd like to make it to 100, which would help cement his rep as "greatest ex-President ever", but I just checked and his birthday isn't until October 1st, so maybe his goal is to just make it to 2024 (may also get "longest time in hospice ever").

CHICAGO (AP) Joey Meyer, who played at DePaul and coached the Blue Demons to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in 13 seasons, has died. He was 74.

Meyer died Friday in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, surrounded by family, DePaul said in a release. The school did not provide any further information.

Joey Meyer played for his father, Ray, for three seasons from 1968-1971, averaging 16.4 points in 75 games for DePaul. The guard was selected by the Buffalo Braves in the 18th round of the 1971 NBA Draft, but never appeared in a game in the league.

Meyer served as an assistant for his father for 11 seasons before taking over when Ray retired after coaching DePaul from 1942-1984.

Joey Meyer got the Blue Demons into the NCAA tourney in each of his first five seasons. They reached the Sweet 16 in 1986 and 1987.

Meyer went 231-158 in his 13 seasons as DePaul's head coach. Some of Meyer's top players included Rod Strickland, David Booth and Tom Kleinschmidt.

Following his time at DePaul, the Chicago native coached in the NBA's developmental league and worked as a regional scout for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Tom has difficulty discerning the difference between reality and fantasy/fiction. He interacts with everything he encounters as if it is reality.

RIP Usenet (1980-2024)

After a long illness, Usenet will have life support removed by Google on February 22, 2024.

Google Groups ending support for Usenet

I will miss a couple of Usenet groups, though one was only interesting during football season and the other I checked on about once a month with little of interest these days.

My two favorite movies David Soul was in:

Magnum Force (1973) - IMDb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070355/

Officer Davis

In the Line of Duty: The F.B.I. Murders (TV Movie 1988) - IMDb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095366/

Michael Lee Platt*

*My favorite David character. My sister is friends with Michael Gross' wife. I told my sister to tell her that I thought Michael's acting in that movie was brilliant. She told my sister that Michael believes that role was one of his best. Those two characters based on the real life murderers were creepy squared.

Zagallo was the last surviving member of the legendary Brazilian first world cup winning eleven.
(first row, hand on the turf)

Quote:

Mrio Zagallo, who has died aged 92, was the most successful footballer in the history of the World Cup. Many players who were more talented and managers who were more tactically astute have won the tournament, but none can equal the Brazilian's record of four triumphs: two as a player, in 1958 and 1962, one as manager, in 1970, and another as assistant manager, in 1994.

Zagallo was also the first of only three men (Germany's Franz Beckenbauer and France's Didier Deschamps followed him) to win the tournament both as a player and as a manager; and he won with the two teams, of 1958 and 1970, that are widely regarded as the best ever to land the trophy.
