I always liked that song, though it's very much a product of the mid '60s R&B style. I hadn't seen him before but I thought he had good stage presence. The audience members they cut away to didn't seem very impressed with him though.

The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind…

While Peter, Paul, and Mary were way before my time for some reason a relative of mine wanted to take me to Wolf Trap when I was visiting Virginia. PP&M were in town so that is what we saw. The crowd was all ages as you might expect as it was outside on the grass. I have to say that I enjoyed myself and the Puff The Magic Dragon singalong with the audience was great. They had a broad appeal across generations.

PP&M did this John Denver song proper. A good song well sung (1969):

"And Peter, Paul & Mary were good: they weren't corny, they were good."
-David Crosby, 2013.

Which brings to mind the young parish priest that was so nervous after saying his first Sunday Mass that during the announcements from the pulpit at the conclusion he said: "Next Saturday at 7:00 pm there will be a Peter pulling contest at St. Taffy's."

First couple of times I heard Bob Uecker (Carson show?), I couldn't believe how funny this crappy baseball player was.

Congrats, Chapman-is-Gone, you are pretty much one of us now, witnessed by the fact that you made a post here while completely forgetting to call us losers. It might be time to give you our secret initiation rites, if only concordtom can remember where he put the paddles after we initiated SBGold.

And helltopay1 is looking down at us, smiling. (I got invited to a "remembrance lunch" for him last Saturday, but instead I went to the Cal Basketball game. He approved of that, too, I'm pretty sure.)

I remember him being asked how to catch a knuckleball. "Wait until it stops rolling and pick it up."

"The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud."

"When I came up to bat with three men on and two outs in the ninth, I looked in the other team's dugout and they were already in street clothes."

At first, I was thinking that he was in pretty good shape just a month ago.
But then at the end of the clip, the female officer has her arm out to hold him up from falling over and they have to guide him back to the chair. Clearly, he was not doing so well.

Obituary: Legendary KTVU anchor Dennis Richmond dies at 81

https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/05/legendary-ktvu-anchor-dennis-richmond-dies-at-82/

Personal connection:

In the early 1980's I worked out at the same gym as Dennis (the Executive Athletic Club, 21st and Franklin, Oakland; ex Raider, Dan Medlin was half owner).

The first time I saw Dennis I was in a small elevator with him. As Ron Burgundy would say, Dennis was actually a Big Deal in the Bay Area at the time. I have always considered it demeaning to acknowledge a celebrity because so many of them are pr@icks….but I broke my own rule. I introduced myself and said that I watched his KTVU newscast every night at 10 pm and really enjoyed it. He could not have been more gracious and appreciative of the compliment.

The next time I bumped into him at the gym was a few months later….and he still remembered my name. I was shocked.

Several years later, after the new Oakland YMCA put my gym out of business in 1987, I was hitting a bucket of balls at Montclair Driving range on the second deck. I hadn't seen him in years and so I just ignored him. As he walked by me to leave he offered me a half bucket of his balls that he didn't have time to hit. I told him how and when I had met him years earlier at the gym. Once again, he could not have been a nicer guy and we had a nice chat.

Dennis Richmond was a great journalist and an even better guy. He will be sorely missed.

*As you can see, he looked like a movie star and was cut like a bodybuilder. He was humble and took none of that seriously.
