Legendary SF Chronicle sportswriter Glenn Dickey died last Friday at the age of 90 at his home in Oakland.

He dominated the Bay Area sportswriting market in the 70's. He was as subtle as a punch to the jaw.

If you were a fraud or a failure, he'd let you know.

RIP Glenn.

Thx for posting.

Dickey was a Cal grad who wrote about Cal in his columns fairly often. In general, his opinions were enlightened and ahead of their time. When he wrote in his column that a coach needed to go, that was the death knell for said coach.

For you younger Bears, let me tell you, back in the day it was hard to get a lot of info about Cal Football and Basketball, as it was all disseminated by half a dozen local sports writers (whose editors knew that this is a pro sports area).

As for the opinions that we share on BI, you had to meet up with friends at Kip's or LaVals. Actually, that part was good.

I was a C. W. Nevius fan. I used to send him emails about his columns and he would respond. It looks like he writes for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat (as Lowell Cohn did).

It looks like Cohn has a Substack.

I rarely agreed with Glenn Dickey, but what do I know.

I used to write folks at the Chronicle too sometimes. Probably still in a box somewhere in my basement are several personal replies from Glenn Dickey, Bruce Jenkins and Herb Caen. I gotta do something with that basement!

I guess former letter-writers evolved into high post-count posters on Bear Insider!

Man, as a Cal fan, I always thought Dickey was pretty much how you spell the first 4 letters of his last name. Given our history of results though, maybe he was more enlightened than I have previously thought.

I thought Glenn was at his very best as the Raiders' beat reporter. When he started writing a column, the first thing I can recall him doing was accusing Willie Mays of being past his prime. Even as a kid, I recognized that Dickey was really just trying to attract eyeballs and I was never more than an occasional reader. Still, the fact that he occasionally wrote about Cal gave us some exposure in a local media which tended to fawn over Stanfurd.

The Reiners were at Conan O'Brien's house for a party when a situation occurred between Nick and his parents. I'm not sure if the parents were aware of the med changes.

It's being reported today that RR told people at the party he was afraid his son would harm him. It is also reported that some party goers wanted to call the police over the father son argument with the idea of getting Nick into a MH hold but Conan O'Brien insisted that not happen, saying it was his party and his house and nobody was calling the police to his house.

Sad topic, but that is the nature of this thread (thx, concordtom!).

At this point, I guess what I'm wondering is, how did the US Postal Service manage to lose my invitation to Conan O'Brien's party this year?

I'm still trying to understand what caused the car to drift into the sandy shoulder.
Conditions were dry and clear. Wondering if there was a medical issue or mechanical one.

2026 Ferrari 296.

Leaves behind an ex-wife and 3 kids.
Sad.

Yes, I am.

He owns a TON of high-performance sports cars.
And he's probably very familiar with that specific stretch of road let alone the Angeles Crest Highway.

If you notice, he comes out of the tunnel and is square in the lane.
All of a sudden, the car goes to the right.

This isn't some rich guy that just happened to buy a new Ferrari and get in over his head.

It looks to me like the drift we commonly see when someone has excess speed for the curvature of the road.
DiabloWags

His speed did not appear to be excessive to me given the conditions and what he was driving.

The 296 has massive mechanical grip.
And if I'm not mistaken, it came stock with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.

Literally a track tire for the street.

Judging by all the marks on the road, he wasn't the only one struggling there.

Don't know the road and it's usage, but I feel sorry for the poor souls traveling that road and wandering into wannabes re-enacting their Fast And Furious fantasies.

The Angeles Crest is where most avid sports car owners take their cars out and put them through their paces.
Usually in the early morning hours when no one is out on the road.

The Tunnels are also a big attraction.
Although if the sun hits you coming out it can very well disorient you.

AI Overview

"According to current reports from December 2025, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has not yet officially named a single party at fault, as the investigation into the fatal crash involving Vince Zampella remains ongoing.

However, preliminary details from the scene and witness accounts suggest the following factors regarding the incident:

Single-Vehicle Collision: The CHP verified that the red Ferrari was the only vehicle involved in the crash, which occurred on December 21, 2025, on the Angeles Crest Highway.

Speed as a Primary Factor: Footage obtained by TMZ and other outlets shows the vehicle "zooming" out of a tunnel at high speed before losing control and striking a concrete barrier.

Driver Identity: While it is confirmed that the driver remained trapped in the burning vehicle and the passenger was ejected, authorities have not explicitly stated whether Zampella was driving or was the passenger at the time of the impact.

Environmental Factors: Some observers have noted that drivers exiting the dark tunnel into bright daylight on that specific stretch of highway can be momentarily blinded, which may have contributed to the loss of control.

Both Zampella and the unidentified passenger succumbed to their injuries following the crash."

Yes.

I now realize that America is entering the Golden Age and Trump is a true OG!

Am so very thankful that Trump has sent Gold over $4500.

Many thanks to the Orange Man!
