USAID / DOGE thread.

As was pointed out elsewhere, the Reuters contract was signed during Trump's first term. Under Trump's eagle eyes.
Since Trump "did it", shouldn't you be opposing it?

It is almost certain Trump had no idea about the expenditure. But even if he did, do you dispute its a good thing to reverse?
I'm just pointing out that Trump is criticizing his own decisions. He should have spent more time reading briefings and doing his job and less time calling in to "Fox and Friends".

DOGE and Elon Musk have your panties in a bunch? Musk now has 100 people on site.
Focus movielover, focus. Where in this exchange did I mention DOGE or Elon Musk?

It's what I've been saying forever - The Left diminishes its own credibility with their insane rhetoric. It's unbelievably stupid because there is so much meat on the bones for legit criticism.

The Trump White House is flooding the zone. The only way the left can respond is to come up with a hoax with the likes we've never seen.

But that's NOT what Vance's speech was about at all. His speech was much more foundational, how Europe is moving away from core values to democracy - election integrity, free speech, religious persecution, etc. - and how that poses a threat to our relationship to each other.

Thank you, BHO.

Sec. 3. DOGE Structure. (a) Reorganization and Renaming of the United States Digital Service. The United States Digital Service is hereby publicly renamed as the United States DOGE Service (USDS) and shall be established in the Executive Office of the President.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/establishing-and-implementing-the-presidents-department-of-government-efficiency/

Obama created the Digital Service after the Obamacare website implosion, giving it relaxed hiring authority (doesn't have to follow civil service rules) and access to all computer systems in the Federal government. Congress approved it and gave it a budget. The Digital Service is a legitimate agency. Trump repurposed it as DOGE. DOGE is an agency with budget and Congressional approval and the ability to look at all computer systems.

Beautiful.

Would you say the same about insane rhetoric from The Right? I'd say that examples abound right now.

Do D's have anyone remotely in the same ballpark as Trump? I thought not. The dynamic is entirely different as a result.

If they do, he has resided in a federal penitentiary for several years.

For decades Presidents have promised to cut waste - RINO Bush Jr., Clinton, Obama, Trump 1.0. Now Trump 2.0 is fulfilling that need.

Our deficit is over $2 Trillion a year, interest payments of $1 Trillion a year. And our C-A (USAID) is promoting transgender issues in South America and LGBTQ in Eastern Europe.

Every federal employee received the Voluntary Termination letter. Every person was put on notice that staff reductions were coming. Every one of them could be sitting at home, collecting a government check, caring for their kids, paying their mortgage and leisurely looking for a next job. It was their choice to reject the offer. There is nothing cruel in this.

The people who were shown the door immediately were the people who chose to Resist by ignoring the Executive Order to halt payments to groups/countries. There is nothing cruel in this, either. They chose to Resist instead of performing their jobs like good non-partisan Civil Servants.

The actions of the government to identify and halt all this wasteful spending is fabulous. Sure, it is a shock to the system. But the fact is, some people have been living off the largesse of the federal government - taxpayers - and it is time to put the practice to a stop.

The people we should really be mad at are those who occupy seats in Congress. Both parties. The failure to fund government appropriately, to exercise appropriate oversight on these agencies, is almost criminal. It is an indication that our form of government may not be able to function (ie Congress has zero political incentive to appropriately manage expenses; the administrative state is a disaster).

I'm a federal employee and I haven't received a "Voluntary Termination letter". I'm not sure how voluntary it is though. Still, I appreciate your empathy.

Yeah, I've cut back on talking about my situation as a federal worker as I don't need a few cretins in here dancing gleefully when I mention my worries and fears.

Fortunately, the word I'm getting from higher up in our agency is that it looks promising that we won't have people getting fired, except maybe the new probationary employees (we have two in my office - they will be good employees if we keep them). However, we have had 4 people decide to retire a year or two earlier than they planned and 1 took the buyout. One person got selected for a promotion to another office and he was looking at houses there, but now it's unclear if he will be allowed to go there due to the hiring freeze. The hiring freeze also ensures that we will be VERY short handed for the foreseeable future.

Overtime for everyone! $$$!!!

A friend that works at the Department of Energy told me everyone received them. My apologies if that's incorrect info.

Re empathy, look, this sucks for the impacted people. I am empathetic. But this sort of thing happens in the private sector all the time. It has happened to me. Nobody is offered 8 months pay for severance. And we see the assorted reports about where the money is going and how ridiculously wasteful things are, so it's necessary. So I'm sorry for the impacted people but this has to be done.

Agreed.

Debt: $36 Trillion
Deficit: $2.5 Trillion?
Interest payments on the debt: $1 Trillion per year

Most ignore the topic; others say we'll simply print money, which robs everyone, but does the debt ever go down?

Could we generate a few Trillion by selling Federal land and / or leaves out West? Use the monies to pay off debt.

Oh. You said "Every federal worker". I'm not in the Department of Energy though.

There was virtually no details in the buyout offer. It was extremely sketchy. Did you ever get a severance offer that a) looked exactly like a phishing email and b) said reply to this email with "Resign" to accept. They promised 8 months pay but how can they guarantee that when Congress has only funded the government through March 15th? What does resigning do to your retirement and medical benefits? I didn't know and a few days wasn't much time to figure it out.

Also, history shows that you're a fool to accept a deal with Trump or Musk. They have long histories of failing to honor agreements. I frankly just didn't trust them to keep their word.

Sure there's waste in government but there's better ways of doing eliminating it than taking a wrecking ball to EVERYTHING wasteful and non-wasteful in just a few days. Do a REAL audit with people who know how to do them. Spend the time (6 months? A year?) and do it right. The collateral damage to important agencies will take years, if not decades, to fix.

By the way, do our people watching over our nuclear weapons seem wasteful? We just had another plane crash today in Toronto. Yeah, that's Canada and it's not our vassal state yet, but do we really need to be gutting an already understaffed FAA?

I understood my friend to mean every federal employee, not all people in his department/Agency.

Clinton and Obama tried the "rational and reasonable" approach to doing this. Both failed, likely because 1) the institutions of government are so vast and they work to protect themselves; and 2) Congress ultimately is motivated to never allow cuts (those cuts affect businesses and people in somebody's district). I'm afraid it has to happen this way, or never at all.

Re the airplane crashes…we don't know the official causes yet but initial indications are Pilot error (DC), mechanical malfunction (Philadelphia) and weather (Toronto). I'm not sure FAA staffing mattered at all.

Yeah, the fact that the FAA didn't have enough Air Traffic Controllers available to be fully staffed that night had nothing to do with the Washington DC crash.

EVERYTHING hasn't been cleared out. DOGE now has over a hundred employees and is auditing multiple departments.

USAID - which squaked first - was found to be a honeyhole of corruption and waste, and 220,000 new hires were released. There are still 2.1 million Federal employees.

This is one of the dumbest statements ever. You don't have to elect a narcissistic felon to bring in a narcissistic nazi billionaire that has no security clearance that hires teenagers to fire federal employees without merit.
