Very dumb politics to go out of your way and alienate your best ally and trading partner.

Agreed. Carney just started so maybe he'll just have to learn the hard way.

Xi agrees.

Speaking of China, a study has shown that this year's most popular Christmas gift in China was the iPhone. It's heartwarming that there are still countries where people appreciate the gifts their children crafted themselves.

This was not stolen from Saturday Night Live. It was stolen and rewritten from the comments section on an SNL Youtube video.

that's laughable. Not in the chuckle sense but in the satire sad kind of way. Attached is a list of the fraudsters Trump has pardoned. Not sure how that squares.

Systemic fraud bud. I've talked about it many times here. Obviously there are going to be some things Trump does I do not like.

Canada no longer importing Subarus made in Indiana, importing them from Japan instead due to lower tariffs between these two countries than between the US and Canada. Consequences of a short-sighted policy towards Canada.

I would imagine other Japanese cars made in the US will no longer ship to Canada. And perhaps as well German and European cars built in the US will also meet the same fate, as Canada now has lower tariffs from the EU than from the US.

Quote:

Japanese automakers produced approximately 3.3 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, with around 71% of Japanese-brand vehicles sold in the U.S. being manufactured in North America. These manufacturers, including Toyota and Honda, have heavily localized production, with over 69% of their U.S.-sold vehicles built domestically.
Key details regarding Japanese-brand car production in the U.S. include:
  • Production Volume: Roughly 3.3 million vehicles were produced in the U.S. by Japanese companies last year.
  • Market Impact: Japanese-branded cars comprised more than 40% of the U.S. car market, including both imports and domestic production.
  • Localization: Roughly 71% of all Japanese-brand vehicles sold in the U.S. are manufactured in North America.
  • Employment: Japanese automakers support over 1.36 million U.S. jobs.
  • Specific Brand Data: Toyota had 50.8% of its U.S.-sold cars made in the U.S., while Honda had 72.4% made in the U.S..
  • Top American-Made Models: Honda and Toyota often rank highly on lists of "most American-made" cars, surpassing some domestic brands.

Over 100,000 US jobs could be lost from the closure of the Canadian market to export of foreign car brands made in the US.

It's a back of the envelop number assuming that around 7% of US auto production goes to Canada, that country being the largest importer of US made vehicles, and if the Japanese auto industry employs 1.36 million people then the total when you add in American and European brands will be at least twice that.

Our great leader:

"Again and again and again. I couldn't get her off the phone," the president continued. "So [the tariffs were] at 30 percent, and I didn't really like the way she talked to us, and so instead of giving her a reduction, I raised it to 39 percent, and then I got inundated by people from Switzerland and I figured, 'Do you know what? We'll do something that's a little bit more palatable.'"

Trump was likely referring to former Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter, who left office Dec. 31 and was succeeded by current President Guy Parmelin. The Hill reached out to the White House for clarification.
