I guess you are a traditionalist, or maybe just when it comes to England's teams. I don't remember that 98 team getting anywhere. Was that the team where Beckham got the red against Argentina and their over the hill keeper got chipped? I thought Shearer had "retired" from the national team by then. If I remember correctly (no research for this thread), they did get to the finals of two Euros (the last one and the covid delayed one), and they could have won either. And I believe the go to the semis of the 2018 WC going out to Croatia.

I think the overexposure makes them difficult to root for. And they are missing a maestro in the midfield, say an Odegaard. But I think they are as talented as any team but Spain and France and maybe the deepest. And if the game is slow Harry Kane is as good as anyone.

Pickford is funny. He is the most overconfident player I can remember, and he is not a great club keeper. But he has won a lot for the national team, and he is at his best when the stakes are highest. I don't think he is a weakness like Mike Maignan.

I missed most of the game today. The parts I saw they were dominating but scoring is not easy.

A good general rule but does not apply to soccer. I was on the east coast when the US beat Mexico in the round of 16 in 2002 and remember setting an alarm to watch live starting sometime between 2 and 4am.
