"Argentina's Lionel Messi, France's Kylian Mbappe and Norway's Erling Haaland are tied for the lead with seven goals apiece at the 2026 World Cup, marking the first time in the tournament's history that three different players have scored at least seven goals. And all three have at least one game left to add to their tallies!"

The unfortunate truth about Pulisic is that he just gets hurt too much. Had a lot of promise and sometimes still shows it but that next injury is always around the corner. Too bad.

I agree with this. He looked great coming into the tournament and in the first half against Paraguay. But he is a small guy and is prone to muscular injuries. It is too bad, it is not his fault. Reyna is also a top player whose leg injuries have robbed him of his speed, and he is only 23.

I think that Pulisic does not like being so much in the spotlight. He would be better and the team would better (of course) if he was the fifth best player. McKennie, on the other hand, loves the attention, and I think it motivates him.

It is an 11 players game. We need to be strong at all 11 positions. Belgium exploited us where we were weak, among other things. Until the round of 16 good coaching can hide weaknesses, but in that round, the truth comes out.

One player will never save us. As good as Mbappe or Yamine Lamal is, we would not win the tournament with either. We need constant improvement. Right now I think we need to replace Ream (Trusty), Adams (Sullivan), Dest (Gozo), and maybe Freese (Kochen). And we need more big games. Sometimes we play in the Copa America, the South American championship, and I hope we do again soon.

I would agree with your speculation that this Forum may be part of an undergraduate psych class experiment.

This dawned on me when a controversial high-volume Trump supporter once posted a thread about their specific health issues as if the psych "class" wanted to see if anyone would offer their sympathy.

As I recall, there was only one person to offer their condolences.

An honest (?) appraisal of our players:

Freese: A good and confident goalie who is better with his hands than his feet. Strength helps in jostling in front of the goal. Is only 27 and goalies mature later. MLS lifer, needs to go to a top 4 league in Europe. I am not giving up on him, but I also hope we have better in 2030.
A. Robinson: Has the lungs of a marathon runner, never stops. Fairly big and fast. Technique is very average. Cannot beat anyone off the dribble, and his crossing is below average. Would love a better player at that position but I don't think we have one. Arfsten, his reserve, is better on the ball, but is not a good enough athlete.
Ream: Great tournament but at 38 is not a round of 16 athlete. And really never way. Love his long range passing.
Richards: Most improved player and most irreplaceable player. A few years ago he would lose focus regularly. Now he is a rock. Best center back at Crystal Palace in the Premier League. In the running for best central defender in US history, which is less impressive than it sounds, we have always struggled here.
Freeman: His growth is amazing. Started his first MLS game in 2025 and now has moved to Valencia in Spain and auto start on USMNT. Still a lot of room to go, if he improves at the rate of Richard, watch out. Not an outside back in a 4-man back line, but could play right center back in a 3 man line or center back.
Adams: Plays with a lot of heart but for a pure defender is not fast enough or big enough. Would like to see a more well rounded player in his position. Had a good tournament.
Tillman: A revelation in this tournament. I would have to watch the replay, and I won't, but I think he was the best player against Belgium. Can do a little big of everything and should be a starter for awhile.
McKennie: Had a great tournament until Belgium. He is a great passer when he has time, but they did not let him have any. Would like to see a midfield of Tillman, McKennie and Reyna so he has less responsibility. His technique can desert him at times.
Pulisic: Came in the tournament in great form but I think his injury robbed him. Very up and down even when not injured. I think he is a right wing, not good enough for left wing, which is the most important attacking position on the field.
Balogun: Had a great tournament. Very high soccer IQ. Good skills and quickness and two footedness. His movement was key to the US attack. Can get swallowed up by bigger defenders. Not the striker to win the tournament.
Dest: Nice player, good dribbler, but not fast enough or dangerous enough. Zavier Gozo will take his spot soon.
Reyna: Post many injuries he needs to play in front of the defenders like Rodri does for Spain rather than as an attacker. But he does not like to play defense. Still the most skilled US player I have ever seen.
Berhalter: Great attitude. Can he get a little more skilled and a little more athletic? Needs to go to Europe.
Trusty: Great athlete and since left footed should slot into Ream's left center back slot. Could be a weapon on corners. Needs to improve his awareness.
The rest: Cut. Not good enough.

Lionel Messi set an unwanted World Cup record as the first player in the tournament's history to miss two non-shootout penalties in a single edition at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a saved spot-kick against Egypt in Atlanta. With this failure, he has accumulated four career World Cup misses. [1, 2]

Messi has now failed to score 4 of his 8 World Cup penalty attempts. His previous non-shootout misses on the global stage occurred against Iceland in 2018 and Poland in 2022. [1, 2]

Argies should not let him shoot PKs.

As a non-TDS afflicted soccer fan, I am glad our president made the call asking for the red card to be reviewed. The card should never have been called based on slow mo and still images that made the incident look way worse than it was, which is illegal VAR procedure by FIFA rules. Hopefully, others can also look past their bias and see the facts for what they are.

FYI - Governments have been strictly prohibited from directly interfering with FIFA on things like referee decisions, with penalties being dished out to soccer federations whose government interfered.

AI Overview

Under FIFA Statutes, national governments are strictly prohibited from directly interfering in the internal operations, elections, or disciplinary decisions of football associations. Member states that violate this rule face immediate penalties, including bans on national teams and club participation in all international competitions. [1, 2]

Enforcement of the Rule
FIFA requires all member associations to manage their affairs independently and without political influence (Articles 2(2) and 15(c)). If a government dissolves a federation board, attempts a hostile takeover, or overrides refereeing decisions, FIFA regularly steps in to suspend the offending country. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Nations that have historically faced World Cup or international bans due to political meddling include: [1]
  • Nepal (Suspended over government interference in the football federation)
  • Pakistan and Chad (Banned for government interference and hostile takeovers)
  • Mali (Suspended after its sports minister dissolved the executive committee of the national federation)
  • Kenya (Suspended by FIFA when the government dissolved the football federation board)
  • Kuwait, Indonesia, Iraq, and Nigeria (All previously sanctioned for government attempts to control or dissolve their football associations) [1, 2, 3, 4]
Recent Controversies
While FIFA enforces these guidelines globally, the strictness of the rule occasionally sparks controversy. High-profile interventionssuch as when the White House directly lobbied FIFA to suspend an automatic red-card ban for U.S. striker Folarin Balogunhave led to accusations of political favoritism and inconsistency in how FIFA applies its disciplinary rules. [1, 2, 3, 4]

It was a decision made by an 18 person board. Not Trump. Who cares, let's beat Belgium.

Since Belgium is being a scared, whiny *** about this, let's rename Belgian Waffles to Freedom Waffles!

It's really not. Nothing against the rules happened. Move on.

Did you ever compete in sports at the college or pro level? You want to compete based on your own skill and not because a politician or administrator decided to put his thumb on the scales. That is the difference.

Yep and as I said earlier, I'd always want to face the other team's best players. You're making it seem like somehow Belgium has to play at a disadvantage, they don't. I'm done going on about this, it's over to me.

It's not about Belgium it is about the U.S. National Team and what Col. Bone Spur did. He pissed off the Belgium team, gave them bulletin board material and the results and the celebrations speak for themselves. The great thing is he will never get a chance to do this again.

Very entertaining game for neutrals, Egyptian goalie playing out of his mind holding it together, Egypt showing they belong, with some talent and smarts.

It would be fun to see this go into OT and PKs, the pressure on Messi and co will be enormous.

He also did his homework on Messi and his PKs - watch the ball and react to his shot, don't pick a side and dive before the shot, that's what you do against tentative penalty takers. Messi should just ignore the GK and blast the ball mid-height inside one post, he is capable of doing this but somehow chokes on PKs more often than not.
