It's just not a likeable team, not just because of their dark tactics and unsportsmanlike conduct, but also because of the blatant favoritism from FIFA, and the over the top glorification of Messi in the mass media.

This is how he is going to be remembered:

" Cucurella was asking him if everything was okay, and Messi went to ask them to send him off.
It's the most dishonorable action I've seen on a soccer field, and it's going to haunt Messi for the rest of his life."

The 2010 Holland team was similarly unlikeable despite having some brilliant players like Van Persie, horrible tactics, violence, which marred their heritage of great football from the Cruijff and Gullit eras that made them a favorite of neutral soccer lovers worldwide. Thankfully they've long moved on since.

Likely I will watch no more than a few MLS matches this summer, so I am probably not going to get Apple TV (ok maybe when Severance season 3 comes out next year...). I think I'll just wait until one of these teams is on FS1 (like Real Salt Lake with Gozo tomorrow night) and record it.

People who are increasing their soccer involvement should know about Fabrizio Romano. He is the Shams/Schefter of professional soccer and announces where everyone is going before they get there. Says Zidane is going to France. I know someone who had a relative in the French delegation to the World Cup who says the same. Cal88 mentioned this earlier.

Also Morgan Rogers going to Chelsea for a crazy price.

English players are overpriced in the PL, they tend to be overrated at home and there is also a premium for having English players in a league dominated by "imports".

Zidane is taking over for Deschamps, next month. Barthez is reported to be his GK coach. Funny clip about Zizou I came across recently (context for noobs: Zidane scored twice on headers in the 98 final against Brazil, Roberto Carlos being one of the many mega-stas on that team) :

Better than Deschamps, only caveat is that he hasn't coached in a while and maybe not up to date on 2020s tactics. He had a lot of success in his first coaching stint 10 years ago at Real Madrid, and a bit less on his shorter 2nd stint there 5-6 years ago. On the plus side, he knows the Spanish game well and Spain being the chief rival for the Euro and world cup in the next 2-4 years, maybe he can crack that nut.

He has a tough demeanor and a big aura from having been the greatest player in the world at his peak and won't put up with divas on his team. Then again he might ruffle some players feathers, but he has a very deep roster to work with, so hopefully he can put together a team that is at once star-studded and blue collar.

Note that the last 3 French coaches, Laurent Blanc, Deschamps and Zidane were all teammates on the 98 world championship team.

It's kind of weird that the Chinese are able to reverse engineer and copy incredibly complex technology like ASML's photolithography machines, but can't seem to learn how to put a national soccer team program together using their enormous demographic and economic resources. I think a big part of it is that they don't understand football culture.

They could definitely challenge for a world title in women's soccer for starts, and rise to the level of Japan and S Korea as a respectable/top 20 team if they did get their act together. They would have loved to host a World Cup, would be shoo-ins given that today they are the #1 consumer market in the world, the only thing that is holding them back is the fear of their team getting embarrassed, and their local rivals Japan, SK outperforming them.

Messi clipping Spence's extended right leg well after Spence had cleared the ball is a foul, that contact imparted sideways momentum on Spence's right leg contributing to his injury on his supporting left leg. Maybe you haven't played much soccer so that notion might not register, or perhaps you're just being a bit disingenuous here, much like Messi trying to rat out Cucarella... ; )

The great majority of those billions watching the final were pulling for Spain, you can keep ignoring the evidence I have posted here.

1) I was pulling for Spain too.

2) Messi did not foul Spence. Messi was jumping over the sliding Spence. The slight accidental contact of the top of Spence's right foot, initiated by Spence's slide and lifting of his foot, likely didn't cause the left ankle sprain.

3) I play and watch a lot of soccer. Other than the BI OT board, it seems to have pretty much taken over my life since my kids started playing competitively. My son's coach was on his national team (not USA).
