Coach is back.

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new contract to continue as manager of the U.S. men's national team, U.S. Soccer announced Monday morning.

Pochettino's new deal is set to last through the 2030 World Cup, and will see him try to build on what has been established over the course of his nearly two years in charge. Long time assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimnez, as well as more recent additions Sebastian Pochettino and Sylvia Tuy, will remain on Mauricio Pochettino's staff.

Great news if he stays, I think. He established an attitude and a quality of play that I think was the best there has ever been. But I wonder if he will stay if a Premier League teams comes calling. His buyout may be key.

"If he stays" - key words. Unless there is a huge buyout, we can expect to see him gone in a season or two.

To be honest, if one of the bigger Euro pro teams come after him, the buyout may be a formality.

He was making $6M+/year before, probably got a raise, a very good pay even by EPL or world club standards, in a low pressure job and a country with relatively low high end tax rate. He's also not that hot a commodity given that the USMNT did not overperform in the WC. I doubt he goes anywhere before the next WC.

For those interested (other than my brother sicko, sluggo), USMNT U-20 plays in the CONCACAF quarterfinals tonight as the 1 seed against 8 seed Guatemala in Mexico. I'm going to stream on the Fox Sports app (FS2). Game time is 6pm Pacific, I think (one site listed it at 7 but I think it's 6).

It's a "big" game in that winning and making it to the semifinals earns qualification to the U-20 World Cup next year in central Asia, to which the US will send our best U-20 players. By contrast, the team here is our B team, though in theory they should be better than Guatemala. But as sluggo points out, Central American teams have a certain... style. It's going to be a street fight.

#20 Cupps is a decent center back to my eyes, and #7 Contreras is a decent wing. The other wing who was supposed to be good (#11 Belchimas) was injured by some hard (dirty) tackles early in the group stage match against El Salvador and may still be out. #6 Guske and #15 Sanchez are not bad as holding midfielders. As far as goal scoring forwards, it's not great. Perhaps #17 Ramos and #9 Klapija. Again, this is our B team, and there's not a ton of speed or athleticism, but I could definitely see Cupps, for example, making the 2034 main USMNT world cup roster. Maybe even 2030.

OneKeg thanks for the preview. I had said 7pm pacific because that was what TV said but it now says 6pm. While this team is not great we may send a great team to the u20 WC so a win would be big.

Wow, that would be great. If Gozo actually gets playing time for a EFL Premier League team like Crystal Palace (as Richards does), that would certainly validate your praise of his quality and potential. I do think he's good, but from what (admittedly little) I've seen, I would have guessed him more likely to go to a team in the middle of a league that is not as deep, like say in Italy.

An awful first half for the USMNT U-20 against Guatemala in a crucial match (quarterfinal to qualify for the U-20 World Cup next year). Very lucky to have tied it up 1-1 off a corner on the last play of the half.

So many careless mistakes and passes way off target. Need to play better.

Still shaky but better for the US U-20 in the second half so far, 70 minutes in.

Contreras with a nice swerving take, down the right wing for an assist to Klapija to put the US up 2-1 on Guatemala.

Right, thank you. I had not been aware of that.

US fairly dominant in the second half for a 3-1 win over Guatemala. But if they play like this (especially if they repeat the miserable first half today) against Costa Rica in the semifinals, they probably lose.

The big news is that just making it to the semis qualifies the US for the U-20 World Cup next year. And for that, the US will send some better players.

Fortunately, the US has many better players. I do not know how many of the players who played today will even make the roster. I think the US will target trying to win the tournament and try to bring every player who is not on the senior team and whose team will release him. Gozo will probably be on the senior team by then, and maybe Pierre, but the best other young players might not be. I expect Sullivan and Albert and Mehmeti and Hall.

I think the US goalkeeper Rizvanovich is good, although I have not seen enough of him. After today's game I would say Oyharabal, who played as an attacking midfielder, has what looks like the most pro potential. He plays for Athletic Cloooob (Club) in Bilbao, the same team as Nico Williams, Spain's second best winger. They have a policy of playing only Basque players, although I don't know how strict the policy is. I looked up that he has a Basque-American father, a Colombian mother, and was born in France. What a man of the world. His touch is nice and his corners were deadly. The backup right back Mussenden looked like a very good defensive player, he should start.

It was disappointing to see the US play a soft press. The youth teams should play like the senior team, which now plays a fierce press. Plus the US has better athletes and more depth and Guatemala was more effort than skill. We should have pressed them off the field. Their goal was a mistake by the US defenderApplewhite, who let their best player get off an easy cross with his strong foot. You have to force him to cross with his weak foot.

The Premier League is built on athleticism and Gozo has it. It is too early to say whether his skill is high enough since he plays in MLS. It is great that he is going to a mid table team like Palace. If he went to Chelsea or Man City he would likely be loaned elsewhere, but Palace does not play those games, so I assume they will give him a chance to earn a spot. Fingers crossed!

The US will play 4-seed Costa Rica in one of the semifinals this Fri. Aug. 7th. I would guess the earlier one at 2pm Pacific. Championship Final on Sun. Aug. 9th at 4pm Pacific, looks like.

The second semifinal on Friday (7pm Pacific) will likely be between the winners of the remaining quarterfinals tomorrow (Wed.):
3-seed Canada v 6-seed Jamaica and
2-seed Mexico (host) v 7-seed Panama

Canada beats Jamaica 3-1 in extra time but doesn't look that good doing it.

Mexico leading Panama 2-0 in the second half and looks to me like the best team in the tourney. If I had to guess, El Tri will beat both Canada and the US-Costa Rica winner. But even if that happens, the US accomplished the goal of qualifying for next year's U-20 World Cup.

Edited to add: Mexico won 4-0 over Panama, who I think is better than Guatemala.

Against possibly the best team in Mexico at not yet 17 Sullivan's second half performance was outrageous. He just need to upgrade his athleticism 10-20% (made up numbers) and he will be scoring lots of goals. I heard a soccer podcaster saying Sullivan and Pierre are both possibly black swan events, and I might agree.

In my defense, I normally listen to podcasts and other such content on my phone while at the gym, and that's where I watched the Canada-Jamaica Wed/ quarterfinal, off and on. Then that evening, I watched the Mexico-Panama quarterfinal at home on my phone while my wife and kid were watching a show that they both like.

More importantly, the US U-20 beat Costa Rica 2-0 in the first semifinal, and I again was at the gym hoping to watch (2pm start), but it was not streaming on the Fox app for some reason, so I couldn't? Anyway, looks like they rested some starters (e.g. Cupps, Guske, though the latter did come in as a sub) and subbed out Contreras at wing in the second half which they haven't been doing since Belchimas got injured. Again, could not watch it, just reporting from the match event log.

May try to watch Mexico-Canada tonight if Fox does stream that. To my eye, Mexico is the best U-20 team in the tourney and should beat both Canada (who has looked worse than the US) tonight and probably the US in the final on Sunday (quick turnaround), though that may be a good match. If Canada advances somehow, I think the US takes Canada.

Mexico U-20 comes from behind to beat Canada 2-1 in the remaining CONCACAF U-20 semifinal.

U-20 Final on Sunday, US v Mexico. 4pm Pacific (I think). Not sure what channel. Hopefully Fox's streaming isn't fubar like it was today.

Messi's father died Saturday night at age 68.



Sounds like he may have had cancer or something because it had been reported he was unable to attend the World Cup due to treatments and when that was reported the Messi family went to attack irresponsible media.

The more I get to know Messi, and Argentina football this past month) the less I think of him as a person.

Jorge Messi served as his son's agent - gee, didn't Messi get in major trouble in Spain for tax evasion or something??

Excuses, excuses.

I actually do the same thing, watch soccer on my phone while doing my boring cardio at 24hour fitness. I was all set to watch the replay of the US game when instead highlights came up. (In court I would deny it, but I might have watched five minutes of Mexico-Canada.) Even considering weak competition, giving up only 1 goal before the finals is good. From what I have seen goalie is strong, and I like that his nickname is "The Rizzler." Look up the slang "rizz" if you don't know it, it is nothing bad. He is 18 and 6'4'', he needs to get out of MLS (Minnesota United) and play somewhere. I think the #1 issue for the USMNT is finding a goalie for 2030.

Cupps went back to Chicago. I guess they need him now they are playing Leagues Cup (?), some competition between MLS and Liga MX, which means his Chicago team is playing twice a week instead of once.

At the U-17 and U-20 level the US has been qualifying but regularly losing finals to Mexico. This team is not much, so maybe they can keep it 0-0 and The Rizzler can take them home with the Cup. I see the game on my Sling schedule today at 4pm pacific on FS2.

In sad news, Berchimas, US winger, broke his foot on one of two dirty challenges by El Salvador in the first five minutes of the game, neither of which warranted a card. I hope this does not impact his career too much. I hate CONCACAF.

Actual data? What about how I feel?

I am mixing together U17 and U20. Looking at the data, at U17 Mexico has won 6 in a row and the US has not won since 1999. And Mexico won the last U20 in 2024. There was a covid break, and the US has won only once since covid, in 2022. So it maybe feels worse than it has been.

I am mixing together U17 and U20. Looking at the data, at U17 Mexico has won 6 in a row and the US has not won since 1999. And Mexico won the last U20 in 2024. There was a covid break, and the US has won only once since covid, in 2022. So it maybe feels worse than it has been.


I think the COVID break and not having won the most recent makes it feel longer. I didn't look up U-17 but I trust your numbers there
