The American people lack the emotional maturity and personal discipline to come to grips with the fact this pandemic is not over.

Now with regard to the Olympics, that is on the IOC:

Cases surge to 6-month high in Tokyo a week before Olympics

https://apnews.com/article/sports-lifestyle-2020-tokyo-olympics-japan-olympic-team-tokyo-47d81e15c1b320bc37b721160a4b7bdc

The frustrating thing is that the pandemic COULD BASICALLY BE OVER in this country, were it not for the immature, undisciplined, selfish, ignorant, stupid people who have not gotten the safe, effective, free vaccine.

Thanks for nothing, you stupid f***s.

Not saying I agree with this guy, but does anyone have a reason why all of the sudden the right wing outrage machine has decide it's time to promote vaccines to its base? Have they just finally figured out it's better if their viewers die less?

Big C
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I don't know if it's as much the fact that their individual viewers/voters are dying as it is the fact that their numbers of viewers/voters will diminish as it becomes more and more apparent that they're on the wrong side of history.

It's pretty powerful when -- each and every day -- hundreds of Americans die and almost all, like 99%, are not fully vaccinated. Even at the micro level... Uncle Homer died from COVID. Was he vaccinated? No. Aunt Edna got vaccinated. Did it hurt her? Does she seemed controlled by the 5G? No. Word spreads.

Probably multiple factors. If I had to guess, they got some really bad internal polling and also saw the stock market crashing and Wall Street blaming it on the bad COVID numbers.

" The criticism of those who are eligible to be vaccinated and have chosen not to get the shot despite vaccines being available follows a concerted effort among conspiracy theorists and others on social media and conservative media outlets such as Fox News to sow baseless doubt over the safety or need for vaccinations despite a slew of evidence over their ability to shield people from the worst effects of the virus, including death.

Some of these falsehoods have been embraced by elected Republicans, while other senior party members have refused to actively endorse the uptake of vaccines, citing personal choice.

In Florida, the Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, this week pointed to data showing the vast majority of hospitalized Covid-19 patients hadn't received shots. "These vaccines are saving lives," said DeSantis, who recently began selling campaign merchandise mocking masks and medical experts, such Dr Anthony Fauci, the leading public health official in the US and adviser to the US president."

One thing that interests me about the numbers is that while we're seeing a surge in COVID cases, COVID death rates have remained low.

I know deaths have been a lagging metric, but it seems like we're past the point where you would have expected to start seeing a rise in deaths corresponding to the earlier rise in new cases, and we aren't seeing it. The vaccines are doing the job.

"Is it better for children to catch Sars-CoV-2, as they do the common cold, or is it better to protect them through vaccinations, and measures such as social distancing and face masks? This is the question many countries are now asking.

The current approach in England seems to be to let teenagers get on with it and see what happens once they're infected. The result will be an uncontrolled epidemic among younger age groups. Some British scientists aren't alarmed by this, pointing to other diseases such as seasonal flu, which cause more hospitalisations among children than Covid-19. By contrast, paediatricians in the US argue that exposing children to a new virus with potentially long-term complications is a major risk that should be avoided."

That quote is sad as it basically says

No protection VS vaccines, masks, and social distancing .

Unvaccinated children should wear masks and practice social distancing. My 18 month can handle wearing a mask. Small exposure is better than exposure to large amounts of the virus.

Vaccination rates are pretty high for seniors - 80% fully vaxxed and 90% having had at least one dose. Given that the vast majority of deaths were from that age group (75-80% I think), it shouldn't be surprising that we've massively reduced the death count.

If we had that level of vaccination for everyone eligible for a vaccine, we would be much closer to normal now and the level of deaths would slow to a trickle.

Totally. Though I wish more of the reporting on COVID would focus on the "deaths" number rather than "cases." Now that we have so many people vaccinated (especially in the high-risk category) you can no longer assume that case increases will be followed by deaths. And deaths are really the key problem; no one minds just having some cold/flu symptoms and coming through it without issue, even if that was a COVID case.

"Death rates remain steadily low" doesn't make for good headlines, I guess.

Many high-profile Republicans from the Alabama governor, Kay Ivey, to the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, to the Fox News commentator Sean Hannity are now becoming more proactive in encouraging Americans to get vaccinated.

Pollsters, however, say their party's base remains unswayed, with conservative Americans much more likely to be unvaccinated and hesitant about getting the shot.
