Amazing Carol Christ "is doing more than any other PAC-10 CEO to get us in" without us hearing anything. Hopefully her super-secret mega deal is revealed soon.
For the love of god you are a broken record. If you actually cared, you'd be taking your mouth (and your money) to where it mattered. I suggest you give that a try. Whining - over and over and over - on this board does absolutely nothing.
Why does this bother you so much? 90% of internet forums are repetitive.

If you have a personal relationship with the Chancellor and you know that she's doing everything she can to try to get us into a major conference, then that's great, but if she hadn't hired and retained the worst AD in the country, Cal athletics wouldn't be a laughingstock begging for a life preserver from a major conference right now.
When something so important is happening, I get really pissed at people who say they care - very loudly - while actually doing nothing. Simple as that.

I live 6,000 miles and 17 time zones away and have not been paid $millions to administer Cal athletics. I am not the one who needs to be doing something, but assuming there is something I can do besides posting my concerns on this board, what do you want me to do? What are YOU doing besides trying to quiet any reporting of icebergs on the Titanic?

True, but Stanford is getting equally screwed in this deal, and they are famously conservative.

Also, we may be liberal, but we brought America the atomic bomb. Just sayin'.

Does anybody have any idea what the exit fees are for these teams?

Could Cal be headed to a one time windfall with everyone leaving the conference, or would the exit fees just be waived since everyone is leaving?
Exit fees are ZERO because the contract expires next year. The Pac 12 was so poorly run it's mind-boggling.

These two twitter responses pretty much sum it up:

Quote:

Nobody feels that way about Virginia, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, UNC, GA Tech, or any of the other great public universities. There is a price to pay for elitism, self-righteousness, and dysfunction. If you're going to sit on a gilded throne, you'd better have your house in order.
and

Quote:

Also Cal and the way they behaved in the wake of UCLA leaving for the B1G turned off a lot of people.

the rest is "they're commies" and "they'll still have their protests" type comments.

That is half of it. Right wingers are very noisy on social media.

The other half is folks who went to a non-elite college, or no college, who hold a grudge because they feel slighted every time academic credentials are compared.

Stanford feels the second half of that oversized bucket of hatred and resentment, and we are on the receiving end of both halves.

I've had to explain for years to people that the City of Berkeley and Cal are different places. Does Cal skew left? Yes, but so do a lot of schools. Do a lot of the students just want to get their degrees and make some money? Absolutely.

I just don't get this quote either. Cal has a ton of students from the lowest rungs of American socioeconomic status, and was (2 years ago maybe?) ranked as the #1 school in the country giving college students upwards socioeconomic mobility.

I grew up in Texas. PLENTY of UT alumns are elitist, snobby *******s.

I guess all I'm saying is, it feels as though many of these internet judgements (most?) have become nothing more than a meme originally lodged (and oft repeated) by people who have spent 0.000 seconds on the Berkeley campus or interacting with Berkeley students and faculty.

Anyways, it doesn't really matter, I just find it odd.

I have been on various P12 sites during this entire P12 media deal fiasco. Cal is basically universally hated by most. Arizona and ASU the worst. Utah was somewhat supportive until they were advised the B1G had no spot for them but were considering Cal. Now the venom on that site for Cal is quite high.

The various posters from the Big 12 really dislike Cal. I was looking around the B1G today. Fans hate Cal. None of this should be a surprise.
Is the Big 12 hatred for Cal based on politics? I can't imagine it would be any other reason except for a tendency towards academic arrogance. I'm also sure that there's a lot of anger because our teams haven't done well, our attendance has sucked, and yet because of our academic stature and location in the Bay we're still a higher priority than Utah or any of the Big 12 schools. I could see how they could cry foul because in their minds, they've done all the right things - spend insane amounts of money on athletics to field competitive teams and filled the stands. I'm not going to torture myself by going into the twitterers or risk life and limb by engaging some yahoos who hate everything my school and I stand for.

Interestingly, I checked on one of the screeds about the ACC and there was a lot of talk about combining small basketball schools with wine and cheese alums with football schools and that the ACC can rot in hell. When someone asked why all the hatred for Cal and nothing against Michigan, UCLA, Northwestern, UNC, or Georgia Tech, they again spouted all this crazy anti-lefty stuff. Have any of them ever visited Madison or Ann Arbor? Apparently not. For better or worse, we're the poster child for everything they think is wrong in this country and for them it's payback time. Of course, Fox is probably of the same mind. So interesting that the B1G presidents obviously would love to be in the same room with Cal and Stanford, but that's where the country is at this point.

Yes, they hate our politics. Some of this goes back to the 60s and Vietnam.

Some of it is that they feel we look down on them, or that we think our degrees mean more. We like to think Cal degrees are widely recognized everywhere, but smaller companies east of the Mississippi tend to look askance at it was my experience. Larger employers are more receptive.

They also hate that we don't put Athletics first the way other schools do. That said, maybe there is something to putting football first. Schools like Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Notre Dame - even schools like Nebraska and Miami that are living on 30-year-old glory rake in millions of dollars.

I agree. I don't think anti-LDS feelings are involved. Utah was not very good at football until Whittingham arrived. What happens when he's gone? Also, since market size is important, it's not surprising that Cal and Furd would be a higher priority. Again, on the academic side, several B1G schools believe they have a lot more in common with Cal than they do with Utah.

If one were to tie the academic stuff to money, Cal and Stanford earn a LOT more research money than anyone else in the field, right? If that gets shared with the B1G schools as part of the academic alliance, I can see why the university presidents would be jazzed about that.

I'm not going to torture myself by going into the twitterers or risk life and limb by engaging some yahoos who hate everything my school and I stand for.
I really think it's politics. Maybe I'm being tunnel vision, but I really do think Fox news did a lot to give us a bad image.

Rich kids from around the Bay Area dressing up as Antifa and going to Berkeley (the city) for whatever reason and causing a raucous = Fox news headline: Antifa protests at UC Berkeley. Students breaking ****.

Seriously. Rinse & repeat, it happened so many times.
The ANTIFA protest was definitely a low point for Cal. A school culture that prides itself on free speech should not be banning an alt-right speaker from holding a conference. You can meme and laugh at his content but blocking speech is hypocritical and a slap in the face to the counter-culture ideals of Cal in the 60s.

This is the point I can't understand. Is it just simple religious bigotry, by religious bigots of a different stripe, who undervalue the Utes? Nice place. Nice campus. Nice program.
I think it's a combo of things, mostly "newness." Not long ago they were a G5 program with often bad attendance and (someone correct me if I'm wrong) not AAU either. They've done everything right and worked their way up, but especially on the athletic side, I think there's a wondering if their success will stick, and if other programs - because of locations in a bigger market or whatever - are more valuable even during a school's down times.

Research funding isn't directly shared with anyone, not even within the BTAA. One could make an argument that maaaaaaybe a tighter tie of universities might foster collaboration, but I've never seen it actually play out in real life. I assume there must be some real benefits via the BTAA, but honestly I've never seen anything from it that makes it really significant, certainly nothing like sharing grant funds.

Check your DM - will give ideas and discuss what I've done

Please copy and paste to me as well. I've done the email to chancellor but how many times can I do that?

That is essentially what he recommended, I don't know why he did not want to make that public. With his permission I can repost what he wrote.

I've contacted Econ. I wanted to DM you due to the more personal statement at the end.

I appreciate that, it was a nice note. That said, I really do not think my sending Christ an email right now is going to help and I really hope she is not spending her time reading hundreds of emails from BI posters at this critical moment in Cal history.

As I said, hopefully she is wrapping up a deal she has been secretly negotiating for months or more likely iMO, now that Kliavkoff's deal is known and seen to be wanting, she is VERY busy taking action.

Utah's rise in football started with head coach Urban Meyer, who preceded Whittingham. KW was his DC.

This is a good thread to read through. I had no idea the level of hate the regular Joe Schmoe has for Berkeley.

Completely agree with this. I deeply dislike that at times Cal (and other universities) have become somewhat anti-free speech. Let someone talk, then get roasted on the merit of what they say. Those thoughts/ attitudes exist out in the world, and I would rather students have the opportunity to hear them here, at Cal, in a supportive environment, completely by their own choice, so that they are exposed to those ideas and can form a coherent rebuttal. That's how the world works - you can't always expect to have someone protect you from ideas you don't like, and you'll get nowhere as an adult by only treating opponents with childlike screaming (well, maybe you can go into TV...). Besides, I think far too many people who are comfortable with shutting down particular speech have never stopped to think about what happens when people they disagree with starts making the rules about who gets shut down or not. Free speech has to be an accepted principal we stand on.

You might try the BOR all members as well. I think I mentioned it, but if you donate, you can comment on what more you can give (or not) to support the move.

I'm not saying that what we do will change anything. But I do believe we all have to try, each to our ability.

the big 10 presidents know the value of stanford and cal. idiots on the internet do not.

i could definitely see the big 10 presidents telling the networks they can have UW and UO if they take Cal and Stanford too.

and frankly UO and UW don't have the markets everyone seems to think they do.
What does this mean exactly? Yeah, you aren't the first person to make this statement, but, I don't get it: you mean with Furd and Cal in the conference, Purdue is somehow elevated academically (and whatever that means) and that association means more in dollars and cents than what they will be losing in splitting the pie more ways?

1) I don't want to turn this into a dichtomy but likely one one side are people who are largely academic administrators who like the prestige, association, and rubbing of elbows (up to and including futgure academic cooperation) with 2 of the most selective institutions in the country.

On the other side are ADs. Remember, one of the intersting facts of this is that the differnce between 20 and 31 million is pretty much peanuts at a place like cal that is like a 3 BILLION enterprise. But it is probably the difference between our AD getting a summer home in Vail. These things matter ;-)

2) the unknown (or at least I have never gotten good data and I have tried as part of my professional life) is publically accessible data on TV viewerships by media market for specific games and properties. Not that 3 million watched U of W's game against Oregon but how those 3 milllion parsed out between Seatte, Portland and everywhere else. It costs several tens of thousands to get that data from Neilson and its competitors.

But the universities likely pay that (or at the very least the conference) and of course the media companies do. This is the GREAT unknown in all of this and why the speculation is a bit mastabatory - no one really knows the value of the most important cards in the game and so fans and others wildly discuss metrics that have no bearing on the actual VALUE of a possible expansion target.
I take it that you are implying that having a very large tv market is not as important as the viewing, or not, habits of entities in said tv homes.
in the new world, yes. Old world your carriage value was a function of subscribers.

Nobody feels that way about Virginia, Michigan, Texas, UCLA, UNC, GA Tech, or any of the other great public universities. There is a price to pay for elitism, self-righteousness, and dysfunction. If you're going to sit on a gilded throne, you'd better have your house in order.
