It is exactly USC. Go read the articles. Lincoln Riley is now on the hot seat. And Cal fans post that they think the "coaching fraternity has it in for us" for firing Tedford for going 3-9 with the worst APR in the country. It is a tough, high paying, high stakes, results oriented business. At least at most schools. Currently at Cal it is just high paying guaranteed employment.

Unlike <possibly> Rivera, Riley would have zero incentive to help us out with Wilcox's $20 million buyout by backloading his contract. We couldn't afford to pay Wilcox and Riley given the sea of red ink we are facing next year.
There are P5 schools who have higher revenues and coaches with much lower buyouts who would be interested in Riley if USC let's him go. The USC boosters would be stupid to though. They just need to buy him a defense.

I'm not as big Rivera guy as many here. I loathe hiring based on affiliation. It's something that sadly still permeates a large portion of professional and college sports.
To me it is a lesser play is that you are paying extra for a coach who has typically been mediocre or slightly mediocre. It's extremely rare that a coach is going to become a top tier coach after they've been established for 15-20+ years. They are what they are. Looking for longshots is just bad gambling espeically with coaches.
The play is always going for the younger dynamic coach because the salary is typically smaller and the term is shorter which correlates to a smaller buyout if it fails. You also have a better chance of the coach being outside the range of mediocre.
The recent consistency of mediocrity with Ron is troubling. He's had one incredible regular season 15-1 (Superbowl loss), one excellent season 12-4 and one strong season at 11-5.
He's 5+ seasons removed that 11-5 season with one .500 season and 4 losing seasons.
While I think he'd be an excellent recruiter, which is critical at the FBS level, I question if his schemes and coaching staff would work in college.

If you're an excellent recruiter then you have done 80% of the job in college, that is what Colorado got with Prime and why they had a much greater leap forward than they would have with any other hire. The second argument is a bunch of if's. That is, I think there is zero chance we have the money to fire Wilcox and hire anyone else. If, (MASSIVE IF) Rivera is willing to cut us a significant deal (like will coach for $1M/year) AND a donor is willing to step up to fund that (essentially making the buyout moot), between keeping Wilcox and hiring Rivera, that is a no brainer. This is based on a lot of what is probably fantasy, however.

We have recruited very poorly at OL and DL, both quantity and quality. That effects everything else. We made a change at OL. Coaching seems improved but we have not seen an impact on recruiting yet. Even in the portal. Browning at DL is another Wilcox friend from Oregon/Boise that he has kept too long with poor results.
Wilcox has been throwing a lot of shade at the players this year (with a few exceptions where he raves about a guy). I've never heard him criticize the coaches, even after they are fired.
We're 3-4 and have been wrecked by the upper-tier teams in this conference, if our defensive coaching is so awesome then how come we let Utah rush for 320?oskidunker said:

Why would you foresee him transitioning to AD? Has he ever said that's something he would want to do? Not everyone wants to be an administrator and it's a relatively low paid position compared to being a coach. I think Rivera would've been a great hire 10 years ago. I have concerns about age (61 - same age as tedford), scheme (his offenses/defenses aren't exactly cutting edge) and whether he has the energy to recruit.
With all that said, if he's the only coach who is willing to take a substantial pay cut, then he'd be a huge improvement over Wilcox

Our AD is making ~$1M per year and doing a terrible job. That's a lot of money for a regular person but it's probably not enough to get Ron to take on a painful admin role at Cal and win at it. I also don't really think that a public university should be paying administrators $1M per year in a semi-retirement capacity.
I would rather have a young hungry AD who is accountable for the performance of his department and wants to earn his meal ticket. I'm sure Ron would do a decent job fundraising but there is a lot more to being a successful AD in the new world of college sports and we don't have any more bad hires left in us.

Exactly how I feel. I don't think he'd be a successful hire in this day and age, but he can't possibly be worse than Wilcox, so if Rivera is the only feasible option in light of our financial situation, I'd embrace him.
Nick Saban is 71 and Mack Hack Brown is 72, although the former is the GOAT coach the latter is still doing quite well in his 70s, so Rivera is not youthful of course but can have good success for several years while we ride out the Wilcox buyout.PtownBear1 said:Exactly how I feel.
