Absolutely no one said donors should dictate the hire, so they are arguing against a straw man. As I said elsewhere, a good AD hires who he wants and makes the donors think it was their idea. The problem is hiring whoever you want and making the donors think you don't care what they think. I'm glad we agree that donors should not dictate who is hired as coach. It sure seems that a lot of people here are upset that a candidate pushed by one or possibly more donors was not selected even though there are issues with that candidate. I was not on the phone with Knowlton and major donors so I don't know what was discussed, but I do know that some donors are less reasonable/more entitled/harder to manage than others. I also know that I'd be terrible at handling such individuals.

gocal80, you did a nice job succinctly summarizing why the odds of cal basketball becoming a nationally ranked program again with mcdonalds all americans & a sold out haas during the cal's monster era are kinda low (but not impossible for mark madsen)

u & knowlton gotta lotta similar views, maybe u 2 could grab coffee or something & talk about them outta control entitled donors that wanna impose their will when in reality the hiring and management of the cal revenue sports should be left to the professionals in the cal athletic department

You sure like to make assumptions about what is going on behind the scenes. I'd never bet against Mark Madsen's chances for building a successful program here out of the ashes left by Fox. Listen to the interview with Madsen posted by Sluggo in another thread.

This is going to be far too simplified, but what donors wanted was EITHER 1. A candidate they knew they could get behind (and I don't believe that was only JP for most; ) OR 2. A decision process they could get behind. The process clearly didn't matter if it spit out a candidate they felt was a known quantity, but it did matter if it didn't. Many feel they got neither. Nor were given at least a "this is what we are thinking and this is why" call. They were given a "this is what we've done and you are still giving all that money you promised even though I did nothing you asked, right? What do you mean no?" call.

And I would lay-off the stating as fact that Pasternack has all these flaws. (Just as I cautioned the opposite before). The AD knows that is who a significant segment of donors wanted so predictably for Cal they are slamming him behind the scenes. I would remind you that when some questioned why we didn't hire Gates instead of Jones, rumors came out that he wasn't just a poor interview but absolutely unprofessional and horrible. It is apparently the only interview before or since that he didn't knock out of the park.

It is what Cal does.

aziz is truly an impact post player with +1 athleticism & potential nba upside

bandaogo scored 14 points on an efficient 5-9 field goals (love the alley oop lobs over the top), got a fluid free throw shooting stroke 3-4 free throws, knocked down a manute bol 3 pointer from the 7th green at shadow creek, absolutely dominated the glass with 16 rebounds & perhaps most important committed only 1 turnover

defensively he alters shots in the paint but needs to work hard in a s&c program to get his body right for the next level...his listed height of 7' appears to be legit but does not look like he's currently carrying the listed 230 lbs...with more muscle aziz will float less on the perimeter offensively & impose his will more around the bucket and defensively not lose position in the paint against heftier post players

yeah make no mistake about it aziz bandaogo is truly unforgettable, #55 gonna ride with me boss

shocky: splatter charts are used in the nba by scouts and player development coaches to determine where shots are missed, are they left or right which is a huge red flag or are they missed long or short?

joel (deep in thought): last season most of my misses were usually short

shocky: right and that's because your shots had too low of a flat trajectory because of the chicken wing stroke and also because you weren't driving with your legs fluidly thru the stroke...dude, your good to go now, can't wait to see you ball out this season

coastie, joel wuz last season's only +1 athlete (which allows him to create separation which is a major nba evaluation metric) on the roster, he can speed by defenders in a blink of an eye & 100% agreed with better coaching (there's still room for improvement with his shooting mechanics & also dribbling with eyes/vision upwards) his best basketball is still in from of him

will be interesting to see how this plays out, what level of interest from other schools & whether or not they are willing to turn the keys over in running the 1 will be key factors in whatever happens next

but gotta luv coach masden's approach of being transparently honest with players, kinda reminds me of monty's tuff luv...sat in the seat 2 feet behind mike at the thunderdome when the bears lost to the gauchos back in the day, montgomery pulled jabari out of the game with 5 minutes to go & tole a crying bird (who put a towel over his head) in a low voice that until jabari learned how to play fundamentally sound defense, he could not take a chance playing his mcdonalds all american in tight games

The big question may be, are the donors gonna continue to sit out, or are they going to rally around this chance to get us back on track.

Yeah, so he wasn't their first or second pick, but hopefully his success won't be JKs success, let it be the M2's success, the player's success, Cal's success, and let the donors help make that happen.

this past basketball season on the journey to florida for the preseason tournament, the men's team took a prop plane which had to refuel which resulted in a 11 hour trip to the sunshine state, guys were 100% exhausted, the cost of this mismanaged transportation wuz $40,000

"jenny" & cal's compliance department (i have requested a conference call with them during the next 2 weeks) have convinced the dumb azz athletic director that due to their title ix misinterpretation that the department must spend an equal amount on women's basketball, no other school in the nation shares this view...so charmin (the worst current pac 12 women's basketball coach, will likely lose every pac 12 game next season) took a jet recruiting trip back east (which has resulted in zero results/prospects) that cost $40,000

u would have to be dumb as **** to donate to the athletic department these days, any dollars should be routed directly to the football & basketball nil funds

aziz bondaogo & trey woodbury aren't coming to berkeley without nil dollars & with the knowlton misrepresentation of nil dollars to mark madsen there is chaos within the athletic department (as usual)

See, that last part about rallying as many donors and alums as possible is what did not happen. What competent AD doesn't do that if he knows that very large donations are riding on his ability to manage those relationships even while he is choosing a different candidate than they wanted? This isn't about whether in the end Madsen is a good choice to coach Cal. It's about the inept running of a multi-million dollar business dependent on donors to survive.

fardaws aimaq is a very good college basketball player, aziz bandaogo is an elite program changing +1 athletic talent that will require major nil dollars

there is zero chance that michigan's hunter dickinson is gonna end up in berkeley

fardaws aimaq is a very good college basketball player, aziz bandaogo is an elite program changing +1 athletic talent that will require major nil dollars

there is zero chance that michigan's hunter dickinson is gonna end up in berkeley

Bandaogo reminded me of Mouhamed Gueye (whom I love), especially when he hit the three. How would you compare the two?

funny u see that comparison too drizzly, when i heard that during masden's interview that he hoped to bring bandaogo, i sent an email to hoop dreams giving him the recruiting scoop & tole him that he reminded me in so many ways of mohamed gueye

aziz's ability to rebound with 10+ rebounds per game & defend the paint with +1 athleticism is unreal

but this not gonna happen without an attractive nil dollar deal

dickinson will have nil offers from well funded multi million dollars nil programs like duke & notre dame that will potentially be south of $1,000,000...cal''s nil goal is targeting $1,500,000 total & has not raised that level of funding yet

the con artist (and mike montomgery) did not consider donor participating in nil funding & its impact upon transfer portal recruiting, joe pasternack had the funding in place

rooting for mark to move the program but there's a better chance of jaylen brown regaining eligiiblity than hunter dickinson signing with cal

We should sell clothing for the NIL stuff. I saw Dickinson while at UMich was selling "Big Dickinson Energy" clothing. We could do that here and get to a mill or 2
