Yes will be moving on, strictly due to reduced playing time. Joel absolutely sees a huge morale change with the players staying and the workouts have been a marked improvement in his words. The assistants are allowed to be directly involved (under Fox - he literally lead most every drill and the assistants would rarely break in/correct/lead a drill etc. Had the new staff been here earlier, Joel would have stayed. With the new staff likely having 4 combo guards, the outcome would be 10 minutes/game+- and Joel wants to go where its a competitive team and He can get 25+ minutes/game. Iona, Buffalo, Toledo at this point, programs that He is most interested in (knows either key staff member/coach or players there). Joel also likes the strength and conditioning program much better than the previous training regimen. Said drills/fitness direction much better suited to actual game play. Since its his last season, and PT is key, its the reason for Him moving on - otherwise He would be staying as He does believe the future will be very good under the new staff. Personally JB is a special person and gave his all to the program - wish him the absolute best in developing his game to allow him success in playing professionally, be it overseas or wherever.
4thGen - what/how has been Knowlton's reaction to this and so many other responses from players leaving the program. Is he showing any clue at all, that there are good ways to run a program and bad? Or is his head still in the sand?

Sorry for such a smart ass leading question, but I am still more angry with him than Fox or anyone else at Cal these days. I'm so afraid, he's going to screw it all up if he's not gone in short order.

JK reaction is that the stubbornness of Fox was in large part the key factor to the downward spiral. Refusal to change his staff, extreme reluctance to reach out to donor's for needed financial support - be it charter flights, NIL foundation monies, help with funding for practice facility to the larger deep pocketed alums. What was missed and key was the lack of sincere connection with the players. Players got worn down, and training efforts declined, messages from Fox and the assistants were gradually tuned out. Conditioning lessened and injuries took a huge toll. And clearly the recruiting was awful. Horrible roster construction with limited guard and combo guard players - which severly limited the style of play possible. Just in the short time that the new staff has taken over, a noticeable energy level and improved drills that directly relate to on court/game play improvement, is being shown. JB said morale has dramatically improved and the players love the technical teaching they are being given (much better than before) and they also are embracing the competition in the on court drill/play, that is being emphasized. Coach Madsen is bringing about tremendous positive change. With more NIL support - the program as a legit chance to win 18+ games His first season.

4th gen's insightful response makes u kinda wonder why if knowlton truly knew/wuz aware of all of these negative factors then why did he unilaterally extend fox's contract another season for a total cost of $3,100,000+?

100% agreed that the 2023 roster construction is on a significant upward trajectory

a major priority of the basketball roster reconstruction is 6'7" 210 lbs sharpshooting texas tech (coached by matt scherbenske) transfer nightmare guard /wing mismatch jaylon tyson from plano who started his college career at texas

last season for the red raiders tyson averaged 10.7% ppg including a lethal 40.2% on 3 pointers along with an aggressive 6.1 rpg & a felony looting quick hands 1.4 spg

jaylon is the missing piece of the puzzle, he is the deadly perimeter threat that is lacking on the current roster (hopefully jalen celestine is 100% healthy & rodney brown will develop into that role too) but does he wanna commit to coach mad dog this weekend or take a chance with his future (like he did in austin) & risk sitting on the bench in kansas with a pot of nil dollars that will be gone sooner than later?...with 3 years of eligibility does he wanna earn a kinda worthless truck stop degree in lawrence or a degree from the #1 ranked public university in the world?...does tyson wanna be the man in berkeley?

yeah nobody ever confused lawrence with the year round cali weather in the wonderfully diverse san francisco bay area which is a fun cosmopolitan international city that draws people from around the globe

With Knowlton parroting the COVID and injury excuses, "we knew it would be a lengthy rebuild" and sticking with Mark Fox "is doing it the right way"?

And when some of us would go on this board over the last four years and say, this is the way Mark Fox is, he is an authoritarian, he is chasing away the players we have, and his bad recruiting has nothing to do with his staff, and everything to do with his personality, coaching style and his reputation, WE would be attacked for "maligning a good man" while he was beating down the players, driving our program into the ground heading toward record breaking levels of losses, making excuses and throwing players under the bus and taking $millions of our dollars in the process.

If 4th Gen's comments are valid, and I have no reason to doubt them, Fox was just plain refusing to do parts of his job. You can't order a person to be warm and fuzzy if they're not, but you can order them to meet with alumni and solicit donations. In fact, Knowlton could have set an objective for Fox to bring in enough donations to support charter flights. I think when Fox realized what a lightweight Knowlton was, he played him like a piano.

the winning lottery ticket

a cal degree is like a winning lottery ticket, it will open an unlimited number of doors in the future in your quest to achieve your dreams & goals in life...today's fiercely competitive global marketplace favors those that are well educated from elite institutions like cal, stanford & the ivy leagues, that's just the way it is...if you go to an academically mediocre truck stop school & get injured you are ******, that's why you got to be mentally limitless

but you gotta have academic ambition to graduate from berkeley, are you willing to do the work?

yeah, ambition is priceless, it's something in your veins

james arthur knowlton hired east coast based college sports associates who then charged the cal athletic department a couple of hundred thousand dollars for a week or two of making phone calls to find an old white unemployed authoritarian that had zero interest in recruiting or building a fan base

did the con artist learn anything from that 100% failed process as evaluated by literally every possible metric???

nope, the con artist hired college sports associates again during the recent search, cannot make this **** up...why would any college hire a search firm that specializes in outplacement for unemployed retreads when you got bears like j kidd, sean marks, mike montgomery & shareef abdur rahim willing to give you free advice?

the reality is that the con artist is not a financial steward of ur money, he burns thru money like it's nothing after all it's not his ******* money

the nba & college games are becoming increasingly positionless, this means that the most valuable players that get paid the most are often combo players, this is particularly evident by guards that can play both the 1 & 2 in helping their teams win games

https://instagr.am/p/CmSW-weJhoH
watch the explosive scoring highlights for jalen cone in the above highlights, he can score at all 3 levels which resulted in 45 points this particular game...when doing the hang with my golf buddy mr silverleaf sun angel on the floor in tempe last november watching the lumberjacks, cone was clearly the most dynamic player on the floor but not a natural distributor/facilitator but more like a 2 trapped in the body of a 1...jalen will need to prove to nba scouts that he can make his teammates better kinda like j kidd back in the day, he will be the most exciting (his vertical jump is ******* unreal) cal basketball player in haas during the last 6 years...bet

https://instagr.am/p/CpO2hSkr973
coach cal recruited devin askew to kentucky out of high school as an elite 2, last season he unselfishly played outta position at the 1 never looking quite comfortable in that role...devin gotta 100% recover from the hernia injury incurred last season under the former head coach's dangerously unsafe s&c program...askew gotta very high upside that he's not put together yet & he will be a key player in the transformation of the cal basketball program to potentially one of the greatest turnarounds in college basketball history next season...plus he got good hair

along with jaylon tyson (and his curvy brunette yoga female gf brenley who will always be welcomed in berkeley), point guard trey woodbury (still awaiting word from the ncca on his 6th year of eligibility) is an absolutely physical hard nosed winner in every sense of the word...woodbury makes the extra pass & sets up his teammates for success, his game reminds me of j kidd...if trey decides to join his former coach in berkeley, the las vegas native gotta show nba scouts he can also slide to the 2, last season he knocked down a lethal almost 40% (actually 39.6%) 3 pointers so playing on the perimeter should be a position of strength

so coach madsen gotta ask his cal's monster class to be unselfish, there' s only 1 basketball...all 3 of these potential california golden bears teammates can run the point & also dominate as scoring guards if they put the team's goals 1st...mental flexibility & showing a combo skillset is gonna be the key to winning games & increasing one's player evaluation stock by the closely monitoring scouts from the national basketball association

back in the magical days of cal's monster class with partner hoop dreams, taylor's dad (white shirt/blue cap in foto above) went to 150+ games in a row quite often with his daughter who is now pursuing her dreams living/working in soho in new york city

baldy wuz pissed, so when play resumes right in front of me he calls jordan mathews for a bogus phantom offensive call, j mat can't believe it but the monster knows he might've just cost his bears a victory

If this decision by Tyson is an NIL decision (as it likely is) then he likely ends up at Kansas. They will pay. They have a long history of paying for players. They could end up on probation as finally after years of investigation the NCAA is close to punishing Kansas.

The big difference now is that Kansas can make these payments via NIL and will be fine.
