East Germany was way ahead of its time in terms of pushing the genetic and hormonal enveloppe in its women's teams, for one...

Australia overperforms like crazy, given their population.

Heavy emphasis on swimming in the Olympics, the aussies have always been good at it being a warm weather coastal population. Ironically they completely missed out on the 2 rugby medals this time.

One contributing factor is that Germany's large immigrant population is mostly from Turkey and west Asia, whereas in France, the UK and Netherlands the immigrants are mostly from Africa, and they tend to gravitate towards and excel in sports a lot more. For instance, the Black population in France is nearly 10x larger than in Germany.

It's also true that there has been less of a government interest and support for Olympic sports in Germany, vs for instance in the UK where their government sees sports as having an important cultural and political function (panem et circenses).

Although Germany has a large population, those demographic numbers tend to skew older, and success at the olympics requires a large population of 15 to 35 year olds (or there abouts).

Relative to other European countries like Holland, which has had more gold medals and has less than one quarter the population of Germany, the German population pyramid isn't that different.

I've watched 14 Summer Olympics going back to 1968.
I simply can't recall a more captivating, riveting, and breathtaking Closing Ceremony!
