French pop, like French cinema, used to be very big up to the 70s or 80s, with a pretty wide international reach. It's been in relative decline since, but then again so is popular culture in the West (compare Hollywood's recent output to that from the mid to late 20th century..)

Air was featured in the closing ceremony, they are most excellent and very French in style and inspiration.

There is still some quality in French pop today but the international reach is fairly limited. Here's a sample of recent stuff I have enjoyed:

The Basque in SW France and north Spain were one of the earliest and original settler nation in western Europe, along with the Etruscans in northern Italy, they were there before the Indo-European Celts and Franks migrated from the steppes of Asia, so they don't exactly qualify as immigrants in France...
