Elon and DOGE cracked the matrix this weekend. They discovered and are in the process of closing USAID. People are still trying to figure out what the implications of all this are. USAID isn't an aid organization despite its name. It's a central hub to finance all kinds of foreign and domestic illegal activity paid for by taxpayers.

Democrats have been relatively quiet the first two weeks of the Trump admin outside of some comments over Trump's appointees. But apparently, they are now making some collective noise over USAID.

Democratic politicians are out of touch. Their constituents are silently outraged over USAID as well.

If you're going to shut down USAID and disable government supplied equipment, the responsible thing to do would be to give the employees a week to arrange transportation back to the US then disable their equipment. You have to use your government laptop or phone to arrange travel through the government travel office. Without being able to do that, you're stranded. I imagine they will have to pay for travel themselves and maybe get reimbursed at the whim of Trump and Musk.

I'll let ya'll in on a little secret since I don't visit OT that often.
USAID funds several foreign programs that do a lot of good.
One such program through champ is local and founded and run by a pair of Cal alums.
They demine former war zones so that locals can grow food and kids can play without getting an arm or a leg blown off by an unexploded bouncing Betty.
As of last count there are 10 million unexploded land mines worldwide in former war zones.
They cost 10 bucks to put in but 10,000 per to locate and remove.
No kid deserves that and this was one of the many programs USAID Champ funded.
Go f yourselves celebrating this you orange cult members.
Every one of you leaves a digital footprint behind with all the drivel you spread. And orange cult leaders aren't forever…
Remember that.

Sorry, but Elon Musk has discovered that actually the whole thing is just a CIA front and therefore that is the truth now.

It costs $10,000 to locate and remove one mine?!? That mine is typically located in countries where the average annual income is less than that! How gullible does one have to be to buy this kind of story??

The irony here is that covert arms like USAID have been used to destabilize countries and provoke a lot of these dirty wars in the first place, propping up some of the ****tiest regimes in the last several decades.

USAID is just being rolled up into the State Department inline with the reforms at the other intelligence agencies. It's role as a CIA support hand won't change. Trump is just making sure that it does what it is told to do.

USAID agencies and NGOs were trojan horses of sort, not openly connected to the State Dept or intel agencies, paying off local journalists and activists. It would be harder for these elements to conduct their business without that cover.

So you got nothing, just an "everybody knows" claim.

I was using movielover's and 2034's use of new media for their beloved "citizen journalists" and right wing social media sources. Normally I would have just said right wing media bubble.

Even google can get you hundreds of references. There is a neat trick where you just restrict the date published on your searches.

You are both ignorant and lazy. Yes, USAID's links to the CIA have been well know and well published for decades.

I've been thinking over this whole USAID issue. Here's how I see it:

Musk, Trump, and their allies are basically using one argument to support their moves here: that USAID does bad things. That's pretty much it. So yeah, I'm sure you can point out times when USAID funding or programs were tied up in some bad s***. Helping the CIA overthrow a Latin American government or something. I'm skeptical of some of these claims, but I'll acknowledge that some of it probably happened.

The problem is that there also seems to be some good stuff that USAID does (curing diseases, feeding hungry children, etc.) and Musk/Trump have offered no accounting for how those things will continue or be improved. You can't shut down a whole department and not have people asking questions about the programs that are good! Especially when many of those initiatives were in fact passed into law by Congress and should not be thwarted by the President (absent a new vote in Congress). That is really the issue here, not whether or not USAID is a perfectly virtuous organization. That latter argument is a red herring and just an attempt to muddy the waters.

This also reminds me a lot of Trump and the Republican effort to "Repeal and replace Obamacare." For a while, all they had to do was talk about why Obamacare was bad, the inefficiencies in the system, how some individuals and small businesses saw their premiums rise, how the website didn't work, etc. Some truth to all of that! The problem is that when it came time to repeal there was no replacement on offer, so rather than fixing the problems with the system it was just going to be taking people's health coverage away. I see a lot of these Musk efforts crashing on those shores eventually. He has not articulated a constructive vision for how to rebuild at all. I hope to see something like that soon, but I am not holding my breath.
