He did avoid war with Iran and shelfed their nuclear program.

Obama engaged in proxy wars with Iran and slowed down their nuclear program with a deal that included sunset clauses that were going to phase out after 10-15 years (around 2025-2031).

Basically, drone and missile strikes against terrorist groups and kicked the nuclear can down the road.

I think there's a reason why this was about the best we could get with an Iran deal, and we see it now with what they're doing with the Strait of Hormuz. Iran can't actually beat the US in a straight-up war but they can make it all very costly and perhaps not worth the effort.

I'm not an expert in the area, but you're omitting the opposing facts.

The Times of Israel: "Most importantly, just a few days before Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ( JCPOA), a plan that was supposed to delay Iran's ability to make nuclear weapons, Netanyahu delivered a televised "Iran Lied" presentation. He disclosed that the Mossad had obtained access to a warehouse where Iran kept records which showed its past nuclear activity. The result was that The Mossad obtained 55,000 pages and 55,000 digital files describing Iran's nuclear activities and brought them back to Israel. Those documents showed conclusively that Iran had been lying when it had said that it had NOT been violating the restrictions on it imposed by the JCPOA. In his speech announcing that the United States was withdrawing from the JCPOA, Trump stated that the documents the Mossad uncovered proved "conclusively" that Iran had misrepresented that it was complying with the JCPOA."

"This assertion ignores multiple Iranian violations of the letter of the accord. It overlooks the lack of transparency in the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) reporting on Tehran's nuclear conduct. It sidesteps the agency's failure to receive access to military sites where nuclear weaponization activities may have occurred. And it contradicts the assessments of other Trump administration officials....

"That line encompasses multiple JCPOA provisions. Tehran has repeatedly exceeded the JCPOA's limits on advanced centrifuge research and development. It assembled more than a half dozen IR-8 rotor assemblies at the Kalaye Electric facility in north Tehran. It operated 13-15 IR-6 centrifuges in a single cascade. It has consistently exploited conditions governing the quality assurance of advanced centrifuge manufacturing to conduct mechanical testing of advanced centrifuges, an activity tightly controlled by the JCPOA.

"Iran twice exceeded the deal's 130-ton cap on its heavy water. But while the IAEA noted that Tehran shipped the excess material out of the country, the Joint Commission the body tasked with monitoring the JCPOA's implementation allowed the regime to retain ownership of the material on foreign soil, spurring Tehran to store it in Oman. Consequently, Iran still likely possesses heavy water in violation of the 130-ton limit.

"Tehran has continued efforts to acquire technology for the production and delivery of nuclear weapons. Last year, Tehran illicitly attempted to acquire carbon fiber, a key component of centrifuge production, though a supplier and its government denied the request. German intelligence has reported that Iran continued to pursue illicit procurement of missile technology."

Update on Iran's Compliance with the JCPOA Nuclear Limits-
By David Albright

September 21, 2017

"Iran has repeatedly tested the boundaries of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and in many cases crossed the line into a violation. Many of these violations and efforts to push the boundaries have not been reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its quarterly reports to member states, reflecting a failing on its part. But the information is not classified, and we have reported on these violations and controversies in previous reports."
